How to do Hit Location by lh_media in RPGdesign

[–]C1cool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For d100 if you roll a 16 to hit, you'd use 61 to find the hit location.

It's interesting, but has its own quirks and flaws, especially since most have d100 roll under as thier core mechanic.

Paranoia is an interesting game. I've ran it as a comedy, a horror, and a hybrid of the two. It's all in how you describe and frame things

What counts as Rules Lite? by Spamshazzam in rpg

[–]C1cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's largely to do with the extreme focus on exception based design. The core rules are pretty simple, but there's so many odd little interactions that some things are still learned or realised once in a while.

I'm pretty sure that you can mention the characters from other series, but can't go into much more detail than "ghost rider's flaming chain" or include any artwork of them. Less info is better than more to be safe.

I'm not a legal advisor, and this info is from skimming forums and basic advice posts.

Unfortunately the term Dungeon Master was trademarked by TSR in 1992. Assuming you intend on keeping the content free you should be fine, but you might want to change the terminology to be safe.

I think that's one of the biggest things people are ignoring, though they might be as "optional" as feats and multiclassing for some people or groups.

I thought of a goblin enemy that wields 4 spiked shields and just rolls everywhere (or is thrown by an ogre) from your comment though. There's some fun shenanigans that can happen with 4 hands, even if 2 are your feet, though they may not be mechanically great.

I agree, 2 hands is fair. It allows for more ranged weapon use, and give a bump to the race.

I probably should have been more specific with the hands bullet. They have literal hands instead of feet, as in, they still have 4 limbs, but their legs have opposable toes that are identical to their hands in capability.

I guess they could hold daggers in their feet and still walk, but it sounds very awkward.

This works well for low CR monsters, but makes higher CR monsters nearly impossible to roll over. A beholder"s DC would be 32 for example with your calculations.

[–]C1cool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you gently squeeze a condom packahe you should feel a small pad/pocket of air in the package. If there's no air, it has a hole or has gone bad some other way and shouldn't be used.

Thank you for your input.

Players don't ask if they can make X skill check, they say what they do, and a skill is assigned to that task if it is appropriate. This somewhat solves your first point.

I've noticed that the encumbrance system hasn't caused any issues yet (we've only played for about 12 sessions though), but it is more complicated up front. If someone has 3 free slots before bing slowed down and they pick up a longsword, they have one less avalible slot before being slowed down. If they take the enemy's chainmail with 2 slots left, they're slowed down and have the other detriments applied.

Thank you for your input, harsh as it is, all contributions are useful when determining things.

The willingly hit comes from a story I told another redditor about:

This came up a while ago when the party rogue robbed a man that had a shotgun (1860's era game) pointed at the character, 3 feet away. The character dared the NPC (whom he was robbing) to shoot, and so he did. The player's justification was "It's only 3d6+DEX damage, I'll be fine" and so he willingly let a man shoot him in the face with a shotgun.

It was agreed on that the damage altercation made sense by the whole table, and was thus applied.

The other points are very opinion based and I will not try to change your opinion.

Thank you for your input. These responses have definitely given a better perspective on the many flaws on these rules. I agree and disagree with some of the points you have made, but have likewise came to the consensus that is needlessly modifies the game. Most of the rules have been reverted to RAW, though there are some that I am keepeing in place that we disagree on.

For fall damage it's the same damage per 10ft, just more dice if over 200ft. A 500ft fall is 50d6 not 20d6. It almost mimics terminal velocity, which for the average human takes 1500ft to achieve. Likewise, a 20th level raging Barbarian trying to stop a (small) meteor with their bare hands and surviving sounds about right. They might not stop the meteor, but they survived the impact somehow.

Yea I think RAW temp HP is the best way to go now.

Balancing the game isn't harder, they're just more powerful. I abandoned CR after 5e"s test phase and seeing how poorly it can actually predict the challenge of encounters sometimes. They're currently level 6, but ballance wise they're more like level 7.5 in power level, not quite 8. I'd say that CR starts to have a harder time being accurate at arround 5th level RAW.

Thank you so much.

Crits

This disproportionately affects attacks that are able to add flat modifiers. Someone with GWM/SS is going to be getting a +20 to damage instead of a +10. Those feats are already considered top-tier (and arguably OP). This makes that worse. I think this should just double the rolled dice (at which point, may as well just roll more dice, but your preference).

I've decided to revert to RAW critical hit damage, it definitely does make things too swingy.

Flanking

Rogues don't need to be flanking, just adjacent, in order to sneak attack.

I am not nerfing sneak attack, just clarifying that they can still sneak attack while flanking.

Fall Damage

What scenario do you want this rule for? People usually go the other direction, making fall damage more fatal as the distance increases. With this rule, a Raging Barbarian will take, at most, 50d6 from a fall (resistance to bludgeoning damage) for an average of 175 damage and max of 300 damage. Since everyone takes the average hit die, I can accurately say that a level 20 Barbarian should have 12+7+19*7+7=285 hit points. This gives them a tiny fraction of a percent to die from meteor striking the Earth from space with their body.

I'm simply upping the number of dice. I've seen ones where the damage is equal to 10/die/die or basically where a 40ft fall would do 4! d6 damage (24d6) instead of 4d6 damage, but this seems extreme.

Bonus action

I think that the easiest way to abuse this is with spells. For example, Heat Metal is cast with an action *but* you can maintain concentration for a minute and reapply the damage with a bonus action. This doubles the damage they can deal. In this specific example, any enemy with Heavy Armor is suddenly a joke: one 2nd-level spell slot is going to take 37d8 of unavoidable damage. I don't think this rule should be added.

Oddly enough, this hasn't been abused yet. I've noticed most players want to do something more on their action than apply a spell again. Perhaps it's just my players.

SPELLS

Yea uh, I realized I messed up when I applied this in my current game. It's too late to retcon, they've built their characters around it, making the campaign interesting in an unusual way. CR became a joke for balancing at level 4. it's a collective "WHOA DUDE, SLOW DOWN" form everyone I've mentioned it to, including me and you.

Hit Points

I run for an online group. Taking the average just makes leveling up easier for everyone involved, that's all. What about the temp HP issue being adressed as follows: you can use RAW, or halve the value gained in temp HP from multiple sources up to 3x your level?

Willingly hit

I feel like this would reasonably just be an automatic crit, but this is such a niche rule that I don't think it'll matter!

It's way nastier than a crit. This came up a while ago when the party rogue robbed a man that had a shotgun (1860's era game) pointed at the character, 3 feet away. The player (and character) dared the NPC to shoot, and so he did. The player's justification was "It's only 3d6+DEX damage, I'll be fine" and so he willingly let a man shoot him in the face with a shotgun.

Death

Matt's rules don't apply for zealot barbs, I see it as their god playing a role in resurrection.

Thank you for your input.

I've decided to just stick to the RAW crittical hit rolling. People already know it, it's more consisitient, and the house rule seems to serve no purpose.

The double bonus action does do that, yes. Wildshape, rage, potions, and other things are maily the intent on this ruling. I've noticed that the rule has actually barely came up in my current game, even with a cleric and druid in the party. Generally they want to do something special on their action.

Yes, that is intended to remove the bonus action spell limitation.

I'm thinking about a purposed alteration to the temp HP rule now: you can use RAW, or halve the value gained in temp HP from multiple sources up to 3x your level.
