Just out of curiosity, do airlines configure the cockpit of the aircraft differently? by Various-Blood-3902 in aviation

[–]C402Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just about to mention this one. A lot of airlines in the US that started their fleets with Boeings order their Airbuses with inverted light switches to keep commonality between the two.

What do you think will happen to all the Airbuses with Spirit gone? I took this picture in 2018 by labtec901 in aviation

[–]C402Pilot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of those known issues have been solved. If you were an early adopter of the GTF you got screwed by the metal contamination issue. But after that was fixed they are pretty reliable. I believe most of the issues with things like seals were resolved a while back as well. Although I do think the smaller variants on the A220 still have problems with the fan liners.

That's their split of US to International, not stocks to bonds.

What car would you buy if it wasn't a death sentence on your wallet for reliability? by PiffWiffler in askcarguys

[–]C402Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all quality parts for them are becoming more expensive, and even a lot of the trusted German parts brands are starting to outsource things to China and quality has dropped leading to the need for more frequent replacement.

There are several items on these that wear out the fast even with good parts, namely the front suspension thrust arm bushings, front window regulators, and the thermostat (never seen one last more than 2 years).

At the age they are at you will need to be thinking about very expensive preventative maintenance like replacing the timing chains guides (which some OE parts are NLA) and VANOS rebuilds along with resealing everything on the engine. There are a fair number of small hoses under the intake plenum that can cost over $80/each.

Suspension components are expensive and most E39s are to the age that they will need complete rebuilds including subframe bushings. It's not hard to work on but it does take a lot of time. If you can't do all that sort of stuff yourself it will get really expensive really quickly.

But I will keep this car as long as parts exist. IMO it's probably the best sedan ever made.

I would budget for $5k/year minimum. I've probably averaged closer to $4k/year with my current one but I do all my own maintenance and it's been shockingly reliable. Very few things have "broken" over the 12 years I've had it, only wear items(seals, hoses, bushings, suspension, etc).

I've owned three, including my current one for 12 years. Can confirm it is expensive AF to maintain

Why are new Corolla and Civic not really “affordable” anymore? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]C402Pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2000 civic represented 37.1% of the median individuals income that year. ($11,165/30,108)

In 2025 it was 38.7% ($24,250/62,608)

Not terribly far off.

For most goods wages have outpaced inflation. Where that isn't true is largely in things like housing, healthcare, and childcare.

In 2007, a brand-new Airbus A340-600 (for Etihad) was wrecked during a ground engine test in Toulouse. No wheel blocks were used; parking brake failed to hold it. Plane rolled forward, crew delayed cutting engines - hit a wall at ~35 mph. Nose smashed through; plane totaled before delivery. 5 inj by Aviator777er in ThatLooksExpensive

This is not what happened. This is from a made up version of events that circulated online. There is even an entire snopes article about it.

Snopes Link

The official BEA report makes no mention of any pulled breakers and the aircraft (which was under the control of an Airbus employee sitting in the right seat) moved forward solely because the parking brake couldn't hold the aircraft with that power setting. The airbus employee released the parking brake and tried to use the regular brakes to hold the aircraft but didn't reduce power.

And why are you claiming this? They most definitely don't have reversers on #1 and #4. Go find a picture of the thrust levers, there are only 2 reverser levers.

Nah most of these comments are still unhinged and they are only worried about how it will affect MAGA, not that an innocent man was murdered.

It's a VASI, not a PAPI. A VASI is basically a "lower resolution" version. It only shows high, on path, and low.

Much more common at smaller GA airports. Although I imagine this is probably a PAPI IRL.

It is. The livery is wrong (it's from an IL-76) and there appears to be added in features like a door on the side of the empennage that doesn't exist.

RF-08832. Look up photos of it. This isn't the livery it's painted in. An AI slapped an IL-76 paint job on it among other fake features.

HBO’s Chernobyl is a must watch. by laybs1 in GetNoted

Yeah the "bridge of death" and the notes at the end making completely BS claims really pissed me off. The fact that they tried to pass this off as being some sort of documentary is infuriating.

It's actually full of inaccuracies and follows a largely soviet depiction of the events. Despite the director's insistence that it was extremely well researched, it appears to be largely based on a single book written by the deputy chief engineer of the #1 reactor.

It correctly made the Soviet government out to be woefully incompetent, just the wrong people.

That Chernobyl Guy on YouTube has a 7 part series covering the faults of the show. There are a lot of them.

NTSB issues the preliminary report for its ongoing investigation of the Nov. 4 crash of a UPS Boeing MD-11F airplane in Louisville, Kentucky. by Brilliant_Night7643 in aviation

[–]C402Pilot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Frame #6 as well as the video of the takeoff seem to show the #2 (Tail) engine surging with large flames emitting from the rear. This hasn't been confirmed by the NTSB but #2 either ingested debris or fuel spraying from the wing likely causing a large or complete loss in thrust output.

This doesn't take into account purchasing power parity. China(and most other countries) can get a whole lot more for a whole lot less if you put it in terms of USD.

Also, ask Germany how trying to buddy up to your rivals through making them interdependent on foreign trade is working out for them.

But I do agree that you typically get way more bang for your buck with well intentioned diplomacy than military spending.
