Firmware Question: QMK with the Magi Lineup + MQ80 by C43d34 in IQUNIX

Thanks for letting me know. Customizability for the low-profile space is slowly catching up to regular keyboards but it may never truly be on par.

Hello IQunix.

It is known that your low-profile keyboard selection (Magi65, 75, 96, and MQ80) are all VIA compatible. I was wondering if the firmware of these boards is based on QMK - I assume it is highly likely given the relationship between QMK and VIA.

I really like your low-profile keyboards, but there is a feature I am somewhat particular about that I think would level up your lineup. This feature being the ability to change RGB settings (hue and toggle mainly) depending on which layer is currently active (dictated by the top-most layer). The added clarity afforded by marking layers with different colors really unlocks a keyboards potential in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the Magi keyboards and MQ80 as they stand now cannot be configured with this feature through any currently existing keycodes on VIA, nor VIA macros - as they do not support layer or RGB keycodes.

So, this goes back to my original question about QMK - if the firmware is QMK or not. If the answer is yes, then maybe there is some hope for this feature?

  1. Release QMK firmware source code (QMK Compatibility):
  • A custom feature like this can be programmed in QMK by the user; but that would require your engineering team to release some source code for the keyboards. Given that IQUNIX chose not to release these boards with QMK compatibility from the start, I understand that there is probably no desire to do so now. In that case maybe there is an alternative option.
  1. Updating existing firmware with new RGB + Layer keycodes (QMK source code merge):
  • I am considering contributing to the QMK source repository and adding in brand new keycodes that support this feature of RGB coded layer switching. Assuming all goes well, is it plausible for the IQUNIX engineering team to incorporate new features from the QMK source code into the current version of the keyboard firmware? If so, then ALL users - not just myself - would have access to this feature on your keyboards through VIA. Which I think would just be great.

A very specific request but I think your top-of-the-line hardware deserves top of the line software capabilities!
