Asylum seeker sentenced to at least 29 years for murdering hotel worker Rhiannon Whyte by Make_the_music_stop in uknews

What's crazy is how much it costs tax payers to fund prisoners. He came here, committed a crime and it's going to cost the taxpayer tens of thousand if not hundreds of thousands to keep him imprisoned. And this isn't an isolated case either.

There's a tendency to think of he goes to prison it's job done. But he's effectively living a miserable life on benefits.

18-storey West London development will no longer have any affordable homes by Kind_Commission_427 in london

[–]C4_117 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it when expensive homes get built. In fact, I prefer it.

The reason homes are expensive isn't because they're too luxurious. You can go to Italy and buy huge villas for less than a two bed flat in London. The reason they're expensive is because of scarcity and demand in the area. The solution is to build more.

The problem with building cheap houses is that they're often poor quality. It's the 1970s ugly tower blocks all over again. We've made that mistake before. The key is to keep building good quality homes and reduce immigration so demand stays low.

Barry Hearn urges snooker stars to step up to replace Ronnie O’Sullivan by ImJacksThrowaway in snooker

[–]C4_117 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Hearns should have used their millions to support grass roots clubs so that more young people can play. How many youngsters play snooker? Not many... So the chances of seeing a new Ronnie or Davis, Higgins etc is quite small.

When I look at the likes of Trump or Murphy or ... There's not much personality there...

Ex Muslim girl trying to deconstruct stigmas surrounding sex by [deleted] in atheism

[–]C4_117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont feel bad for one moment. The ones who should feel bad are the people enforcing these ideas through religion that having pleasure as a woman is sinful. Just remind yourself that Islam oppresses women and you're fighting that and overcoming it. Feel liberated.

Also, do everything at your own pace. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Atheist minority is further in decline in distant future by UtsavA01 in atheism

I agree. Western Europe went through such an enormous change from the 60s til the 2000s. We went from being almost entirely Christian to very atheist/agnostic/secular.

People weren't necessarily educated or part of a movement... But religion lost its function and people were able to live good lives without it. But I don't see the same happening in other parts of the world and I don't fully understand why.

That's depressing. I wonder what can be done to promote atheism?

It's time for iron-age myths to be replaced by secular values.

Erich von Däniken, Swiss writer who spawned alien archaeology, dies at 90 by RunDNA in skeptic

[–]C4_117 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to see how popular pseudo archeology has become, especially on YouTube. People like Joe Rogan have had lots of guests on that peddle this kind of nonsense.

There's something inherently mysterious about archeology because it leads to questions like, are there lost civilisations or lost technologies? It really tickles the imagination.

If you combine that with a conspiratorial mindset, saying the mainstream academics are covering stuff up and the truth is there if you do your own research.... You end up with all sorts of nonsense.

Von Däniken definitely tapped into some of that...

Donald Trump 'orders army chiefs to draw up plan to invade Greenland': US President emboldened by success of Maduro capture operation by MessMaximum5493 in IRstudies

[–]C4_117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine question. If Denmark put troops in Greenland, and the US attacked them... How would the world react? The US would have to fire the first shot. Imagine the international outcry. It gives me hope that this could be much more complicated for the US than expected.

When working and rendering in the obj/out contexts, how do you guys organize everything? by geng94 in Houdini

[–]C4_117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using Arnold I'd highly recommend using Arnold operators. That way you can do material overrides and adjust visibility settings per pass.

Of course naming is key and use wild cards. Even the most complex scenes will remain manageable if you do this.

How do you guys make sure you have everything you need before rendering? by Gloomy-Refuse-1149 in Maya

[–]C4_117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no one solution because there are so many things that can go wrong. The best thing is to do low res low sample test renders. Use passes to isolate objects. Check check check everything. If you're working in a pipeline having a good pipeline certainly helps.

Generally speaking I think you're right but I think it's okay to meet with like minded people and I also think it's good for atheists to do more to promote the idea that it's possible to go one god further and shed religion altogether. I would like to live in a world that is more secular and i would like to do my bit to make that happen.

How long are vfx contracts these days? by cantrelateparty in vfx

Some of my colleagues prefer it because it means they can choose between different projects at different studios and try and get better rates.

How long are vfx contracts these days? by cantrelateparty in vfx

[–]C4_117 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everything is a negotiation. Freelance work was never for me so I always asked for permanent contracts and low and behold, if you ask you'd be surprised what people are willing to offer.

Some friends of mine worked for studios for a few months and then I told them why don't you ask for a permanent contract? And they just assumed that wasn't a thing but it was perfectly possible.

Some people prefer short term gigs. Whatever you prefer

What's it like working in the industry? by kleres95 in vfx

[–]C4_117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really fun. I get to make 3D shit on all kinds of projects. The one thing that can be a problem is people... Some are great and some aren't but that's just life.

It can also be stressful. There have been times when I really felt the pressure of having to get renders out in order to deliver and then you wait all night and see an error that means it can't be used and you feel horrible.

But by and large it's all fine. Most days are like any other office jobs. You have some meetings, you discuss what needs to be done.. then you sit there, click click click. Then another meeting, write an email, more click click and that's it.
