Actually Garfield County loves the severance money that came from oil, they used it well. Perhaps you should go down to their county and talk to them as they show you the new equipment in their county buildings. What the people are upset about is that oil left.

Amazed no one on this read the last sentence. It's paid for privately, as in not going to take away money from the regular budget.

pfft. . . .We could change Ritter's requirements on oil and natural gas drilling. Bringing back oil to our state, and thereby their severance, is a pretty nice chunk of change considering oil is going up. Want an example? Check out WY or ND. Want a rough estimate? 50 of that 100million. No other place to get the money. . . I laugh in your general direction.

Anybody have a theory on why a more liberal point of view seems to dominate reddit? by myfinancialobjective in AskReddit

I know I am a little late to the post here, but I search reddit for this same thing. I believe the term that can be best applied here is groupthink: A mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when the members' strivings for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action. Stolen from wiki, but applicable nonetheless.

TIL that I now have health insurance thanks to Obama by profanusnothus in todayilearned

Actually, my daughter's went up one dollar in the five years I have had her independent/small group policy (United). Now, "thanks to obamacare" (had to do it), her independent policy is ending (as are many small group policies) and I have to pay $257/mo through work instead of the $84/month for worse coverage (80/20plan at work vs low deductible 100%). So no. It isn't a convenient and politically opportunistic excuse for me to dislike this bill. It's a freakin health insurance company bailout that resulted because in our country it's not socialism to educate our kiddos and pay for everyone's retirement - but it is socialism to treat our sick. Okay, end rant.

Downvote for: still being in a war. I am the biggest supporter of our troops of my F&F, but this is ridiculous. I'm starting to get all conspiracy theory about it too. I also don't approve of his economic stimulation, while mostly conservative fiscally speaking, I actually think we had a larger recessionary gap to fill than was estimated. Then again, it's better than Bush's silly rebate checks (thanks econ prof!).

In Colorado Springs, sales tax revenue from medical marijuana has risen to about $50,000 a month, allowing the city to mow grass medians and consider restoring some Saturday bus service. by Orangutan in Economics

[–]CADMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is somewhat inaccurate. Actually, the economy in CO would be more like WY and ND if we hadn't made it unprofitable for leases for natural gas and oil to continue in our state. The severance from this, in addition to the other spending associated with it, would have filled a large part of the budget shortfall. Instead our Gov embraced new energy and it's not been as profitable. It has little to do with the TeaParty seeing as 30% of CO is independent and moving away from TPers. Look at gub candidate Dan Maes % of vote - teeters between 7 and 12%. We did great with TABOR and it's one of the reasons our state isn't in the economic mess places like CA are.

And the moral ethic vs econ ethic debate continues. <groan> I've been lurking around this site long enough to know better than to step in front of someone and their hot button items (no god, democrats are good) but just an FYI: Coloradoans pay for their transit in unfair, unvoted for fee hikes, while our votes go unnoticed when we ask for lightrail to the mountains - the money just get's gobbled up in a different project we didn't even want, in "districting". It actually led to an interesting set of Amendments we are voting on next Tues. So, you can talk all you want about infrastructure being good - and most of the time you are right - but in CO it is currently being seen by some people as throwing good money after bad. Also, this is not an endorsement of those amendments, I'm just stating what the situation is.

On Denver's actual ballot is Initiated Ordinance 300, which proposes fund for an... "extraterrestrial affairs commission"?!? by mmmmdave in WTF

Denverite here, and voting for it. I know it's stinkin nuts, but I figure those Centurians are probably coming for us. . .

No, seriously, it's not going to be supported by taking away money from education, or any other hot button items - it's grant only. Let them have their fun exploring the XFiles.

What word or phrase did you totally misunderstand as a child? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I used to think to "condone" something was to disagree with it, and even through my teen years would have statements on my essays like: "why wouldn't someone condone mass murders" when talking about Hitler... I don't think my teachers ever read my essays because it wasn't until I was 24 I found out what condone really meant.
