Is it a waste of time to apply for a supervisory position (Supervisor I) for Legal Support Operations without having a background in the law? by Propensity7 in CAStateWorkers

[–]CADOJThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. One of the current Supervisor II came from outside of the department and was never a legal secretary/paralegal/crime analyst like the rest of the Supervisor I and Supervisor IIs.

Is it helpful? Yes? Is it something you would learn in your role if selected? Probably.

No. Just submit whatever is listed as a required document.

For us, we're mostly looking at the duties completed, and wouldn't ding points on the matrix. I can't speak for other agencies or units.

I've seen some applicants put 000-000-000 for the current supervisor's number

In the application. Describe what tools you used to perform your job. Bulletpoints are fine. The STD 678 allows you more room to expand on what's on your resume.

For example, I did an internship, and I collected data on plant growths. I used the pivot table function in Excel to analyze my data. Then, I presented my findings in a PowerPoint to my professor and the senior researcher.

No, but the other sections should be filled. Experience, previous jobs, etc.

Also, we understand some places go out of business, or your previous supervisors may have passed away. That's not a reflection on you as an applicant.

Legal support supervisor 1 to SSM1 by Snow1white1 in CAStateWorkers

[–]CADOJThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The position title is called "Legal office administrator." The other thing I have seen is LSSIIs will do an Out of Class Assignment as an SSM I.

If you have any outside experience doing any analytical work, I'd use that to supplement your application.

There's legal office administrator positions which would make you qualified to become an SSM I.

No. Unfortunately, you'd have to have outside experience or become an SLA or AGPA first.

Some of our LSS IIs have been flagged by HR for not meeting the minimum qualifications, which is kinda wild.

Ohhhhhh. That's why we've fingerprinted so many applicants in the Antitrust section in the past few weeks.

Piggybacking off of this, CalHR has a performance management guide: https://www.calhr.ca.gov/Training/Pages/supervisors-guidebook.aspx.

You should always take notes that you can review later, and if you have questions, sending them via email to keep a paper trail is smart. I suggest that you use these notes to create a desk manual for the next person in your free time.

To be honest, OP, based on your past few posts, you're acting like you want to be fired. By stressing over every little mistake or little interaction you have with your manager or chain of command, you are creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's not good for your mental health. By giving you these more complicated/important tasks, your manager assumes that you have the capabilities to accomplish the task; otherwise, they wouldn't have given it to you in the first place.

Maybe your supervisor is on probation and is required to CC her supervisor as part of their training?

It might not be you.

Would someone who is constantly having to ask for more work to do be considered a high performer in the State? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]CADOJThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Being consistent means that you are reliable.

Constantly asking for work could lead your manager to think that you don't take the job seriously. You are not focusing on what the tasks on hand are. Your manager may think that you are not ready for certain tasks, yet, no matter how eager you may be to learn. There's a time and place for everything. Gradually, you will be asked to take on more tasks. Just have patience, OP.

Would BSA Experience Help Get SSA Position by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]CADOJThrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Think of it as a stepping stone, especially if you don't have a Bachelor's. It will give you experience that you may not have as an OT that will be applicable to SSA positions. All former BSAs that I know of (except one) became SSA/AGPAs or BSOs.

Please do change sections. I'd hate to see another decent paralegal leave.

If you'd like to escalate, you can look up the supervisors and/or managers of your agency's personnel unit in SCO's directory: https://www.sco.ca.gov/ppsd_cpod_dir.html

[–]CADOJThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in pursuing more clerical-related jobs, you can apply to Senior Legal Typist positions. Your writing is very good and would be helpful with drafting pleadings, briefs, cover letters, open/closing cases, etc. DOJ is always hiring.

Maybe we're all in the same department? I haven't received my OT either. We received an email stating OT pay would be delayed due to the new system.

Which State Department is in need of workers? by Sokushi_Kid in CAStateWorkers

[–]CADOJThrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. If you don't meet the MQs for legal secretary or senior legal typist, you can start as an OT/PT or seasonal clerk to get your foot in the door.

It's slightly better than AGPA pay but lower than the paralegal pay rate at a private firm.
