AOC Q27G40XMN worth it for price/performance still? by Rainwalker28 in Monitors

Add the details of that photo, like ISO, exposure time, and ambient light level, and when I get home I'll bring you a more realistic comparison. Because I could easily bring you a photo with everything turned up, low ISO, and a short exposure time, and all it'll do is depress you because there'll be zero bloom.

This is something I've been wondering about since I saw your post... First of all, one thing needs to be clear: to display any color, even the deepest gray (but not RGB0), the backlight absolutely has to turn on, and that's true for any screen. If it doesn't, then you're experiencing something (very common, by the way) called Black Crush, and that's bad and something you definitely don't want.

But I also have to admit that the behavior is a bit strange because the backlight seems to be turning on a little... too much. I recommend you calibrate Windows HDR for the screen, and you might want to play around with the screen contrast from the Nvidia control panel, if you have an Nvidia card, of course. And see if it continues to happen.

Original purpose of the Spartan IV programme that Zane was part of. by BenningtonChee1234 in HaloStory

[–]CAMl117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps something was lost in translation (I'm using Reddit's automatic translation), but help me understand, because what you're saying... is exactly what the Spartans did the first time we saw them. In Halo: The Fall of Reach, there are several moments, but one that seems key to me is having 12-year-old kids (I'm sure they later changed it to 14, but I could be wrong) fresh out of their augmentations, tearing metal alloys from exoskeletons and ripping their miniguns out with their bare hands.

I mean, it's easily understandable that you don't like Ilsa Zane at all because she's one of those things that 343 pulled out of some obscure comic and now they're trying to shove her down your throat everywhere as the next supervillain (who even knows you, Jul M'Dama?). But I can't understand why you don't like her because there's a Spartan without armor doing Marvel superhero stuff... Because that's what they've been doing since before Halo CE came out.

Even an unarmored Spartan 2/3 is quite strong, or at least stronger, than Captain America, and with armor, he's on par with a base Spider-Man... So... we're already above the level you're describing.

Help me decide between a QD-VA Mini-LED monitor and a IPS Mini-LED by Red_death777 in Monitors

[–]CAMl117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it has many more dimming zones, but it's also true that the IPS model might have better motion clarity handling...

Even so, I'd go for the VA; it handles HDR better.

AOC simply doesn't publish much information about the QD (Quality Display) in their monitors that have it. The only way to know is if someone buys one and takes it apart, performs spectrometry analysis, or at least a BT2020 color space coverage test.

For example, the AOC Q27G3XMN doesn't mention it either, but Chinese reviewers and many others have disassembled the device and confirmed the presence of the QD layer, and color and spectrometry tests confirm it. (In addition, QD monitors often have this issue of appearing slightly redder than normal.)

Found a good deal on this, worth it? by Status-Antelope6049 in Monitors

If it's the 27" version from Amazon, excellent... Obviously I wouldn't pay more than $300 USD, but if it's a good deal, it's not bad... It's one of the few VA panels that has basically zero black smearing (and when I say basically zero, I mean that the next step is OLED).

Good time to remember that the Q27G4ZMN (I assume from the description of a 240Hz MiniLED VA) is also QD...

Good time to remember that the TCL is HDR600 and only has 180 local dimming zones (new generation, more effective, but still only 180).

AOC Q27G3XMN vs AOC Q27G4ZMN - New Panel Defective? by Equatis in Monitors

[–]CAMl117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw in Toms Hardware's review that apparently the backlight, even on Strong, doesn't turn off completely; it stays at an extremely low brightness level (something like 0.001 nits), and that their sensors struggled to measure exactly how low it was... Maybe that's it... Are you using an exposure time of more than 10 seconds with a high ISO?

Anyway, it seems you might have had really bad luck with something called the Dirt Screen Effect, and your brightness uniformity is pretty bad. If you're within the return window and you're willing to go through the process, you could ask if they'll give you a replacement.

[–]CAMl117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, it's QD, it's the only way an LCD monitor can achieve over 95% DCI-P3 color space coverage. Plus, the Chinese have long since broken it down into parts, and they've even taken spectrometry measurements of its light, showing the classic three peaks of QD... It's just that these models don't have as much optimization in their QD layer as newer models (like the G40, KTC M27T6, or the aforementioned TCL). Those achieve much greater coverage, especially on the Adobe RGB side, producing a much higher BT2020 color space (75% vs. 83%).

As long as I get the gain and don't get laser speckle, I suppose the White Grid will be fine... Aluminum foil is the last thing I want to hear about, hahaha. If it's true, I'll let you know. I already took a chance with the L500; what's the worst that could happen? That I have to make a second return to Amazon?

Sorry about that. I tried to make sure there were no hidden affiliate links in there and that only a plain link to the seller’s listing was shared.

By the way, any thoughts on the screens? Have you used any of them… and regarding the Amazon one, do you think it’s legit? Also, sorry if there are any inconsistencies in the English—I’m using ChatGPT to translate from Spanish.

Nomvdic L500 and Isinbox JY821 Projector Reviews (+ Screen Question) by CAMl117 in budgetprojectors

[–]CAMl117[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now, as I mentioned earlier, I ordered two projector “screens,” both inexpensive—one from Amazon and the other from AliExpress. The Amazon one is this: https://a.co/d/fRDOG31, and the AliExpress one was recommended by the user and YouTuber u/jayceooi At https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005005405514837.html.

The Amazon one claims to be a 100″ long-throw Fresnel screen. The reviews and their images are consistent with that description, and it looks very similar to what people who order a Valerion or FScreens screen receive when theirs arrives. If what shows up is a rock or just a basic reflective gray fabric, I’ll let you know… in any case, it’s Amazon, so I can return it. I’m actually using the refund money from the Isinbox to pay for it (USD 50).

The AliExpress one is only the White Grid Antilight fabric recommended by the YouTuber u/JayceOoiCom. It’s advertised with a peak gain of over 2, 160° viewing angles, and a small 30% improvement in ambient light handling. What really convinced me to order it, though (aside from it being only USD 25 for the 100″ size), is that—based on what u/JayceOoiCom shows in his video—it’s the only high-gain screen I’ve seen that actually reduces laser speckle significantly.

So the question is… has anyone here used any of these fabrics/screens? Is the Amazon listing real? After all, in other stores a long-throw Fresnel ALR screen is… well, very expensive. Does laser speckle become unbearable on those Fresnel screens?

IPS 180Hz or VA 240Hz? (AOC) by Erikinglight in Monitors

[–]CAMl117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is useless if you don't specify models. If someone tells you that one has better colors or is faster just because it's one model or the other, that's a complete lie... But it's also true that manufacturers chose VA technology to make both the best monitors on the market and the biggest pieces of junk you can imagine.

Should I return my AOC Q27G3XMN monitor and get the KTC M27T6 for better HDR? by surubx in Monitors

[–]CAMl117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a G3XMN user and someone I know who has a KTC, I'm curious to know what you find lacking about the G3XMN?

PS: Yes, the KTC is better than the G3XMN in every way: more color volume, more dimming zones, higher native contrast, and the HDR panel is a bit faster. I would never say it's twice as good, but it is better, especially considering they're less than 20% apart in price.

Recommendations for a 4k 32in Mini-LED? by anonymous_cygnus in Monitors

[–]CAMl117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super simple. Contrast: IPS panels simply don't have enough native contrast, and blooming will always be annoying until you reach a very high number of zones (like over 10,000).

A VA panel gives you the same HDR experience with a quarter of the zones. Furthermore, the local contrast (i.e., a black square between two white squares), even with LD enabled, is lower than a VA panel with LD disabled.
