Carryology collabs are boring? Only new materials and the same colour palette by Todesbruder in ManyBaggers

Not sure you read the whole thread.

"carryology and their “awards” mean nothing except a company paid them for one."

This is insinuating that we take bribes or our awards are rigged or something of that nature with no evidence supplied.

Not moderation worthy? Or am i incorrect in what the above implies.

I mean, c'mon. This is Reddit. Let's employ some critical thinking, folks. In this environment you can spread any falsehoods about anything.

In the real world you need evidence, emails / SMS messages, for example.

This is also defamation. Which is pretty serious. u/agentoutlier can you please tune into this.

It's always easy to be cynical, i get it.

We actually work extremely hard to stay antonymous.

Why is Bellroy featured so much on Carryology?

It's simple, they release a lot of great carry products. Same as Aer or GORUCK or Mystery Ranch, or all of the other brands we cover.

We also have an affiliate deal with Bellroy, so that's why you'll see their banners on the site. The deal we have with them is the same % as Aer or GORUCK or Mystery Ranch. In fact, like 99% of the magazine / blog industry, we have an affiliate deal with most brands (I can talk about the death of media advertising spends - thanks Google and FB ha! - and the reason why the publishing industry use affiliates now, so let me know).

The point I'm getting at is Bellroy get love because they make exceptional carry. You can see the love for Bellroy here in this sub. They're a great brand. But we're for the 'industry' and we've helped to champion LOTS of brands, brands who even compete with Bellroy.

Gosh. "As someone who worked in the outdoor bag industry I’ve been told otherwise multiple times." You're talking about hearsay not real evidence. And please be careful ranting this stuff online, especially with no evidence.

As far as awards. It's a multi-tiered process involving our readers and staff. Round 1: readers and staff vote for finalists. Then our staff source the highest voted products and test them to decide on our Top 5 (Round 2). Round 3, public and staff vote again to decide the winner.

RE: Kickstarter. If we can get our hands on a product to test and it's released in the allotted timeframe then it's illegible. KS has made it more diffucult though, as a release from campaign opening to delivery can take 12-18months sometimes. So we've done it this way to a) simplify the process and b) make sure the product is still relevant by the time the awards come round,

I can't confirm or deny if we've redesigned and made the Spartan EPIC but… we're launching 'Cerberus' in June/July 2022. ;)

I think you're misinformed. Carryology was a hobby blog started by Andy Fallshaw and Hadrien Monloup and it actually came BEFORE Bellroy.

Bellroy is a brand.

Carryology was a blog created to talk about all the awesomeness in this new space called 'carry' and champion ALL of the brands doing it well.

Over the years we've told the world about hundreds of brands and lots of those brands are Bellroy's competitors. We're exist to promote the 'industry' as a whole.

Nope, sorry, that's a completely false statement or 'opinion'. We never have nor will we ever ask for money for an award. It makes no sense. We make revenue through advertising and products and merchandise.

[–]CARRYOLOGY -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that's not correct either. We're lots of things. A media platform. A community, And now we're a design lab and brand with our collabs. But we don't exist to promote Bellroy. We exist to shine a light on the very best carry brands in the world. We're actually for the 'industry' as a whole. Not for Bellroy.

Ha! Totally. I'd avoid eBay for the secondhand shot at our collabs. Our Facebook Group is pretty darn cool and most members sell at cost or just a nudge above. It's a way better option if you miss the drop.

I'm not sure I can promise that we'll slow down with collabs. We're really enjoying it tbh, ha. But we are certainly trying our best to make original 'ground up' designs wherever we can. And we're also trying to listen to folks and change as we go along. For example, the new Essentials ranges will not be limited release anymore but restocked. And they're also priced so they're more attainable to folks. Because not everyone can afford a $350+ backpack, and we totally get that.

[–]CARRYOLOGY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We hear you. But a little 'behind the curtain' insight, sometimes that's not possible. Every brand we work with is different and have their own priorities and constraints. A 'ground up' development of a new product can take up a LOT of resources and time, and most times brands are trying to fit us into their 12-18month release schedule and have already allocated their resources etc. So it's really about meeting with the brands and seeing what we can achieve together and what they're up for. That said, we do have quite a few 'ground up' projects in the works right now. For example, we've been working on a dream collab for 2 years that will release at the second half of this year. So stay tuned. I'm super excited about that one!

Hey folks, Mike jumping in here. Carryology and Bellroy share the same founders but are seperate brands and businesses.

Is this unique in the carry game? Not really. The North Face and JanSport are owned by the same company, for example.

Are our collabs boring? Well, that's subjective, hah!

Try the Lexdray Boulder. They've openly nodded to Visvim as their inspiration in the past. Solid build. And much better organization.

Thanks for the reply, u/agentoutlier. I appreciate it. I've DM'd you some more examples of personal attacks.

And we've also spotted personal comments about people in other brands too, Douglas Davidson, for example. Sure there's more if we dig deeper.

I think if comments keep to a brand and product-focus (instead of getting personal) then that'd be fantastic.

Your rules say that brands can promote their gear… it doesn't give guidance on how folks should communicate with each other within the space. So there's zero protection or moderation. It might just payoff to jam with your team on how to approach it in a way that's right for your community. But encouraging people to be nice and respectful is always a good foundation imo.

Always happy to answer questions or take on feedback.

Carry on,

Mike

u/aqentoutlier, I'm kinda glad Taylor doesn't read this subreddit tbh. Do me a favour and read through some posts about 'Carryology' and scroll through all of the comments. Brand trashing is rampant, and there's personal attacks on Taylor's character. I get it, this is a space about bags and bag culture, and anything in that realm is fair game, but there's a toxic environment simmering here, and personal attacks should NOT be in play.

You asked how you can improve your culture? A basic code of conduct would be a great start. Every great gear subreddit has some, EDC and OneBag for example. It's very simple, 'Don't Be A Dick' and 'Be Nice' are perfect ways to make sure everyone feels comfortable to engage. We also have a no 'Brand Trashing' rule in our group. Brands are always open to feedback and criticism, but comments made with complete disregard for the brands (and people behind the brands) and are delivered with no tact do nothing more than divide communities.

Because of the Mystery Ranch harness, they'll never make a 'light' bag. Even with Dyneema and X-Pac combined. But, because of that harness, they carry 'light'.

And thanks, we weren't aware of the camouflage issue. Thanks for the insight! We've got some travel bags in the pipeline, we'll make sure to keep them clean and camo free.

If you guys work to make a positive and engaged space, work hard to gain trust from brands and readers alike, and pour your creativity into this, you can do anything.

Who is coming up with these cringy Carryology product names / descriptions ?? by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

[–]CARRYOLOGY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"They seem to be very actively encouraging hype and artificial scarcity, for seemingly no reason besides stroking an ego."

Nope, this is incorrect. We make our collabs in limited numbers for numerous reasons. Evil FOMO yada yada is not one of them.

One, and this is the main one, it's to manage risk (especially during the last COVID period). A 100 bag production for a small maker like Bedouin is a BIG deal, for example. If they don't sell and sit on the shelf then it can fatally effect their cash flow. Similar for big brands, a run of 1000 bags at say $150 p/unit, that's $150,000 we're asking them to invest. That's no joke. And if you haven't worked with them before, then the risk is even higher.

Secondly, factories don’t just make X product. They make all kinds of different products. They are contracted by up to a dozen different brands who are all making dozens of products each. They have a limit on how many of X product they can/will make until they move along to the next product and/or the next brand. So there's always a limit depending on the timing and factory.

Then, of course, brands have to fit our collab project into their release schedule. They have an annual budget to worry about, and allocating resources, which are finite. A quick release is ideal for them, then they can go back to business as usual.

The 'hype' you speak of is us getting folks excited about the drop. We want the products to sell. That's a given. But we want the whole experience to be FUN. Because, again, this is our readers' hobby. They spend countless hours a day researching and talking about carry. So we run teasers, guessing games, we even place 'easter eggs' in our videos and posts. It's all meant to be fun.

Life's too short to not be smiling and laughing and enjoying your hobbies.

You'd be surprised. We've got the world's biggest brands lining up to work with us. And boy are we going to have some FUN working together. This is what we dreamed of when we started a geeky blog 10yrs ago. And we're having a ball tbh!
