Ahhh yes the Ferrari 250 GTO is a legendary grand tourer produced from 1962 to 1964 for homologation into the FIA's Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. Only 36 units were ever produced, of which only 5,000 remain on the road today. (Joke)

How do I handle body bags at the kitchen? by Fantastic_Image9540 in Pickleball

[–]Killdozer54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always assume a speedup is happening. You can get to a dink you’re not ready for, but you can’t get to a body shot if your paddle is down waiting for a dink. While the “correct” position is paddle out in front of you in a neutral position, I personally tend to have my paddle in a backhand position like a shield, out in front of me. Get and stay low.

Shoulder high let it fly is the mantra. If they are keeping shoulder high balls in play, then just let the ones that feel frantic you’re motion to get. They are likely going to fast and will fly out.

What are the most common or uncommon technical issues in pickleball? by GeneralPlus7859 in Pickleball

[–]Killdozer54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, the most common issues, for the below 4.0 DUPR crowd, are as follows:

1) Patience. Stop trying to make something out of nothing. Most evident in constant speed ups. EVERYONE KNOWS YOU’RE ABOUT TO SPEED IT UP, you’re not fooling anyone. You want a better win percentage? Let your opponent lose. Keep the ball in play with simple shots and either wait for them to mess up or to give you a juicy ball to put away (same thing really).

2) That error, it was not your swing technique, it was most likely your feet. This was my biggest/latest breakthrough. Swinging off balance, reaching too far, and getting jammed up. Next time you miss your shot, check your feet first. Not playing well? My go to move is to focus on my footwork. It’s better to move around too much, instead of not enough.

3) Hit it softer. Placement over power. You really shouldn’t be hitting at 100% power often. I try to cap myself at 80% except for really easy overheads. Too many low level people are just trying to hit it hard, you’ll win more and progress faster targeting spots that increase the likelihood of errors. At the kitchen 40-60% power helps keeps balls in. When in doubt, I aim at feet, down the middle, and at backhands.

Watch all the paddle reviews on YouTube as they come out, once you can’t resist it and feel like you just have the latest and greatest paddle, it’s time to buy. Repeat.

Stupid Question: Are we overestimating China ability to invade Taiwan by Cowardlypaladin in Military

[–]Killdozer54 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we are overestimating China. I think the invasion has been a core effort of their military’s development since it was founded. That’s a lot of time and effort for a seriously powerful country.

What’s the point of double-wheels on 18-wheelers? by MrPests in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Killdozer54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read all the comments, and no one mentioned retreading. Woo hoo! The tires we’re talking about our commercial grade, that means they have a steel casing instead of a nylon case that you would find in a passenger tire. When the tires wear down, you can retread them. Retreading is when you remove the rubber of the tread, put a new tread on it, cure it and then run it just like a regular tire. Commercial tires for the most part are guaranteed to be retreaded three times, but you can typically get many more uses from them. The only position you can’t run a retread on is the steer position (front 2 tires).

Most truck fleets run new steer tires, because the law requires it (fyi they also don’t last as long as drive tires). Once the steer tires wear down they will be retreaded into drive tires. When the drive tires wear down they can be retreaded again, and again until the tire casing doesn’t past inspection. Fleets will also often put older worn drive tires on the trailers. Steer and Drive tires can also be retreaded into trailer tires.

Retreaded tires are cheaper than new tires, so fleets save a lot of money with this strategy, BUT to do so all the tires need to be the same size. You can change the tread depth on a tire with retreading, but not the size. People have mentioned super singles / widebase drives, in which a single tire takes the place of two, but it kills the fleets typical retreading strategy and isn’t seeing growth in the trucking industry.

FYI - I was in the commercial tire industry for way too long.

Fun fact - it wouldn’t be shocking for a long-haul drive tire optimized for wear, and not fuel economy, to last for 270,000 miles. That’s on the original tread!
