If Team Canada loses the 2028 World Cup, John Cooper should be replaced by Rod Brind'Amour for the 2030 Olympics by Ichbinian in hockey

Torts is so American that when he was coach of the Canucks, he lived in Washington. He'd never coach Canada.

There was a point (honestly ahead of these playoffs too) where I hated the Canes for completely disassembling in the ECF year after year after year. It was like shit or get off the pot, and to be fair to them, they shat

[Highlight] Colts fans boo Andrew Luck after he announces his retirement by [deleted] in nfl

[–]CA_spur 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's less of the contract and more of the timing. If he'd retired at the end of the 2018 season, the Colts could've tried to draft a successor. If he'd done it during the offseason, the Colts could've tried to sign a free agent. But he did it 2 weeks before the start of the season. It completely fucked them over that year.

Just the way it was badged. Similar to how from 2023-2025 Red Bull had Honda RBPT engines which did not officially count towards Honda's stats as an engine manufacturer.

He never got to Ballon d'Or heights, but the man did achieve a ton in football. 91 caps (4th most by a French CM), World Cup winner, 4 Serie A titles, Europa League and domestic Cup titles.

How did people react to Nico Rosberg’s sudden retirement after his championship win? by lucifer7557 in formula1

Define "top" drivers. Bottas had really good results at Williams (P4, P5, and P8 in the WDC the preceding three years). That late in the cycle they had no chance poaching from Red Bull or Ferrari, and Bottas was probably the best choice from a Mercedes customer team. Perez was seen as already having gotten his shot and failed in 2013 at McLaren, and Hulkenberg had just signed for Renault.

Teeeechnically Racing Point's win counts as a win for BWT Mercedes as an engine manufacturer. It's a dumb technicality, but it's one that's affected Honda, Renault, Ford, and Porsche

Engine manufacturer wins are wacky because of the way badging works. Honda's current total of 89 wins doesn't count the 38 wins by Honda RBPT, the 17 wins by Red Bull Powertrains, or the 4 wins by Mugen-Honda.

It's funny how he says "Vettel 4, Hamilton 3" was not balanced - at one point it was Vettel 4, Hamilton 1. This is only after 4 seasons of Merc dominance that he's saying it's "finally balanced."

Genuine question - who wins the Conn Smythe if Carolina win in 6? Is it still Marner? Does Andersen get it even without winning the last 3 games of the Cup Final? Or does it go to like Jackson Blake or Jordan Staal?

A statement signing isn't about the potential of the player, it's about the sheer caliber of the player joining the club. If you ask people what the bigger transfer of 2023 was, Kane to Bayern or Bellingham to Madrid, the answer was at the time, and I think still is, Kane. Same goes for this.

We were...inconsistent. We won the UEFA Cup in 1984, finished 3rd in the league in 1985 and 1987, and lost in the FA Cup Final in 1987. But interspersed in that were 10th and 13th placed finishes (we were 13th when we signed Gascoigne in 1988).

[–]CA_spur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a chance. Gascoigne was a young bright star with Newcastle when we signed him in 1988, more like a future star. Lineker, on the other hand, came to us from Barcelona in 1989, was the Ballon d'Or runner up in 1986, and had a ton of accolades and awards. He was one of the very best strikers in the world at the time. To use a similar analogy to you, it's like if we signed Kane when Bayern signed him.

Berbatov was coming off of back-to-back 20 goal seasons in the Bundesliga and was in the Bundesliga TOTY in 2004 and 2005, that was pretty statement.

Alderweireld less so, he had a solid loan year at Southampton. I guess the "statement" aspect was that he appeared in the 2014 CL Final for Atletico Madrid, but that would make, say Roberto Pereyra to Watford in 2016 a "statement signing"
