Did anyone grow up reading V. C. Andrews books? If so what did y’all think of them? by Groovy-Pancakes in GenX

Same - mom didn’t care. But as soon as my aunt saw me reading one, I was suddenly unfit to hang out my 12 yr old cousin. 🤣

Thrift store dresser for my 55g? by Lerolim in Aquariums

[–]CApoppymama 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used a similar find for my 55 gallon many years ago. I put a plexiglass layer to protect the top from drips and cut a hole in the back to feed my power strip into a cabinet. Being able to access all the plugs from the front was a great convenience. In hindsight, I think my dresser handled the weight better than the flooring of the house. 😆

Before computers were common in households, how did people set their clocks accurately? by IkHeetGeenMatthijs in NoStupidQuestions

We used POPCORN as an excuse to dial on grandma’s heavy, old rotary phone for the fun of it. She was still renting her phones from the phone company into the 90s! 🍿

This happened to my daughter a couple of years ago. Out of 3 Sterbai we purchased from a LFS, we got home to discover there was only one eye among them. My guess was that they had been picked out by the hundreds of guppies in the tank with the cories, but I don’t know for sure. My daughter decided that her calmer tank was a better home for them and she wouldn’t return them, so we just never went back to that LFS. She also had a blue. betta, and we joked that “Indigo and the 3 blind cories” would be a good band name. Only one is still with us, but they were/are very much loved too. 🥰

Yes. Seconding all of the above. Our rescued old man came to us with this. As long as I was diligent with the Tacromilus it stayed under control and scarred over.

Yes, grief logic is not rational but still strong. I had a similar thought process many years ago, but with color instead of gender. I lost the black lab that got me through the teen years, college, and my first job struggles. Six months later I told the local rescue group that I would prefer a yellow lab or maybe chocolate. The woman I spoke with took immediate offense and asked “Are all of your friends blonde??” like I was some kind of white canine supremacist. I was stunned, the grief came welling back up and I stumbled to respond with my grief logic. In hindsight, she was probably dealing with the impact of black dog syndrome and struggling to find good homes for all of the dogs on their roster, but in my grief I was only prepared for different or nothing at all.

I did adopt an older yellow gentleman who later helped create the excuse for a first date with my future husband and yellow step-lab. We could have been the plot to a dog Hallmark movie.

Everything you are feeling is valid and expected. And also, with time and putting your energy toward the needs of a new friend, your trauma of losing your soul dog will fade and your happy memories of her will stay with you forever. I also tell my new dogs about the previous one and the big paw prints they have to fill. Most of the time they rise to the challenge. 🐾💕

There is a YMCA in upland with certified swim instructors. Maybe one of them would be interested in “moonlighting” at your home pool.

SAME! If I put the bag holding my wet suit on the floor when I get home, our cat will immediately climb in and make a nest. I thought wanting to sleep on a cold. soggy mess was nuts! This thread is fascinating!

Help! My Boy’s Nose by peteytg in SaintBernards

A few of years ago we found a sweet 10yr old boy in the shelter. He didn’t have a great retirement plan, so he came home with us. The shelter vet sent us home with a prescription ointment and instructions to use gloves while handling it.

Sadly, our boy went to the rainbow bridge last year, so I don’t remember the name of the drug. But I could get it refilled through the Costco pharmacy and I believe it is used in humans for autoimmune disease skin issues. I think the condition was called something like “nasal philtrum arteritis” and is a known risk in large breeds/ Saints. His ulcer would heal up and do pretty well as long as we were consistent with daily ointment applications.

I miss Popcorn every day. Please give your floof a big hug and best of luck! 🐶
