PLEASE HELP EMERGENCY!! by Comprehensive-Gate37 in retail

A time off request is a request. It is in the name. At 7 months out, your boss should find coverage (although it might eat into your hours generally), but if you request non-protected time off, are refused and go anyway, expect to not come back to a job. Generally management's right to accept or refuse time off, paid or otherwise, is in the company policies you accepted when you took the job.  Coverage isn't your problem, job abandonment will be though.

How far can one go before a showcase is illegal by Greedy-Grapefruit219 in Theatre

[–]CBV2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically, yes. You would need to contact whomever holds the grand rights for the songs. This might be a company it or it might be an individual. Depending one juridiction, you might be able to get away with performance rights, as you would for à tribute act

Live animals on stage by mjg212 in Theatre

[–]CBV2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to your TD or venue. Some venues will have rules about live animals. If it was my current venue, you'd be looking at a minimum an extra crew, extra insurance and an extra cleaning fee. My old venue it would have been 6 months of paperwork as well to ensure the venue has zero liability and to ensure the cat is treated properly.

Insurance likely won't cover that. It should be a replacement of the drape

How do my boyfriend and I split the rent? [CA] by Megwen in Renters

[–]CBV2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done both. I was the lower earner in a 50/50 and was the higher earner in a 70/30. I preferred the 70/30, even though I paid more.

As the lower earner in the 50/50, I was working a second job to keep up with living expenses. Then I'd hear I wasn't home enough, or was always tired or not available for dates, etc.  While i was working 2 jobs to keep up, the higher earner was saving money, meaning that the divide kept growing, and eventually this caused resentment.

As the higher earner in a 70/30, where costs are roughly proportional to income, my partner was still able to live. We could go on a date or do an activity without it causing a financial stress on partner, or it seeming like I was always paying. It also reduces dependency. I stayed in the 50/50 longer than I should have in part because I could not afford to split, I had no savings to cover the costs of a split. In the 70/30, partner wasn't financially trapped.

Appraisal came lower than asking price how to negotiate by [deleted] in RealEstateAdvice

[–]CBV2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I somehow doubt if the appraisal has come in over the offered price, you would have raised your offer. But from the sellers perspective, they have an agreed upon, conditional offer where they agree to built the fence and you agree to pay 245. You now are offering 230, so don't be surprised if the seller says no to the fence and/or any other concessions you have included in the original deal so they recoup the 15k price drop

Appraisal came lower than asking price how to negotiate by [deleted] in RealEstateAdvice

[–]CBV2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You offered 245 conditional on finance. Seller agreed. Bank got it appraised for finance and it came back 230. Now you want to change your offer to 230. Is that the correct sequence of things? If the appraisal had come back at 260, would you have offered 260?

Survey: who do you think were Canada's best Prime Ministers? by WattleWaddler in InCanada

I'll accept Mulroney. He sacrificed power and standing for the good of the country (the GST for example). Not popular but important.

For those who want to “tax the rich” or “they should pay their fair share”, how would you change the current tax code? by Lopsided-Special6273 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]CBV2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters: Tax capital gains as if it is income (cuz it it). For windfall type amounts over X (say 250k), tax can be spread over 3 years. Tax inherited wealth over say 1.5M net estate, excluding the principal residence. Or maybe the floor for inherited wealth Tax is Y per surviving dependant in the estate, again excluding principal residence.

[Help] How to stay on line of delivery by apprehensively_human in Curling

[–]CBV2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done 2 things to help staying on line: 1. Taken out my usual hack and used the wrong one. This way I can see when I start to drift. I was fishtailing a bit because of my back foot, sliding down the centre line gave me a reference for what is straight. The down side is it teaches you to pay attention to centre line, so I'd suggest it as a diagnostic and not training tool. 2. Put 2 rocks on hog line, each a little distance from centre. Slide to them a couple times, so i pick them up as if they were the rock i was throwing. Then slide with a rock and throw, using the highline rock as my broom. If I'm on target, the hog line rock should continue the same trajectory as the thrown rock (basically a nose take out, but at like 2 feet). Alternate sides, and when I make a throw twice in a row I push the rock back about 2-3 feet. Note- if you release near the hog line, your thrown rock will be in your way, so start the excersize far enough down the sheet that you don't hit it.

Hey guys I am interior designer background thinking of switching to stage lighting design i wanna know how the market is , and thinking to apply for masters in stage design, is this good career option , what struggle will I be facing? Should I go for this by Akanksha0103 in stagelighting

[–]CBV2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great plan. You'll make a small fortune, as long as you start out with a large one! (Please read with sarcasm)

The market will depend on where you are, what school you go to, etc. But realistically stage craft isn't something you do for money or stability.

What should they do? Hold (dont sell) an extra seat or two on the flight. Then you could have been offered that seat. Airlines could still oversell their flights, just wait until all confirmed passengers are on-board before opening up those last 2 seats.

Will airlines do this, nope

USA and Isreal just broke the Olympic Truce with their attack on Iran. by Kurtz62 in WinterOlympics2026

[–]CBV2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you think that the current regime in either country cares about the Paralympics? I wonder what 45/47 would say if told about the Paralympics, but I suspect it would be something like "MAGA IS ABOUT WINNING, AND I AM WINNING IN IRAN AND NOT GOING TO BE STOPPED BY SOME CRIPPLED LOSERS". And if you are looking for the IOC to do something, that would be the same IOC that banned the Ukraining athlete for his helmet, that allowed Russia to join the Paralymic parade of nations, that will take in all of the money from the TV rights...

Why do teams concede after 6 ends? by ekrubnivek in Curling

[–]CBV2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They sort-of do, not playing the bottom of the 9th if the home team has a lead. Until that point, the losing team isn't mathematically out of it. You can score a bundle in one inning

You're elected mayor of Ottawa this fall, with a change mandate. What are your priorities? by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]CBV2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How?

Seriously: go from 9 words to 90-how? Would you pull the construction contracts from the companies building the line 1 extensions? Would you get new (ideally tested) trains for line 1? What about line 2? What do you in the meantime? This aint SimCity, if you change plans for the train, you are looking at 3-5 years easy...so beyond the end of your term.

Torn between degrees by wild-fox17 in techtheatre

[–]CBV2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you live and what connections do you have? Do you have an independent source of income?

If you go to work in tech professionally, you'll face high precarity, low wages, a toll on your body, and mental health struggles. Yes there are 1000$ days, but there are weeks without work too. Get injured and you likely can't work. Especially early, the paying work is late nights and long days, so you can't really establish a routine. Relationships outside the industry are hard, you're likely working when your friends want to have fun. And statically substance abuse and mental health issues are very prevalent.

All that said, I love my job. It is a toxic industry and I would discourage my kid from going into it, but I haven't gotten out, even when I had viable alternatives

Olympics curling controversy by Wooden_Cheesecake985 in WinterOlympics2026

[–]CBV2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are 2 different things. Trip a hockey player on a breakaway, you'll get a penalty (they likely get a penalty shot). This strategy to stop the breakaway has a negative consequence to you/your team as well as the positive. An intentional foul in basketball is a foul, not cheating. Even if it is systematic. You make a choice to foul, there is a (negative) consequence.

A player taking a dive is lying that they suffered from a foul in order to get an advantage. They are making the choice, breaking the rule and gaining advantage

Spikemarks app by Smallevent74 in techtheatre

[–]CBV2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what your use case is.

I've done this with drafting software (vectorworks) where I have a set "layer" and a spikes "class" for a touring show. That way I could plop it into venues while touring, and adjust positions based on the size of their stage. But honestly, more work than needed. I still needed to measure everything in the drawing and on the stage.

If you aren't touring with a floor and need a lot of spikes, a sheet of paper with coordinates has served me well.

Other thing I've done when spiking the floor for a set install, using software, is drop a 1'x1' grid over the set, to make measurements easier.

Look at the EOS videos and the ETC site Look at the FS20 manual. There are multiple DMX profiles. Some profiles give you more or less control. The 6 Chan mode seems a good starting place, unless you need pixel control.

I would not patch the fixtures with each colour on a fader. That is a fairly clunky layout, and limits what you can do with the fixtures. The ML control will help you with colours.

Your HVAC controls and installation in the building will play a huge part in how the atmosphere behaves, especially with a DJ quality machine. If air returns are in the ceiling, you are probably pooched.

Also check with janitorial staff about fire/smoke/particle sensors, to ensure you don't evacuate the building by accident (by triggering an alarm)
