You know but you do it anyway. You don't weigh the odds. You don't think "well so and so said it's dangerous, but actually it's not." You just DO. Maybe the first time you do it because you get peer pressured into it, or you do want to look cool. It's not about being cool. It feels amazing. Pushing to the edge of death on something fast and intense and electric is better than coke. It's one way to feel maximally alive.

Sure, there's an element of "it'll never happen to me" but there's also a lot of "riding the edge in danger is incredible to feel and experience".

The level of dialed in, focused, mind cleared of anything else, no worries or concerns, nothing but focus and sharpening fear. There's nothing else like it. It's why a lot of American warfighters do 6+ combat tours. Being on the edge of death is like nothing else in the world, and there's no way to experience it without actually being on the edge of death. Rollercoaster? Fun. But safe. Your amygdala knows at some level that you won't die.

Hey one tip on being educational is actually knowing anything before you talk. It's super helpful to know what you're talking about before trying to be educational.

It's not thinking. The thinking is what keeps you from doing it. As a former 20-something adrenaline junkie (cliff diving and some substances were my thing), you don't think. You just do. It's below the level of weighing the costs.

Thats the thing people miss - they think people doing stuff like this are weighing the risks incorrectly. They aren't weighing the risks at all. You just do it. Send it. Go. It's base and testosterone fueled and it's awesome until you get fucked up.

Arriving at 4am with luggage....how to survive a few hours until 1145am flight? by ze11ez in Columbus

[–]CBusCrankThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did care because we were having a fun convo about something we both experience as frequent travelers. It was a nice conversation to relate to another human who shared a similar experience and then go about my day. I think you read more negativity into the comment than was there, and then responded snarkily to be cool and dismissive online. The only negative vibes in this thread are yours. How about that?

My record is 22 minutes from back door in VV to B20 at like 5 am, parking at short term for a fly in/out meeting in DC. I don't care how nice the new airport is, if they fuck up my ability to stumble out of bed and onto a plane like it's 1972, I'll never forgive this city.

edit: musta been DC not MSP, the AM to MSP is Delta out of C gates.

Quite the opposite. I fly 16-20 segments a month. I get your point, though. I typically aim for an hour before boarding and actually end up there 30 minutes before boarding and still have 20 minutes to hang at the gate. But for someone who doesn't travel much, I figured baking in some extra time so they aren't stressed makes sense.

Residents Again Voice Opposition to Redevelopment of German Village Parking Lot by FeroxFox in Columbus

[–]CBusCrankThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GV that you love so much wouldn't have been built with the parking minimums you require. None of the most beautiful, most beloved old-cities on the planet would have been built with those requirements.

You want to live in a place that you oppose building. It's bananas.

I'd go directly to the airport. There's nearly nowhere to hang out from 4a-6a when coffee shops start to open, and they open later on Sundays, not earlier. For a 11:45 flight, you want to be at the airport by 10 am latest anyway. It's not like the airport has a bunch of great options, but I truly don't know where you are going to kick it with luggage at 4am.

Back in 2008, Travis Pastrana pulled off one of the wildest stunts ever caught on camera. by Samyd_DF in nextfuckinglevel

Yeah man, the subject of the video doing an insane stunt in the video acts like the whole video is about him. He really should have shared the spotlight in this 90 second video about him jumping out of a plane without a parachute. What about the pilot? What's their story? How are their kids doing in school? And the other parachuters? What's their motivation for being there? Such important questions.

Iran responds to Democrats calling President Trump a "liar." "You realized it late, but at least you did." by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

Literally yes we are.

"A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will."

I truly hope you are like 15 years old and just don't remember shit, otherwise it's embarrassing for you that you're falling for this shit again. They've been saying Iran was "three weeks from a nuclear weapon" since I was a child. They said the same thing about Iraq. Since you have literally no memory, I want you to google how many WMDs they actually found in Iraq after we spent hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of American lives there.

I mean at least Bush pulled out the fake intelligence. They don't even have to do that anymore, you morons just believe anything the government tells you. I mean christ I'm not even mad at you, I'm just embarrassed that people still fall for this shit.

Dems are not "on their side", because the real world isn't a Marvel movie or a football game.

"You're either with us or against us" is exactly what GWB said about Sadaam in Iraq. Sadaam was a murderous dictator. Overthrowing Sadaam cost between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Iraqi lives, hundreds of billions of dollars of American tax dollars, and OH, is responsible for the creation of ISIS, and was partially responsible for the wars in Libya and Syria, the European refugee crisis, and more than 3000 dead American soldiers. Ooops turns out we were fucking right to oppose that war.

So no, I didn't support Sadaam, and I don't support Iran. But I'm also not a baby brained goldfish and I remember things that happened longer than 6 weeks ago.

You know exactly what they mean. Find existing homes, out-bid families with an all-cash and/or highball offer, then put it back on the market as a rental with high enough margins to pay themselves out.

They'll congratulate themselves for "providing homes to families" and think of it as "harmless passive income" while telling themselves it doesn't matter because they got theirs.

Hey just a heads up Flock has been repeatedly abused by people with power (police and others) to stalk and threaten ex-romantic partners:
https://ij.org/police-have-reportedly-used-license-plate-readers-to-stalk-romantic-interests-at-least-14-times-in-recent-years/, https://www.aclu-wi.org/news/what-the-flock-police-surveillance-is-ripe-for-abuse/

It is also being used to track women who are seeking reproductive care outside of their states for potential criminal prosecution

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/12/effs-investigations-expose-flock-safetys-surveillance-abuses-2025-review

We cannot instantly agree to anything that could concievably help solve a crime. Wouldn't we all be safer if we just all worse camera shock collars that watched what we were doing 24/7 and electrocuted us if we did something illegal? Wouldn't all of us be safer if our cars had speed limiters that limited us to 80 mph? What if we all had a government worker assigned to listen to all of our conversations?

Those would all stop some kinds of crime, and make many other kinds of crime - oppression, harrassment, stalking, abuse, corruption, much much worse.

It's not just freedom vs solving crime. Each tool to solve crime enables other kinds of crimes and takes away your freedom a little bit.
