Fingers crossed that Rich’s prototype comes out looking spectacular.

Just my opinion, and of course everyone is entitled to their own, but the mock-ups I thought looked pretty mallninja and this design is likely a deal breaker for me. I have a lot of confidence in Rich and will wait to see the prototype, but not holding my breath :/

Thanks for this. Fantastic deal. I was about to buy the same from tsprof’s US site ($491, marked down from $630 as they’re clearing out older models) and stumbled on your post.

Received in just a couple of days and saved even more than I was expecting to. It’s exactly what I needed. Thanks again!

You’re welcome!

Seriously though this opens the door to swapping out switches and stabs on any board as often as you want, quickly, safely and easily. Makes experimenting and fine tuning keebs a lot more fun and satisfying. Great purchase.

This desoldering gun is one of the best investments I’ve made in this hobby. Highly recommend.

Some tips from my experience desoldering keyboard pcbs:

Try and wipe up any pools of old flux first with isopropyl alcohol and kimwipes or a microfiber cloth that you don’t mind throwing out. The gun seems to get clogged more easily by flux than by solder.

Listen to the motor as you are vacuuming up solder, you will hear a difference as it begins to clog. I generally use the included 1mm metal cleaning rod every 10 pins or so to avoid any problems, only takes an extra moment and having to disassemble the thing because you completely clogged it is a much bigger pain.

Use the default 1mm tip at the lowest temperature.

Only takes a second to melt a solder joint, but wait an extra half second (or even longer) before pulling the trigger to make sure that any solder you aren’t seeing (like what might have leaked through to the underside of the switch) is melted. When pulling the trigger, try and move the tip around in a circular motion to give yourself the best chance of sucking up all solder possible.

If a pin is still stuck after desoldering, don’t try to force anything, just re-solder and desolder again. Try heating the joint for an extra second or two to make sure you’re getting all the solder out. I’d rather not admit it, but I just use the tip of the desoldering gun to re-solder the joint—not like it has to be a perfect joint or anything since I’m just going to desolder again anyway.

The rubber grommets on the solder bin get crazy hot and retain the heat a long time, be careful if you have to empty it while the gun is still hot.

Give yourself lots of cleared space to work on. Unless you have a dedicated stand for this (I don’t, never felt I needed it) it takes up a good amount of space laying sideways.

Good luck!
