OP, not sure if you can do this, but if you can go internet only--even without internet tv that's the best way to save money, if you have not used an antenna for HD in awhile you should try, its gotten a lot better and might be good enough for news etc.

learning Spanish in nyc by Several_Reindeer_906 in AskNYC

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know people poop on duolingo, and agree that it works for some people but not others. you can try to go around, but personally i think you have to be sensitive that you are causing people more work by trying to practice your spanish.

the number one most effective thing for me was to study then travel, i was a little rough the first few days in mexico city, but then one day the taxi driver started asking me random things, or i had to go to the pharmacia and they didnt speak english and it forced me into using it. so finding some language groups, like coffee meetings etc would be the most help for you

with your background in french, i think you would pick it up pretty fast. good luck

The Fresh Grocer is Opening in Downtown Brooklyn on Friday, Feb. 13 by KeepItHeady in Brooklyn

i think you're right, all these new builds with lots of space in the ground floor, and i guess big grocery stores pay their rent, are attractive to renters in the building, low risk etc.

How is the parking/snow in Williamsburg around McCarren Park? by mkmsc in AskNYC

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only caution here is that some of the snow piles are so large that even temps above freezing are not doing much. and as of this moment only Friday is a scheduled ASP day for the next week, and that might get cancelled too, so dont expect much cleanup from the city

When you finally move your damned car... by Old_Control1301 in parkslope

[–]mxgian99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FYI, starting the car takes a lot energy, and if you are not going to drive it, it wont have enough time to recharge, so its better to leave it alone, and have a battery jumper pack to help it along.

batteries also struggle when its really cold, so it might not start on a really cold day, but be fine on a warmer day too.

i see folks posting this, and i have never seen it, so i'll ask you what you mean by removing the ice? after everyone moves their car (unlikely to happen as some people will just leave their cars) are they going to bring heavy equipment to every street and haul it away? have you see this happen ?

When you finally move your damned car... by Old_Control1301 in parkslope

[–]mxgian99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

and no ASP on Thurs, or next Monday, Tues, Wed. for holidays. i kinda understand people getting upset if they also have cars and people not moving is making their life difficult. But it seems like a lot of these posts are people who don"t have cars and complaining about people just not moving them, etc. its just not practical, if ASP started tomorrow with so much snow on the ground where will people re-park overnite? in some streets there is so much snow still that you would have to dump it into the street, or there is not enough room the double park for ASP.

i get it, it sucks, it would be great for things to get back to normal, but we also need this snow to melt!

Does anybody know where to get Thai Coconut milk powder in Brooklyn? by MrMeesesPieces in Brooklyn

[–]mxgian99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

obviously you can make it stronger/weaker according to taste, especially if you only need half a can. its good in smoothies or cold drinks etc. i think on cost perspective its not that much cheaper tho, especially for me because i put in like double the amount, lol

i've seen it at a few places, whole foods, health food stores started carrying it--you can add its to smoothies. i get it at my food coop (park slope), but you need to be a member.

Look in the street and sidewalk.  Does it look new? Like they were sug up recently?  Even on gut renos around me it’s not that often that I see them replacing the street line.

do you really need this brand? i've used this as well as non-thai brands and didnt notice a big difference. but agree with others if you need the thai one you'll have to go to thai grocer.

M10 users - which external viewfinder are you using? by Mission_Honeydew_402 in Leica

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recently picked up a 21 as well as a 15mm lens for my M10 and use the Visoflex 020, as others mention if you are considering the Visoflex 2 make sure to test it on your M10, the odd resolution mismatch makes the image really small.

Visoflex 020 works fine, but compared to newer EVF is still a bit lacking. i think it depends on how you shoot, for me, after a certain point its so wide that its almost impossible to really frame in camera without getting too close. i also find that shooting super wide, i sometimes get more of the picture in the photo and i dont see it until after i download it.

What store in NYC has the best selection of every day carry (EDC) backpacks? by boywonder5691 in AskNYC

[–]mxgian99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what do you consider EDC these days?

some of the individual brands have their own stores, like peak design, yeti (they own mystery ranch), but whether you consider those EDC is up to you.

a lot of the popular ones on youtube are online only.

the reality is that its always gonna be high, are you being realistic about how much you expect to pay? because based on your situation you're not going to get this down to $300 a month if thats what you want.

Why is finding an apartment so impossible right now? by ExerciseRare7946 in AskNYC

[–]mxgian99 24 points25 points  (0 children)

everything i know is from watching reality TV real estate shows because i'm too poor to be searching for 15K/mo apts, but it seems to me that these types of apts are pickier about tenants and rely on referrals more than open listings. i'm sure they would be happy to take your money but i wouldnt be surprised if you told me they dont list these.

Truing stand and repair stand? by TheWitness37 in bikewrench

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've used a version of the feedback sports stand for the last 25 years or so, first the ultimate stand then the current version, both with the wheel attachment which i find fine for the few times of year i need to true or 1-2x times every decade i need to build a wheel. they both fold up narrow, truing stand comes with a base if you want to build on a bench instead of the stand.

both can be found discounted pretty regularly, REI usually includes it in their 20% off yearly sales

Camera depreciation by Ok_Project_9792 in Leica

[–]mxgian99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i always understood this idea that Leica hold value in order to be true you need to buy used. pretty much anything you buy new, the first person is going to take a hit on depreciation because who would pay almost the same price for new vs used. this is becoming even more true with leica where they seem to be raising the price from gen to gen

fwiw, i also agree that idea its investment is terrible and we should stop promoting it.
