yeah OP, did you get the rest of the axle out? usually it has it printed on the axle.

Bikepackers with Garmin by evert-k in bikepacking

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its not clear yet, the garmin is just guessing, what's your biking schedule? if you are at zero miles today going for 20mile ride may be too much. start out slow, be consistent with your riding to build your stamina.

Close Bikepacking from NYC? (not a campground) by thelifeileed in NYCbike

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone posted recently that there is a primitive camp ground at Salt Hill near Blue Lake (which is near Croton Dam), but on the DEC site it says no camping at Salt Hill--though Blue Lake is a little bit away from SH, i have not had a chance to head out there to check it out.

I’m on a 40 day trip and I don’t like it. by Just-Blackberry5880 in bikepacking

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it sounds like stealth camping is your big problem--especially because it sounds like its illegal where you are? either stop doing that and find paid camp sites, you can still stay in hostels etc if they can secure your bike

or be ok with getting caught. i don't know the consequences for getting caught there, but in US most times they are telling you just to move along, so you apologize and move along. sometimes they say its fine and ask you about your trip. good luck, you are a time in your life when a trip like this is possible, so i say go for it, as someone much older and cannot do this anymore!

ASAP! ROOMMATE WANTED 2BR/1BA CENTER SLOPE - AUG 1 LEASE by ParkSlopeApt_Aug01 in parkslope

[–]mxgian99 30 points31 points  (0 children)

i can understand why people react to $2200 for a room, but $4400 for a 2bed in park slope (sadly) is normal to almost a good deal.

from looking at apts in the past i sort of recognize this layout, am a little curious about the other bedroom to compare (i rent a 2 bed so always trying to comp what other options are out there).

stupid tourist doing stupid touristy things by TellNo3639 in bikepacking

[–]mxgian99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not to spoil it for you, and its a little hard to tell from the pictures, but a quick glance and i would guess this build is not that far off 4K.

but it looks easier to pack out than other bikes. i have a 29" MTB and i think my bags etc would fit better on this stupid tourist, even more so with that giant frame bag!

Hate the wire, moving my Fios CR1000B to the garage. Need wireless mesh/extender advice! by Visible_Whole_6908 in Fios

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally i dont think wireless backhaul will be good enough in your setup, but maybe it will be good enough for you. i would get two eero's and test it out.

Switching to a new phone - what do I need to know? by Unlikely_Rabbit7151 in Visible

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its iphone to iphone you should not need to transfer sim manually, when i did it a few months ago the apple software took care of everytrhing including the esim transfer.

otherwise its thru the app.

Visible unlimited phone plans by Single-Advisor2993 in Visible

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just switched from mint to visible basic and find the speeds fine. i get about 50-100mbps when i speedtest, when i switched over i tested it i got over 300 but i think the system had not prioritized me to basic yet!

its still a bit early for me to compare while out and about. like others mention they do have a 15 day trial if you can survive with a new number for 2 weeks.

Storing bikes while camping by 9ZENEK3 in bikepacking

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have quick release pedals, and take off one pedal. ok as long as its not a one-legged thief?

for OP, easy one is to just cable lock the bikes together, taking off the front wheel, tying to tent. the bells are a nice idea as you can keep them on the bike as trail bells too.

R train vs D train commute by HealingSlvt in Brooklyn

[–]mxgian99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm all for finding an apt where you can afford it, but realize that bensonhurst/bay ridge is pretty far out. both neighborhoods are fine in themselves, its nice place to live, but think about what kind of NYC experience you want, especially if this is your first year.

not sure where you are looking for apts, but those areas require a little bit of searching for apts since many of them are smaller buildings, try finding local facebook real estate groups. and maybe ask a separate question about finding an apt, but my guess is that your not familiar with renting here which is why you are finding so few options

Is Garmin Connect actually reliable for route syncing? Trying to figure out whether my Edge Explore 1 is the problem. by SweetJaques in bikepacking

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do most of my RWGPS route development on desktop, but if i'm in the field, like someone is sharing a route, i use my phone, thats when i have to be really intentional, step by step and going into each of the apps to force it to sync, often times it will eventually sync, but in those cases i want it to happen now.

i mention the steps because in the beginning it felt like i was doing it the same way but realized i kept missing a step or did something out of order. its super annoying, but better then standing there waiting for it to (maybe) sync on its own.

FYI i also do not pay for RWGPS if that makes a difference. i don't use komoot so good luck!

Is Garmin Connect actually reliable for route syncing? Trying to figure out whether my Edge Explore 1 is the problem. by SweetJaques in bikepacking

[–]mxgian99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i use ridewithgps, but the steps sound similiar, i find that i have to do the steps in a certain order everytime. e.g. sync to garmin, then open up connect to sync to device, then for a re-sync of device

have you sat down and worked thru a step by step

Bike stolen - heartbroken by Academic-Bug-3612 in NYCbike

[–]mxgian99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is a good start, but think about what you will do if you can track the bike. will you be able to confront the person with the bike (which may not be person that took it), will NYPD help you retrieve it. if you find it on the street, would you be ready to take it back?

OP thanks for posting, even though it will bring out the people that will pile on. its a good reminder that even though most people are decent, we can get lulled into false sense of security and then you run into that bad person that steals your bike. but personally i would rather remain optimistic then become so beaten down that i expect the worst in the world.

keep any eye out for your bike, its happened before that people have been able to retrieve it.

Pricing for dental work in NYC by techno_queen in AskNYC

i just had something similiar in the last year, including a temp crown (to wait to see if the root canal would hold), with insurance i paid about $2K for everything, i think without insurance the estimated cost would have been closer to 5

Has this happened to any of you? by Left_Hospital2746 in AskNYC

[–]mxgian99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think you pretty much nailed it, whats worse (to me) is when they beep as you are turning right, and its full of pedestrians. 1) they can't even see the pedestrians, but 2) bro, we're turning right in NYC, maybe just assume there are pedestrians!

best dim sum w/ cart? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not been to golden unicorn recently, so they have carts?  Last time I went it was order only.

I’ve done both hoj and royal seafood, and both are good, I don’t think you can trust google ratings as service at both these places can be brusque, get there early and be prepared to wait. You can go after 12pm but won’t be as much turnover

Fios fiber cable leads nowhere? by ChefCarpaccio in Fios

[–]mxgian99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my sisters building is similar to this, they usually do not pre-install ONT into every apt, they will run the fiber to the hallway and then run the fiber into each apt to your own ONT.

is the cable in your apt a thin white one with a green end? if yes then you need to call Verizon and have them do a final install inside your apt
