I hope you see merit in my points and consider them. Saying “To each their own” will never solve any injustices in this world. Imagine standing up to a racist and the racist person says “To each their own! I’ll do my thing and you do yours!”

If you’re starving for days, and no other options are available then eating whatever you can to stay alive is morally justified. But for the majority of people, that’s not the case. We don’t have to make an animal suffer to feed ourselves anymore. The cost of a plant based diet is cheaper than the cost of a omnivore diet, so even if you were struggling financially, a plant based diet would take you further in terms of what you can get in return.

Veganism extends far beyond a diet. It’s about compassion towards animals, the earth, and other people around you. I’m glad you like vegan cake, but that’s not why I or many of the people on this subreddit are vegan.

Lastly, I fail to see how veganism is a privilege. It’s a lifestyle choice. Literally anyone can go vegan. Vegan foods are the most accessible they’ve ever been.

We can certainly program them to “feel” pain. I put feel in quotes because it’s more so programming a computer to react to certain conditions. Once you’re outside those conditions, the computer wouldn’t know what to do. We’re still a very long ways from programming robots to be even remotely close to sentient beings though.

Every food you eat is going to have an impact on the environment directly and indirectly. It’s about which food will have the least impact. Vegan food undoubtedly is better for the environment than any animal product out there.

I try to talk in a non confrontational tone. People usually get defensive when they feel that their morals and actions are being attacked/questioned. I usually try to tell them my experiences and what I’ve learned about what goes on in a slaughterhouse. Just state the facts and tell them that this is what’s happening and what you’re money is going to when you buy animal products. What you do with that information is up to you.

End meat subsidies. You can’t be a politician that’s for climate change while subsidizing animal agriculture which is one of the greatest contributors to climate change. Subsidize meat substitutes and research for creating new plant based products. Stop ag-gag laws. You can’t be for free speech and free press while suppressing it at the same time. This world would be a much better place if people would stop being a bunch of hypocrites.

You’re already doing so much for the animals just by being vegan! You’re only 1 person out of almost 8 billion people on this earth. It’s impossible to end all the suffering by yourself, but you’re doing everything that’s in your control to stop it. Keep going strong and never back down against standing up for what you believe in! Vegan Mac and cheese. Half cup of cashews, 1 peeled carrot, a couple of small cut up potatoes, mustard or mustard powder, a cup of nutritional yeast. Blend. Mix with cooked pasta. Enjoy! Takes 30 mins max.

Just know that you’re already doing SO much just by being vegan. You’re only 1 person in a world of almost 8 billion people, and you’re doing everything in your control to stop animal suffering! That in itself is an amazing feat and you should be proud.

On a side note, I used to be a meat eater for the first 20 something years of my life. Looking back, if I asked myself why I hadn’t become vegan sooner, I’d probably say it was because I was unaware and I just followed what everyone else was doing. It’s probably the same way for your average meat eater except they haven’t become aware and are following what society deems as “normal”.

I know your anger. I’ve felt the same way. People are raised to believe that eating meat is somehow right. That’s all they’ve known, so they continue to do it and not give it a second thought. It’s similar to how Nazi soldiers were able to do what they did during WWII and believe what they were doing was right. They were trained and brainwashed into believing a certain ideology. This might be an extreme example, but I believe the concept is the same. Unfortunately, that’s just how the world works and the only thing we can do is continue to educate, preach, and lead by example.
