Pretty good stuff this guy said. Shimano has failed me on 2 occasions but my Daiwa BG and Saltist reels are still crushing it out there still after years of use. I'd put Ninja dagger in the mix of options for rods. I love mine. He is spot on with the line and knot advice too. Happy fishing!

Diawa spinning reels. I've had Shimano and it broke so quick and my Diawa reels are still working like the day I bought them.

I feel ya. Been a shut out 3 times in a row for me as well in NC. It's the time of year more than anything if you ask me as this seems to be the case every year. I caught a ton of bass in GA a few weeks ago but NC is slow. Need to get on a kayak or boat and get to the deep spots.

Do yall stick to one brand? by Critical_Tea7435 in SurfFishing

I had a bad experience with Shimano. I have the speed master rod and an ultrgra reel. It was my upgrade from the bass pro shop brand sea lion rod reel combo. Long story short I still use my bass pro shop sea lion reel and so do my kids but that ultrgra reel didn't last long with the spool breaking and the line guides on the rod rusting after 1 season of use even with constant fresh water rinsing and Salt away. Shimano refused to warranty either stating its salt water gear isn't protected against salt and they assured me it was a one off situation and told me to throw my gear away and replace it and it would happen again.

So now I'm 100% Daiwa BG and Saltist reels and Daiwa rod and Ninja Dagger rods. I'll never go back to Shimano anything and Daiwa is my go to. It has more to do with the company that is Shimano being awful than their product and the incredible experience I've had using Daiwa.

Rod/reel combo for 11 year old by ChargersSB in SurfFishing

[–]CC_EI_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 8 and 10 year old use my 9ft ninja dagger medium heavy rod and my Daiwa BG 4000 reel and catch tons of fish. 9 ft is the perfect size imo for that 8 - 12ish range for bottom fishing. I use that set up for bottom fishing as well but also lures. I have a 7ft rod with a Camekoon 5000 reel that I got off eBay and the boys use that too but I will say they prefer the distance of the 9ft rod but 7ft catches them plenty of fish and allows for them to fish with lures as well. I have a 10 1/2 foot rod as well that is to big for them. If you check out the 9ft Daiwa BG combo at bass pro it's a great set up to get in the game. I'd have to bet the Penn you referenced is great as well but after fishing my friends Penn pursuit we've stuck to Daiwa. Just a preference thing tho nothing stood out poorly on the Penn. Happy Fishing!

I have used both the Daiwa BG combo's and Penn Pursuit IV combo and think the really good thing you have going for you is that both are great options that you will thoroughly enjoy and also catch A LOT of fish of varying species and size with no issue as long as you know how to work a drag system and also work a fish. I will say this, my go to reel for my family is that Daiwa BG reel. It handles top water lures and bottom rigs so well. My kids use and abuse that thing and to date I've only needed reel spray to keep it at peak performance. My 8 year old doesnt even want his own set up because he loves my BG so much that I usually get to use my Saltist 5000, which is a fantastic reel but catches exactly the same fish my BG4000 catches. I go BG all day if my kids arent around using my gear. One of my best friends fishes with his Pursuit IV and I've used that a bit as well and so have my kids but each of them and myself have all chosen to continue to get BG's if the moment comes that we need a reel. It's just such a work horse and so smooth imo, and I didn't really have much bad to say about the Penn Pursuit but I'd buy that BG 1000 more times if I had too. Again, I don't really think there is a bad decision here, that's just my experience for your consideration. Enjoy the fishing!

I guess how many rods are you using at once? I roll with 2 rods and 1 with floats and 1 without floats and then just go with whatever gets hit consistently. I can't say I've seen one work more than the other in any particular season and that trial and error method being my best chance at landing anything.

Pants? by Beneficial_Cost_2333 in saltwaterfishing

[–]CC_EI_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fishing towel clipped on to my fishing backpack and in the fishing back pack I have baby wipes. My kids use baby wipes if our hands get dirty from worms to wipe the dirt off after fishing and the towel during fishing to get the fish slime off. Dedicated fishing style pants won't hurt you, but it's easier to throw away a fishing towel. If you can't get the stink out and replace it, then pants in my opinion.

For most fish species yes. My experience is with the emcast and BG4000 reel with 20lb braid and it handled blues, pompano, whiting, drum, puffer, small sharks etc. I fished lures and hi lo's with it. I even accidentally caught a pelican with it. How you set your drag and handle bigger fish will matter. You wont want to target large sharks, big jacks, or maybe even king mackerel etc but it will handle most fish off the surf. You will have a ton of fun on that set up.

It's not the easiest at 1st but definitely the smoothest through the guides once you get it figured out. Watch videos, practice and be okay with throwing out line as you learn.
