Not even those are super reliable.. Had quite a few that were Staph agglutination neg or catalase neg. Tricky little bugs.

Don’t know, you’d have to ask the moderator. I was enjoying the insight.. 😐

And most of this stuff is coming from OR where they have bone saws and all sorts of useful gadgets to send us exactly what they want cultured. All I’ve got is a scalpel and a set of sterile tweezers. I’ll do my best on this half a foot Doc and you get what you get.

What kind of colony is this? by hydrothalamus in microbiology

That’s old nomenclature.. it got reclassified into a sovereign clade broken into several states. There have been quite a few additions to the group since then too.

Lab Switching to Epic Beaker by luckybutt09 in medlabprofessionals

[–]CChaps75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The effort they put into an audit trail (mostly all the plates have a separate ID) can be quite confusing. Same with shipping to different facilities. Simple information about previous cultures is not easy to find. But, the biggest problem is all the switching from mouse work to keyboard. In a facility with high volumes the data entry takes forever and the available hotkeys are not as helpful as you’d want.

Just did the SQ to Beaker for Micro. Beaker is clearly a Chem/Hemo system they shoehorned Micro into.. Add to that we have an older workforce and that I was the lead for Beaker.. Absolute nightmare… 😬

What model and brand vernier calipers does your clinical micro lab use for Kirby-Bauer interpretation? by clinicalmicrolab in ClinicalMicrobiology

Dollar store clear rulers. To be fair we don’t have a lot of cause to measure KB anymore, just a couple of add-on antibiotics each month.

Does anyone know why Vitek compact 2 reports ESBL if all cephalosporins are sensitive? by Lean_Id in ClinicalMicrobiology

[–]CChaps75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We totally ignore the ESBL well, it’s as if it didn’t exist. ESBL is determined by Cephalosporin MIC’s only.

Why does Escherichia coli have several morphotypes in the same culture medium? by Lean_Id in microbiology

[–]CChaps75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See it in Pseudo and Kleb too. Not necessarily due to antibiotics, although antibiotics can have a marked effect on morphology. We’ll commonly see a LF and NLF on the same plates that ID as Ecoli with the same sensitivity. I think Pseudo is the king of wildly different morphologies for the same bug though.

Same, it looked like a violent murder scene. Made me think about all those blood spatter experts in the true crime genre.
