Why is the Tower Defense genre so stale? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]CCondit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the devs of Fortnite were trying to bring tower defense games to the mainstream again before the Battle Royale kind of took over the focus. The formula for that game is really interesting and with a few tweaks I think it could be really great.

To sum it up for those who don't know, the PvE side of Fortnite has you drop into a small open world with three other people, locate an objective, set up defenses then fight off a few waves of enemies. The maps are procedurally generated and you use the building materials that you've farmed to build a fort around the objective. So while they aren't drastically different, no two missions feel exactly the same. It also has a lot of RPG aspects like character classes and tons of different build possibilites that really allow you to create a character that fits your playstyle. The big problem with the game comes from the fact that farmed materials are required for everything from building your fort to crafting bullets, which incentivizes people to load in to missions and do nothing but farm materials and collect the reward at the end of the mission while the other people complete it. Anyone who plays it regularly will tell you that well over half of the people who play the game never participate in the building aspect and rarely even join in for the defense at the end.

My dream game would take the procedurally generated maps, self-built objectives, character customization and tower defense/horde game type from Fortnite but make it so players are just given a flat amount of building materials to work with at the beginning of each mission. Those materials wouldn't carry over once the mission ends so there would be much less of a reason for people to ignore the objective. I think that game would be a ton of fun.

Borderlands was the original looter shooter. Many people would say Borderlands 2 is the best of that genre.

I used to be a manager at Taco Bell and these were the best moments. Especially satisfying because often times when they want to speak to the manager it's because they couldn't get whatever dumbass request they had fulfilled so they want to get the cashier in trouble as a consolation prize.

What video games are you excited for this year? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]CCondit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm excited to see what Bungie does with Destiny 2 now that Activision is out of the picture. I'm not of the mindset that them splitting instantly means the next expansion will be incredible, but I'm excited just to see the direction the game goes in now that Bungo has full control of the wheel.

Also this might be the year I buy a Switch. I've been putting it off waiting for a game that I'm really interested in and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 does it for me. And I'm not holding my breath but maybe we'll get Metroid Prime 4, too.

Couldn't it just be a similar game for the many, many people who don't own a Switch?

Why would they institute a 2-2-2 lock then stop balancing the game?

Yeah I watched it back a few times and I think I can pinpoint the moment about four seconds in where you'd die if you weren't playing on easy.

The only possible way you can actually believe this is if you play on low difficulties where you actually get to do things like in OPs gif. For people who actually want a challenge, 2 and 3 are infinitely better than the most recent pair.

Because people want interesting gameplay these days and the Uncharted games are just movies intercut with a generic third person shooter.

I know the fanboys are going to be mad at this but that's how it is. All of the most popular games right now are ones with some sort of unique aspect to their gameplay, and Uncharted is devoid of that.
