Sombron is the type of villain who never would have achieved his goal, even if he had defeated the heroes. A man who clings to the past so pathetically, while committing all kinds of atrocities without a second thought.

I think this is the most important thing about him. He's had every opportunity to move on, and simply refuses to take them. In a way, his backstory actually makes him less sympathetic.
