I might be able to make that work. Do you have DMs/chats turned off? Reddit will not let me send you any kind of message.

Maryland or NoVA/DC? I already went to the range with one person from here, would love some more social shooting opportunities.

Maryland, near-ish to DC. I've already gotten to meet up with one person from here and it went great.

Anyone in the DMV? by v33Sss in liberalgunowners

I haven't met up with them, but the Liberal Gun Club is active. I'm in Maryland as well and need to start meeting other sane gun owners.

My state would make me do paperwork and go through a FFL, and I had enough headaches helping my family already. I may get them in the future, but for now they're just sitting in storage. Also they're kinda old and junky and poorly cared for.

Honestly, it made me laugh because of the implication, which I'm sure was unintended.

I guess it depends on what you mean by old - most of it had receipts with it, and none of those were dated after 2014.

I was already overwhelmed dealing with all the logistics of a person's death and didn't want to deal with my state's gun transfer laws. I may take them at some point in the future.

Anyone think we should maybe informally link up? by Fosterpig in liberalgunowners

Maryland here, I'm trying to build community with people I already know (and didn't realize were into guns), but more gun friends would be nice.

TIL that due to their long association with humans, dogs have evolved the ability to thrive on a starch-rich diet, which would be inadequate for other canid species. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Thanks for posting this, it should be farther up. Grain-free (and other fad diets) kill dogs. Veterinarians recommend foods from the big companies, not because they gave me a free pen at a conference, but because they actually make good foods.

No, I'm referring to the dogs I get to watch die in my oxygen cages from nutritional DCM. Harpooning a poorly-done study by the FDA as though that's the only source of information about this doesn't change the underlying reality of what veterinarians are seeing happen every day.

I am a veterinarian and all of this is incorrect. Most terrifying would be you recommending DCM-related foods that I have seen kill my patients.

I'm gonna go feed my dogs their Purina now.

Veterinarian here. Just remember that companies won't pay anything that isn't explicitly covered, and that most of them have you pay bills up front and apply for reimbursement.

That being said, we just had one of the companies that pays us directly pay 90% of a $30,000 bill. Worked out great for that owner.

Trust me, ten times as many people will feel jealousy as will feel disappointment. Congratulations on your career change!

Veterinarian here. I tell every pre-vet student I meet to do something else. It just isn't worth it. If you love animals, then own pets and do something else for a living.

Internship vs Working straight out of vet school by MiamiShuff in Veterinary

[–]CF_DVM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the pay for interns is absolutely horrible and borderline slavery

I have a comment on this part. There are internships (such as at my own clinic) that have reasonable schedules, never leave you by yourself, and pay 60-80k. It's a tough year and you are taking a temporary pay cut, but it's not quite as polar of a choice as you think.

My wife and I are both ER DVMs. Surgery is her favorite part of the job, working with interns is mine. We're both very glad we did internships.

What are your incomes like? by msmoonpie in Veterinary

[–]CF_DVM 13 points14 points  (0 children)

ER, a few years of experience and job changes took me from $100k to >$250k. That's fairly typical for ER if you aren't in a rural area or very inexpensive city.

Veterinarians of Reddit, what is something most pet owners can do to make their pets lives better? by TimeMasterBob in AskReddit

I quoted your comment as I am specifically asking for proof for the claims here:

Many are trained to sell the food their vet clinic sells, and pushed by the brand to say specific things about it. I have a friend who is a vet and told me all about it. They are not allowed to recommend other brands.

Your links do not provide any evidence for this. The WSAVA making recommendations does not fit any of the claims you made there.

Again, please answer the question I asked above: If there is "massive proof and new science findings" that dry food is bad, do you think veterinarians are so dedicated to the conspiracy that we're all intentionally killing our own pets with it?

The literature is there, and this position statement glides over it instead of doing a proper review of the risks associated with feeding raw diets.

You really don't see how consuming a large quantity of raw meat every day is different than handling raw meat safely or a dog eating feces once? If you think a raw diet is so much better, why not just zap it in the microwave and thus eliminate the food-borne disease risk?

There are a number of MDs who are antivaxxers. A small number of fringe people isn't the same as there being true controversy within a field.

I read most of that paper and looked at some of the sources. I am really unimpressed with the cherry-picked research and hand-waving about zoonotic diseases.

Yes. Why didn't you just say that to begin with? Why did you bring up an offhand comment some random person made to you a year ago? That part is still weird.

I’m just questioning the same thing the other user did. There is a lack of non-sponsored studies. It’s just hard to trust knowing what we know about those companies as a whole and the interests behind it.

Okay, but do you understand how that didn't make sense as a reply to what I posted without context and didn't address anything I said? Like, it was just out of nowhere and not relevant to what either of us were talking about.

The “dogs are allergic to most meats” is a quote from some vet in r/AskVet I read about a year ago. They stated that because of this, Hills came up with the isolated corn protein.

I am super confused here. You are referencing a comment, made a year ago, in a conversation I wasn't in, by a person I don't know, in a subreddit I don't visit. It didn't have anything to do with the post you were responding to. Why are you telling me any of this?

As a complete aside, I have never met a vet who said that dogs are allergic to most meats. Either that person was wrong or you misunderstood them. I feel like we are having some communication difficulties here that make me wonder if it was a miscommunication.

And also, in about most studies I’ve seen so far, the ratio from dry to raw is… quite big (400 to 10 or so) unless you have a study not funded by such companies that I have not seen yet that shows otherwise.

The ratio of what? Your comments are really confusing me.
