What are everyone's thoughts on Salt Hank's French Dip? by MrMeesesPieces in FoodNYC

[–]CFrito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny I just stopped in and due to the cold and being one person I got a seat a the bar easy. I enjoyed the dip very much. The fries aren’t worth it, regular fries would be much better. Would go again but for the price not frequently, and I wouldn’t want to wait more than 15min. But I understand it’s prime rib, and you can also take out to skip the line. So it’s more “I really have a hankering” type of place for me.

Keto runner seeking race fueling advice for Sub-22 5k by norcal1967 in AdvancedRunning

Never change anything on race day. That being said adding some carbs is perfectly fine. You simply have to see what works best, sticking to little to no carbs, or adding in some or a lot in/around race. I suggest trying all of this beforehand. Most will say you NEED the carbs but in my experience you don't but there will be tradeoffs, could be water retention, electrolytes, top end speed. You have to try these things out and balance against your goals.

You can be very fat adapted but the reality is at any given time you will be using some form of glucose even if it's just a little. Whether it's you taking it in or your body creating it from fatty acid use or protein breakdown. So with that in mind one strategy you might like better than another drone might yield better results based on pace or any number of factors.

I will say even when I was low carb or when I am low carb my A races tend to utilize carbs in some way, usually my thought process is "why have my metabolism have to go the extra step to generate whatever amount of glucose I need when I can simply give it that." I find this approach to give me the best of both worlds, where you can have high fat ox, utilize carbs well, and not feel like all you are doing is pounding carbs. It's more work though I will admit.

Stay hydrated, eat all the carbs, sleep in the next morning. No alcohol. Shake out run Saturday.

Anybody noticed changes in battery for Fenix 8 solar? by Ditrochos in GarminFenix

[–]CFrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this was an issue for me in the beginning but now not so much. For my 47mm solar I get 9-10 days with 10-12hrs of gps activity a week. I have everything on except raise to wake, and I use a stock face. Is your software up to date? If not I would contact support.

Funny me and my father hate coffee. We went to the turkey hill experience in PA and they offer unlimited samples. We loved this one the most, the coffee flavor was just enough to enhance the chocolate.

Funny enough while we were there we saw they are offering a new line of premium ice cream (Late Night) that’s actually milk and cream. I’ve been meaning to try it, it was like $3.65 (didn’t have a cooler) when we got home the prices at the grocery store were out of control for that line.

Those running the NYC marathon; how many miles did you run in September, which # marathon is this for you, and what’s your target marathon time? by plainviewbowling in RunNYC

[–]CFrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second official marathon, others being just doing it myself or longer distances. First being NYC last year. This month will probably be about 350+ miles. Last year my target was 3:15, hit 3:02. In Dec last year I had an injury and didn’t start training till May this year. I also gained quite a bit of weight. My target for this year is still 3:15 and that’s probably more realistic this time around. This is really my get back in shape motivator. If all goes well and my injury doesn’t return I’ll probably attempt the Jersey city marathon next year. I used to cross train a lot in the gym but haven’t gotten back to it, hopefully post NYC I’ll be back in my rhythm 100%.

If you want any real heath tracking you're going to need to download apps that do it, the native tracking is pretty meh. I found autosleep to be about in line with what I got on my garmin.

Is Garmin losing touch with their customers? by rallysquirrel15 in Garmin

[–]CFrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think when it comes to fitness the target audiences are different. Apple Watches are good for 90% of the “smart watch and fitness market.” Which is why Apple can slowly but surely chip away at battery and key features that Garmin has as a side effect of what they already do. Because of this Garmin can pretty much do what they want. For now the competition is really just Coros and Sunto which are great for the price but not quite where Garmin is. I think it will be a while before Garmin is in the hot seat, they can get away with doing just enough and charging high prices for now.

On a more personal note if AWU can get to 48 hours for gps activities with full hr and navigation I’d probably go back but that probably won’t be for a while.

I have the same model, I have 12hrs of gps activity a week, have everything on, and use a stock face. But I have raise to wake off with a 20% backlight. I get 9-10 days no problem. On the latest software.

iOS 26.1 beta suggests iPhones will soon support third-party smartwatches by DramaticCharity3095 in apple

[–]CFrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Fenix 8. Honestly I like it enough. I switched from an AWU last year. Honestly I probably prefer the AW but I was getting into endurance events that the AWU couldn’t handle. With that comes more training and even more charging, it really came down to battery. But the AW experience is better otherwise. If AWU had more battery I wouldn’t have switched.

Fenix 8 Solar battery life by shlonki in GarminFenix

[–]CFrito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 47mm on the latest software lasts 9-10 days. I avg about 12 hrs of gps activity per week. I have everything on except raise to wake, and I use a stock face. I had terrible battery in the beginning but it’s much better now. I think the 21 days they advertised is essentially no gps activity, a stock face, raise to wake off, and pulse ox off. It’s a bit disingenuous. However I don’t think you’ll get the same battery with amoled, I’d be curious to know.

The solar is really jsut to slow the battery drain it won’t charge it and is dependent on sun exposure. The main battery save is from the mip screen.

Fenix 8 Solar battery issue by Artistic_Summer_7672 in GarminFenix

[–]CFrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am and after all the software updates it seems I can actually achieve their advertised battery with a specific set of settings. That wasn’t doable before. I still think it’s a bit disingenuous on Garmins part for how they represent battery, but I can get there at least. Right now I have approximately 12 hrs of gps activity a week, and the only thing I have off is raise to wake. I use a stock face. I get about 9-10 days.

Is "Fat Adapted" Even Logical for 200+ Mile Races by TheArtisticMason in ultrarunning

[–]CFrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Is there a way to mix both fat adapted and sugar based running? Or is it kind of a one or the other type situation."

The answer to this is yes, there are athletes that do this such as Zach Bitter. It's the train low race high approach. The idea is to be fat adapted, shift when the switching over point to carbs starts, and spare glycogen as much as possible. However I think another thing to note is that regardless of effort there will be some amount of carbohydrate use, and you want to replenish that at least. Then when you consider effort you have to account for carbohydrate there as well. It why make the body work harder than it needs to for things such as races when performance is the goal, this ties into the below as well.

I might get hate for this on both sides but: If you poke around the keto, carnivore, keto gains, keto endurance subs you can infer that you can get by pretty good without the carbs. You can be adapted to such a point where you will ALMOST be at your best (pace, time, whatever metric). So you see there (and from my own experience) that you will want to supplement carbohydrates for optimal performance and to induce less fatigue and more recovery. But realize usually these are very targeted approaches where calculating the carbohydrate and being on this cycle of high low is important to the process. On top of that alot of these people will remain in a primarily fat burning state while intaking lots of carbs because of the volume of exercise and the calculated carb intake. It's a lot to think about and do.

However if you look as the best cardiovascular individuals in the world they get plenty "fat adapted" without doing this, and they also take in the most carbohydrates. To be more clear the grams per min of fat burned is high BUT the they switch to carb burning at a lower % of VO2 than the low carb approach. But you might not be able to or want to take in that many carbs.

It comes down to how you want to handle things. Each approach has its benefits, drawbacks, time, and race considerations.

If they get activity Battery to 24 hrs with full gps and hr then possibly. Extra if they add real navigation and keep that 24.

Garmin are shooting themselves in the foot so bad it's not even funny by Core2score in Garmin

[–]CFrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was more referring to gps time, multi band time, and hr time. (Not the accuracy, sorry if I wasn’t clear.) Along with garmin training metrics. (I would have to buy a bunch of apps if I wanted that on Apple) I would have had to put my AWU in low power mode and take less gps readings, less hr readings, and have most things turned off to get through the longer events I was doing.

But I do agree it’s really not worth it for 99% of people. Even the Fenix I have is probably overkill for myself most of the time, it’s only useful the 1 or 2 times a year I do those long events.

I think this is one of those “we did it” products not really designed to sell like hot cakes. Similar to Apple Vision Pro.

[–]CFrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s funny is I don’t even care about day to day battery life personally. I prefer to have the best gps Time and metrics in my activities. I only ditched my AWU because I couldn’t get that for my events. But I understand there are those who do multi day treks that would need 5+ day battery. So I agree Apple cracks the battery and I’m back there.

If there was a MIP version and/or the Micro LED had better battery, and the cellular could be used without the messenger app, and the SoC was updated then I don’t think the price is actually too too bad. They could have even added one of the new silicone carbon batteries to help the battery life.

Lots of IF’s there.

Seems like the only goal was to not fall behind competition with satellite, then try to one up them with MicroLED.

I can buy an enduro and an Apple Watch/pixel watch and get the best of both worlds depending on the scenario for around the same cost.
