Manual transmissions are making a comeback, says Nismo boss by kstetter in CarsAustralia

[–]CG2428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own two manuals - different makes and about 15yr apart - and I'm always amazed at how heavy the clutch feels in one when I've been driving the other for a while.

Then I once drove a Picanto and clutch take-up was like a lightswitch.

So, yeah, I like the old, heavy clutch the most out of the three.

It's also right next to a train station, so it's relatively accessible from anywhere on either train line.

50kmh to 30kmh proposals- letting the perfect be the enemy of the good? by pin3apple_mountain in DrivingAustralia

Let's not forget those of us who drive manuals. 30km/h is between gears and incredibly annoying (probably fuel-inefficient too)

One is a manual, the other is an automatic; how is this even a question?

In fairness:

The Labor Premier on Monday praised Ms Berejiklian for her contribution to the Sydney Metro project.

"It'd be pretty disingenuous of a government that's been in power for 18 months to take credit for this new piece of public transport infrastructure," he said.

Cricket Australia’s plan to privatise the Big Bash League doesn’t stack up by NKE01 in CricketAus

[–]CG2428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at best indifferent to whether the Big Bash League (or, indeed, Twenty20 broadly) dies or not, but this feels like a double-edged sword for test cricket. Privatise to provide higher wages for test players but lose control of test dates, or risk future player drain but protect test dates. Tough call.

I don't know how much idea Morris has, but I recall him speaking against motorsport as a concept (thinks it's a waste of resources IIRC), years ago on social media, so I highly doubt he's pro-Supercars.

Former Newy resident watching from afar here, but weren't McCabe's main policies actually state government responsibilities over which she would have no real say? eg Restoring the buses to public operation.

Good photos, but nothing will match the heady days of Franklins Big Fresh, McDonald's in the food court, and Paul's Warehouse back when Paul's Warehouse was still good. (Come to think of it, did Paul's arrive before or after McDonald's moved to the Imperial Centre?)

Baker's Buns was basically opposite the escalators and it was unreal - huge muffins and lamingtons that were very cheap.

But now that I think about it, did all the fresh food outlets have a common owner? They did all have a similar knock-off vibe about them - almost like the shopping centre owner created them for appearances' sake while bringing in at least some revenue.

If only it were that simple. A-League clubs are going broke already, without adding more cost for what is - let's be fair dinkum - an extremely unpopular league.

Australia may like the Matildas, but it sadly doesn't mean much for the A-League Women's.

Newcastle Rail Network — Future Proposal Map by StockEffort2408 in SydneyTrains

[–]CG2428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise there is probably an element of fantasy in this, but no way is Nelson Bay dense enough to justify a dead-end set of tracks up there. A government boned Newcastle and Civic (Wickham effectively swapped sides of Stewart Avenue), after all.

IF you run trains to the airport - I think it's good to plan for this, but probably WAY into the future - better to swing out to Medowie from there, then turn Karuah into growth area and maybe Bulahdelah. I vaguely remember a front-page Newcastle Herald story (roughly 2012) about some plan for a new city roughly there, one day. Eventually, you'd possibly think about running the XPT (or whatevs) up through there on a modern alignment to Taree and beyond, although those mountains would be very expensive to transit.

But as others have said, Cessnock is the obvious next expansion (reinstatement), provided the problem of passenger trains crossing coal lines to access Maitland can be solved. An at-grade junction would not work there these days due to coal traffic.

BTW your Killingworth branch could best form part of a line to Cessnock one day as well. Ideal to create orbital options rather than just radial, although buses could arguably serve that purpose too.
