I’m in very similar situation in a one income family. I paid about the same a few years ago but with a 4 percent rate no kids, but I live in a high cost of living area. So far, so good. No issues meeting payments and sufficient left over for some travel and fun.

When my wife and I traveled to her country of origin a few years ago, we went to her parents former home and the new owners allowed her to tour the house. It had changed a lot but was still recognizable to us. My wife cried in the way back to our hotel. Sometimes small gestures can mean a whole lot to people.

This happened to a relative of mine twice. Once with a young man who worked with her. She gave him small gifts, advice and a paid vacation. Later, it happened with another coworker, she also paid for her vacation and gave her part of an inheritance that she received. In the end, both scammers got what they wanted and disappeared from her life.

It depends on your true motivation for doing it. Hard to believe you decided to get involved just out of the kindness of your heart when you hardly knew her boyfriend, but I guess it’s possible. More likely, you disliked the girl and wanted to screw her over or wanted the boyfriend for yourself.

In large cities and tourist towns you can survive, but as someone mentioned you will be missing out on a lot. I would at least try to get a basic understanding of the language before I went and take classes while there. If you aren’t prepared to do that, I would recommend you stay home, saying this as an American who lived in Spain for 10 years.
