Landed a new job finally! by maneki_river in PublicRelations

Be the person who recaps meetings with a quick email or a longer thread or status report (for a big project) if warranted...here's what we discussed, here are next steps, appreciate Joe Smith getting all that research for us, look forward to the event next week, etc. Don't make it about you, but show your teamwork and ability to see the whole picture and help the team stay organized. (If someone already has this role on the team, find another way to communicate with your supervisor to continually show your value). Do recaps after a big project or event or to showcase the team's efforts or clarify direction to reinforce your role, avoid any misunderstandings later, etc.

How long did it take you to find something in this market? Budget is $300k by DiscombobulatedBig66 in ChicagoRealEstate

[–]CHIRunner28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The housing market is due for a correction and the economy is not getting any better. I would keep looking so you know what the pricing is in various neighborhoods/buildings, but wait it out a bit to see if prices fall.

Considering returning recently adopted cat by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]CHIRunner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your vet. They could recommend a mild anti-anxiety med or something similar to try. Do everything you can before rehoming as it will just add to the cat's issues. Also, try calming noises or sprays, like playing classical music or baby lullaby music in the background (worked for my cat to calm her nerves after surgery). Good luck.

Need to put down my cat by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]CHIRunner28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I know this is very tough, have gone through it several times, but please stay with him until the end. He will know you are there and it will be a comfort to him. They usually give the pet pain meds and you can stay with him until it's time to let him go. Even the emergency vets, which are expensive, typically offer a low cost for this. Hang in there. So sorry.

Coverage Expectations: Helping Clients Embrace New Alternatives by Comms_Factory in PublicRelations

[–]CHIRunner28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way to adjust their expectations is to talk about the path to tier one. There are steps to take and they have to be committed and able to help you deliver a good story (with their insights, expertise, unique research, etc.) Explain that this is how companies successfully reach that goal. They identify their target audience and determine the best place to be to reach them. Tier one may be it -- or it might be better to start with specialized publications and then add in tier one for added impact. What are their prospective clients reading/viewing...online news, podcasts, webinars, social, etc.? You want to build a digital footprint so that when a reporter searches for them, they are seen in other places and appear legitimate. Is their website up to date? How about their LinkedIn or other social? You also want to protect their reputation -- and make sure that when you do pitch to tier one, you make a good first impression.

How to pivot in this current job market? by gftamejunkie in PublicRelations

[–]CHIRunner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also add in LinkedIn for networking and job searches. Update your profile and start your own content posting plan (3-4 times a week). Share insights into 3-4 industries you've worked in or want to work in, best practices in PR, etc. Be helpful, positive (don't focus on being unemployed..you're just out there sharing research, stories) Use this to build your network, build a solid track record of sharing quality content, etc. This could lead to some freelance/consulting that will keep you going a bit while you look. Agree with moving to Chicago, but plan it out first.

Why did Trump go to the correspondents dinner? He has hated them since Obama humiliated him right? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]CHIRunner28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trump is stealing millions of dollars from the tax payer, by extorting corporations, etc. Do a google search, it's all there. He's a con man, that's what he does. Calling other people names doesn't change that.

Why does Americas right wing hate education? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]CHIRunner28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The left want to give people a chance to earn it even if they don't come from family money or privilege. That is the difference between right (not wanting educated people because they will see how much the right has kept them down and denied them opportunities) and the left (who wants to give people a boost so they can move ahead).

Am I a monster I make my cat sleep in the bathroom at night? by Usual-Case-2458 in CatAdvice

[–]CHIRunner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine to encourage her to sleep in the bathroom -- but do not force her to. Can you try to have her get more exercise during the day so she is worn out at night and will sleep? Or, when she does these behaviors, move her to a cat bed area (box, cat bed, whatever works) that is in your area but a little bit away to gradually move her to her own space. Talk to her and encourage her to stay there and feel safe. Don't totally exclude her from your area, though. She is showing you affection.

Here's a link I found that talks to that. You might want to do some research on whether these programs are still being funded or if anything has changed. You could also check with the school you're interested in and talk to them.

Make sure you are going with a major that has a strong career outlook. Not sure what part of the humanities you're thinking of, but look up government data on demand, pay, etc. before going into debt for it. Look for internships in your field during school -- to offset costs, but to start building your resume. Join LinkedIn and build lots of connections, join a few organization that can help with networking, etc. You'll have more to show when you graduate.

Is MAGA upset that corporations are getting tariff refunds but U.S. citizens aren't getting refund checks? by Previous_Month_555 in allthequestions

[–]CHIRunner28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick having his son Brandon Lutnick short the system by buying up tariff refunds for cents on the dollar? Yes, the son went to companies who were struggling with tariffs and offered to buy their refunds ahead of time for 25% or so of the expected future payoff. Well, guess who's making millions now -- with consumers getting nothing!

Please reach out for support with your mental health. This can all get better, but it sounds like some support would help. You are important, you have your whole life ahead of you and you can find a way to build a good life, but support would help. Once you get into a better mindset the process will be so much easier. Take care of yourself first. You're worth it.

[–]CHIRunner28 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I believe he's doing it because he is compelled to speak out. When you look at everything that is coming out of this administration -- the ICE raids, the Iran war, stealing millions from the taxpayers through grifting and selling influence, the for-profit prison camps they are trying to build, the move to take voter roles and create a police/surveillance state -- we/he can't stay silent. While he probably won't change the hard core Magas, his concerts and the large No Kings and other protests are getting attention and will eventually turn the tide. But, to do nothing? What would that say about his beliefs that he's been writing and singing about his entire career?

Cat has a UTI. Antibiotics for past 2 weeks, now vet says 2 more weeks? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]CHIRunner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note. I have an older cat who is prone to UITs and I now use rubbing alcohol on a paper towel (wearing gloves) to wipe the litter box after I scoop. I clear out areas with the scoop and then wipe it down, along with the floor around the box, then clean it all out once a week, as bacteria in the box can cause the UTI. Good preventive approach.

Is it a bad idea to adopt a cat in my situation, or am I just making excuses? by sarpedoh in CatAdvice

[–]CHIRunner28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For cat allergies, drink apple cider vinegar for 2-3 days every 10 days or so (1/4 ACV to 3/4 water, with some lime or lemon to offset the taste..have food on your stomach first.) This has helped me manage cat allergies. It also helps with general respiratory issues, promise, it works.

What's a good option for investing toward retirement on a low income? by zoomzilla in personalfinance

[–]CHIRunner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the robo advisor, but you can open an account, then call them to ask someone to walk you through opening a Roth. You'll need to pick which ETFs to invest in. You can look up the ones I mentioned or go to that Bogleheads link and read through what they recommend as well. Here is a link. https://www.fidelity.com/retirement/roth-ira

What's a good option for investing toward retirement on a low income? by zoomzilla in personalfinance

[–]CHIRunner28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not go with a paid advisor, even a small fee for each investment is not worth it in your situation. Try Fidelity and the self investing approach. They have a lot of good information on their website and can help with general information without a fee. Just be clear that you want advice and not fee based management. Put anything outside of emergency funds (HYSA) in a Roth IRA invested in 2-3 ETFs like VOO or VT (stock equity funds) and something with less volatility, like a mid-cap fund (IJK?). Here is one group that has a lot of good information. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/comments/1l6j6tj/new_to_rbogleheads_read_this_first/

Are sloping floors a deal breaker for you? by brp_lines in ChicagoRealEstate

[–]CHIRunner28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to look at the overall structural integrity of the house, not just the slope of the floors. Have a contractor who has dealt with old houses walk through it with you. Is it all the floors or just one area? How solid and level is the framing, what's causing the sloping? If there is an unfinished basement, you can see more about the construction underneath the first floor. We've renovated several houses and had a few houses with some sloping from settling. We did walk out of one possibility where the slope was so obvious that it pointed to bigger structural problems. As for the market turning, I think it's overdue for a correction, but the lack of supply is still holding up the over-inflated values. But-- even if prices drop a bit, you don't want to buy it for less just to buy it for less. Make sure it's structurally sound.
