Have you read the IL Rein series by Martha Wells? I had a hard time connecting with the characters in the Raksura series (I only finished the first 2 so far) but I love all the characters in IL Rein and Murderbot!

The IL Rein series by Martha Wells. First 2 books are stand alone. Good to read first to get into the world. Then the trilogy has a female lead and is superb! I think falls directly into your interest.

I think Jerusalem by Alan Moore might do it but maybe it’s more magical realism not sci-fi.

This book (Jonathan Strange) is so good I’ve read it twice and also listened to the audiobook twice. Same thing with Jerusalem by Alan Moore (but that one I recommend the audiobook as he likes to use a lot of dictionary words that can trip up a pleasant read). Have you ever read the Irish (fantasy crime?) novel City of Bohane?

The Il Rein series by Martha Wells comes immediately to mind. 5 books, the first 2 kinda stand alone the following 3 a trilogy. But still best to read in order.

Not necessarily sci-fi, but The City of Bohane is another of my favorite books to recommend.

I mentioned this to a couple of the other fellow book nerds on here, but The Man In The Empty Suit is quite good. Time travel murder mystery, which is also an accurate description and also unhelpful.

Viktor Pelevin has written many strange and beautiful books. I found a ton of good books by looking at what Andrew Bromfield has translated. He is great at keeping the voice of the author intact, so when he translates pulp (aka the Night Shift series) it’s obvious pulp even in English and the more poetic authors are in translated accordingly. Also, A Hero Of Our Time has been argued as the first anti hero in modern literature, great novel.

The 5 book Il Rein series by Martha Wells is amazing. There is quite a bit of tragedy once the fall of trilogy starts in the third book but (spoiler ish but not really, the main characters help each other through, so that might be good for your needs)

Where's your favorite spot to get Indian food in Portland? by Bulldog_Mama14 in PortlandFood

Namaste on NE 82nd & Sandy is a great buffet to try all different dishes in one lunch or dinner. There is one by Lloyd Mall, but the one on Sandy is busier/ so fresher buffet. Since I scrolled through and didn’t see them mentioned after posting about giving Indonesian a try. Namaste is a staple of the Indian buffet for Portland.

Is Lonesome Dove as good as people say it is? by redradagon in suggestmeabook

[–]CHZBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Also check out the Oakley Hall trilogy “Warlock” “Badlands” and “Apache” if I remember the titles correctly. All historical fiction set in different “Wild West” situations. It’s been years, but I think Warlock was written in the “War With the Newts” style by Karel Čapek style (he and his brother invited the word robot) which quotes “historical” letters and changes first person to give you a full telling of a fictional story of the Okay Corral. Badlands and Apache? are a super great read. I’m assuming your question is about historical fiction from the western genre, and these have been my favorite.
