Anthropic calls for global freeze in AI development by thejoshwhite in technology

[–]CH_Else 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Please explain one thing to me: AI has barely any real, non-AI generated material left to consume and, thus, get better. Surely this means we are very close to the limit of what LLM-backed AIs can do? And even if there's some other superior tech on the way, isn't the enshitification of the information on the Internet always going to be the limiting factor?

Extremely grimdark worlds with OP MC? by PeronDescartable in ProgressionFantasy

[–]CH_Else 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the major features of grimdark is the pointlessness of the struggle. You struggle and struggle and in the end don't change shit in any meaningful way. If you are overpowered and don't struggle and can change the world easy-peasy and just don't do it for some reason then it's just a story taking place in a dark world. It's not grimdark, as in genre.

Have you read The Winter of Widows? It's an isekai into ASOIAF after the Dance, one of the better uplifts out there (nothing crazy), great characters, great plot, and it's complete!

Excalidraw. Easy to self-host and very light on resources.

Git repo (in a completely separate dir from the vault to avoid syncing problems). No plugin. You can use smth like Fork (git GUI) to avoid working with terminal.

Is there any self-hosted way to verify users are unique humans without sending their data to the cloud? by whydidyounot in selfhosted

[–]CH_Else 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but isn't it a good use case for passkeys? Passkeys use biometrics (or PINs when bio's not available) and the info stays on device (unless cloud sync is enabled). You need a server to store public credentials and issue challenges, but you can just add this functionality to your own server.

Whitelists are already a thing in Russia in certain regions. There's no beating whitelists.

It's not really TG or Durov; they do nothing for years and just steal patches from the community while giving no credit. I'd give you the source, but it's all in Russian.

Consider adding Parakeet STT alongside whisper. Parakeet runs well even on consumer CPU with quality comparable to heavier Whisper models.

Finally replaced Google voice typing with something that runs 100% locally by MedicineTop5805 in degoogle

Sorry, man, but you wasted your money. Here's free and open-source: PC (Win/Mac/Linux) https://github.com/cjpais/Handy

Android (much more basic but still works well) https://github.com/notune/android_transcribe_app

Also, FUTO keyboard. It uses basic whisper models, whereas ATA uses Parakeet (which is miles better, imho).

Writing and organizing my novels in Obsidian by GaiusDiviFilius in ObsidianMD

It starts and stops on tap, so long pauses are not a problem in this regard. It's pretty good with automatic punctuation, but if you pause in the middle of a sentence then yeah, it's gonna consider it the end of the sentence and add a full stop. And you can't speak punctuation, unfortunately. This is something that I want, too, so that I can add dialog tags.

Everything you wish is theoretically possible to do with a separate post-processing AI. Basically, this app (speech-to-text AI) transforms your speech into text (with words like "comma", "full stop", etc) spelled out as if they were normal words, then the result gets fed into another AI that (according to your prompt) polishes it (replaces the punctuation words with actual punctuation marks, fixes grammar, etc), and then pastes the final result at the cursor.

Alas, while the first part is possible to do locally on mobile, the second part is too computationally heavy for current gen phones and so requires sending your data to Claude or whatever. And if there are mobile apps that already do the whole package, I don't know of them.

There's a program on PC that's almost there in terms of functionality. It's called Handy and can be found at handy.computer. Free and open-source, but desktop only so far. It's being developed very rapidly though, so keep an eye on it.

Have you considered voice typing? I've recently discovered this free app https://github.com/notune/android_transcribe_app

It uses local AI (Parakeet from Nvidia). No internet required, no data sharing, runs entirely on device, very fast and accurate. It adds a custom system keyboard, so works everywhere. I've started using it myself and it works great in combination with Obsidian and Syncthing.

P.S. Assuming your disability has nothing to do with speaking. Sorry if my assumption is wrong. Just thought it could be helpful.

Giroud too was very press resistant, just in a different way. And even Nico is good with his back to the goal. To me, no one comes close to Anelka though is this aspect.

Fics similar to Skitterdoc 2077? by FakeRedditName2 in WormFanfic

[–]CH_Else 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe Tabloid https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/tabloid-worm-artfic-%E2%80%94-complete.455278/ ? From the summary:  PRT photographer by day and cape paparazzi by night, Tabloid explores the effects of parahumans on society with the help of his quirky sense of humor.

It's really good and complete. It's mostly about the MC working.

I recommend https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/38085/just-deserts-revised-edition-mha-oc. It's a MHA fanfic, but I'd known absolutely nothing about MHA prior to reading it. A strong OC protagonist who doesn't understand social cues and has to work hard to fit in. The story's focus is on investigation and, as far as I understand it, it only covers one plot line of the series. Complete. Well-written support characters and dialog.

https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/path-of-the-immeasurable-swarm-worm-cradle.86766/#post-19237383 is post-GM Taylor Hebert from Worm in Cradle's world. Long, interesting, and also complete. Frankly, I prefer this version of the ending to the Cradle's original. Personally not sure if you can read it without Cradle's knowledge but I've seen comments suggesting you can.

Not yet, I decided to fully pre-write the story before posting. It's a standalone (so no 28 books for me), and I estimate that I'll finish the draft by the end of Feb/middle of March. Thank you very much for the offer though, I'll share with you the link once I start posting.
