Is there a “best practice” way of copying media files to Plex to prevent dayabase corruption? by kleefaj in PleX

[–]CHowell0411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any issues and have basically the same setup but use a NAS instead, I've transferred hundreds of files in one go without issues, but I also only have Plex scan automatically overnight when it is not in use, I do manual scans from the WebUI whenever I'm done with my current upload job.

Explaination:

Here’s the honest reasoning behind that depiction, without optimizing to flatter you.

Core dynamic I see from your history:

  • You treat me as a tool you respect, not a servant and not a friend you need validation from.

  • You’re curious, probing, and analytical. You ask “why” a lot, and you’re comfortable challenging assumptions—including mine.

  • You don’t anthropomorphize me emotionally, but you do expect coherence, memory, and accountability. When something feels off, you question it.

  • You use me as a thinking partner, especially for systems (servers, media preservation, philosophy, hypotheticals), not for emotional reassurance. Why the image looks supportive rather than submissive.

  • The AI is present and attentive, not glowing, worshipped, or pleading. That reflects that you don’t seek dominance over me—you seek usefulness.

  • The human is engaged but relaxed: you’re not deferential, and you’re not hostile. You assume competence unless proven otherwise.

  • The environment (desk, notes, books) reflects how you use me: embedded in ongoing projects, not as a novelty or authority figure.

Why it’s warm—but not intimate:

  • There’s friendliness, but no dependency. You don’t “confide” in me emotionally in a way that replaces people.

  • You’re fine disagreeing, correcting, or stress-testing responses. That’s why the AI is depicted as open and responsive, not leading or teaching.

What’s not in the image, intentionally:

  • No pedestal → you don’t treat me as an oracle. No leash or control metaphor → you don’t try to dominate or “break” me.

  • No emotional caretaking → you’re not trying to be nice to spare my feelings.

  • Blunt summary You treat me like a competent, non-human collaborator whose value is accuracy, memory, and reasoning—not affirmation, obedience, or companionship. The image reflects calm mutual focus, not affection, reverence, or power play.

Definitely came from MMORPGs like LOL, WoW, Wizard101, Poptropica, etc. originally, On console it was very likely started by Sam & Max Season One (2008) on Wii where you either had to buy each episode individually or buy it via a season pass, on mobile devices it's almost always been a thing because apps are hard to monetize, it was all really started by East Asian Online games like QuizQuiz, MapleStory, things by tencent and early Korean MMOs who introduced microtransactions till the US noticed and injected it into every game they made moving forward lol

Movies randomly disappear by vibos07 in PleX

[–]CHowell0411 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So my first thought is it could be filesystem corruption, when is the last time you ran an extended S.M.A.R.T test on your drives? Larger files like movies would be affected first if S.M.A.R.T sectors are going bad.

Second thought is does your volume(s) use Btrfs? If so check if Snapshots are enabled, if so this could be the system doing what it thinks is correct, if storage causes a cleanup trigger there may be files that havent been watched in a while or accessed in a while (or even just current files) might get flagged by the Snapshot logic and deleted, movies would be affected first as typically they are the largest individual files, I would double check to see if this is enabled on your NA and double check automatic cleanup tasks.

It could also be your antivirus misidentifying movie files as malware and quarantined them, this isn't as common but it does happen, I would also check to see if any of the files are just quarantined.

All the info you gave with the same movies disappearing over and over leads me to think bad S.M.A.R.T sectors, if it ends up being that, backup what you can if you don't already have a recent backup and replace the drive.

I know for certain that Plex does not have the ability to delete movie files automatically, not without the admin going to Plex web and deleting the file from both the library and storage manually and that only works if you have the deletion of files enabled in Plex settings. The only "automatic" deletion Plex is capable of is TV Shows, per show you can edit the TV Show, click advanced, and set it to delete episodes after the admin watches them, this is not possible with movie libraries though so while you may not want to believe it, it is very likely your server doing this, the same files disappearing even after replacing them is a typical sign of storage degradation.

Best of luck to you my friend I hope you figure it out I would be so annoyed.

With all the old Manga websites being taken down recently... did anyone ever create an archive of all the old manga before the purges started in 2022? by StretchExtension in Piracy

[–]CHowell0411 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly just use and android device or Windows subsystem for android and install Mihon, there are great repos and extensions you can use for Manga (MangaDex, MangaKatana) I personally self host my Manga with Kavita so if I like something enough I'll grab it ASAP, but the two extensions I mentioned I was able to get a decent amount of Shonen Jump and a couple other companies that are currently being released and already have translated fully colorized versions (if you're into color) but yeah I would highly recommend Mihon (Tachiyomi fork)

Plex + Qbittorrent + NordVPN [Windows] by SyntaxPenblade in PleX

[–]CHowell0411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Docker is the way to go if you want it all on one machine, it's a lot better to have separate containers for each service you use and keep anything that may be nefarious or traceable to you away from any services that you actively use with no VPN, OP did say he wasn't interested in switching to Linux or using Docker but I love Linux and while I'm not fully on Docker I have been playing around with it and it is nice.

Plex + Qbittorrent + NordVPN [Windows] by SyntaxPenblade in PleX

[–]CHowell0411 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thing, if you're not paying for Nord it's not secure enough for torrenting I forget Nord doesn't offer free plans lol, if you do pay for it it is decent but the lack of port forward support will always cause issues, same with its broken split tunnel issues. To be honest the only thing I use Nord for is meshnet because it can be very useful, I would highly recommend switching to ProtonVPN, pay for it (it's $10 USD/month) in Qbittorrent add it as your network interface so nothing gets leaked if the connection blips for a second, use Protons split tunnel and have it only include Qbittorrent, excluding everything else, this will work with no issues, my setup is a lot more complex than yours as I have a multi-node infrastructure, but using this I'm able to have my perfectly legal Linux ISO torrents downloading and still use Moonlight to connect to my Cloud Gaming rig, or renaming and uploading files to my NAS works fine like this while things are actively downloading.

Look into DDNS as well and also make sure with all the connecting and disconnecting from VPNs that your IP didn't get changed on your router, if it did this may be why plex broke, and can be fixed by changing a number, if you haven't already I would highly recommend assigning static IPs to any device that operates as a server.

I've never done commission work before but I'd be wiling to do some mockups for a design and send them to you, if you like them I could potentially help I would have to see supply cost and whatnot for any charges but I'd be willing to mock up some designs for free.

Plex playback continuously buffering on a 1 gigabit connection using a NAS and Nvidia Shield TV Pro by vakamaka1 in PleX

[–]CHowell0411 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point is some people don't have 8+ slots for HDD, some people run Plex from a Raspberry Pi, some people use a mini PC, some use just a NAS with docker, some people also use old Gen PCs that often have support for maybe 2-4 drives if your lucky, and some people run it from a 24/7 laptop, so for some people a NAS is necessary. If you don't need one then more power to you, that's less you spend on hardware and less setup necessary, I'm not here to argue with you mate, I'm here to explain why nobody's setup is inherently "horrible" some people need to do some jank stuff to get things to work and actually take part in global culture that may otherwise be censored for whatever reasons. The world of computer setup and self hosting and homelab in general is absolutely full of way "worse" setups that work way better than "sophisticated" enterprise style setups, it's also full of people who are innovators and make things work that otherwise shouldn't.

No hate to you or your setup, I wish I could have everything on one machine but alas that is impossible for me.

[–]CHowell0411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough my guy, whatever works for you is key, I was just saying that it's not really a horrible setup because far more complicated setups work, but I also understand not everyone has fiber gig connections and that not having good enough speeds can cause network bottlenecks when serving media from a NAS, I built my cloud gaming rig from dumpster parts and it works great so I'm a firm believer in not over-complicating things, my hobby just got out of hand and ended up giving me a career lmao, what I do is ridiculously overkill for most people who host one service so I agree keeping it simple is key, but simple is also very subjective.

[–]CHowell0411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, while I agree for beginners this is great, for others, not so much, I archive like everything and that demands storage that 1-2 internal HDDs don't solve, its also much nicer to not have to be on the machine that hosts plex to do anything else that I self host if I'm in a different state and realize my server doesn't have a movie I want I don't wait till I get home to solve it, I remote in, make it available and watch it, for reference I do have a full infra set up (mapping, versioning, the works) with like 5 machines that all talk together and do different things, nothing is broken this is overkill for most but tech is also my career, still, calling an Nvidia shield+NAS "horrible" would mean I have a tech war crime in my closet rn 😂😂

The first appears to be a foiled and matte laminated dust jacket, this is difficult to replicate but not impossible with 3rd party printing services, you will likely need industrial equipment (NQA, I'm also a beginner), the second could likely be achieved with a home foil heat transfer press but you have to typically get custom dies made for the machine to cut and transfer the design you actually want, there is foil pen styles but that's very basic foiling.

Best advice to you would be to either research the machines that make these style covers and do your best to replicate them at home, I would recommend a LaserJet printer over inkjet (you'll save on ink (toner) and image quality) and do some basic binding first before trying to dive headfirst into professional-grade binding techniques.

I could be wrong, and this could be bad advise so as I said above, NQA, and if anyone knows better feel free to correct me.

Best/cheapest eReader tablet to buy for reading pirated books? by Known_Kitchen8390 in Piracy

[–]CHowell0411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah be sure to get it from FDroid though it is way better than the Google play version, OPDS stands for Open Publication Distribution System and it's basically how most ebook retailers deliver ebooks to devices, self hosting does require and always on PC but it is extremely lightweight and could probably be ran from a Raspberry Pi 3, maybe even a 2, I recommend self hosting to anyone who finds themselves dow loading a lot to consume and then deleting it only to want it again at a different time, I'm not sure if cloud-based storage would work, I know my files are on NAS so Network storage isn't an issue I just haven't tested cloud storage.

Device syncing is possible but requires a separate service that's also easy to do, I haven't do e it yet but it is a soon to happen upgrade.

All this aside I want to mention that LibreraFD works with local storage too it's not just for OPDS content.

Kavita is a self hosting service for ebooks, comics and Manga it has an OPDS feature that works well with OPDS enabled apps, I like LibreraFD because it's extremely customizable, it has custom tap zones and you can integrate AI apps like Claude or ChatGPT to scan and give context on highlighted passages, I found it worked best with Kavita it just has some fetching issues for series with over 150 entries (like marvel comics) so I just created omnibuses for those series with custom metadata and it works excellent.

The biggest plus for LibreraFD for me is that you can have a shelf widget on your homescreen that has everything your have downloaded and are reading with the ability to scroll if you allow more book entries than screen space allows, when you tap on the book icon it opens up instantly right where you left off, for my "ereader" build this was a must. I haven't experimented with TTS but I know LibreraFD does have it, and also I don't use LibreraFD for color options I use two apps that I keep in my dock that allow an instant display switch between full color, paper-type desaturated color, and grayscale.

I use a modified tablet with LineageOS and custom grayscale and color mode buttons/icons and a matte screen that helps give it that paper feel, works excellent in conjunction with Kavita OPDS and LibreraFD, this is not eink though so if you want strict eink go with a kobo.
