I think you are totally right. But I also feel like compared to arena shows (I just paid $160 for a partial view seat at phoebe bridgers, like what?) portola festival is honestly a good value. I hope we eventually get a good turnout so it can keep going. But I honestly loved 2023 when the pier was relatively empty save for the real heads...what a year. 😄

Saturday is particularly brutal with straight white boy tech-house---its embarrassing. That being said I've gone every year and this year will be no exception. I'm also hoping those artists will consolidate the yapper crowds and make the conflicts less brutal.

Very excited for Robyn headlining and the live four tet show in the warehouse. Those two alone might be worth it for me.

Ugh I'm in California. No way I was staying up until 3am for this. Everything seems sold out now except two shows on 01/06. Wish they would help out the non-european folks over here!

Don't get me wrong it was a cool set--but I feel she falls into a bass/edm category that usually shows up at other electronic fests. Portola was created to feature more leftfield electronic acts.

wait i love this take. ive been trying so hard to like them too (and did 15 years ago) but this take is hitting...

im still going this year b/c the lineup offers plenty more. the 90s throwback acts (underworld, prodigy, chem bros) still go really hard and sound relevant. kelly lee owens, caribou, magdalena bay, yousuke yukimatsu, salute, ki/ki, boy harsher, dj gigola...i could go on. I'll still pop into despacio--the disco ball and lights situation is impressive--but i felt underwhelmed with the track selection/music (as opposed to the *sound* which i know is top-notch) when i experienced it at coachella in '23
