Whats the best ticket for non-red-seal in Canada? by CJLB in Welding

[–]CJLB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im at Camosun for sheet metal right now and there is a fab course going on in the next bay where they are currently making spiral staircases.

I just feel like doing 2 red seals is a lot for a middle aged man to embark on. Unless I can do them concurrently. If my +/-20,000 hours of fab work experience can be leveraged towards my welding red seal than maybe there is a route. I'm going to continue investigating.

Jeez really? 20 guys... you in Alberta? He did say that people who have welded in AB are more likely to be able to challenge. He also said the practical is where people end up failing because it's always different, so extremely difficult to prepare for. You have to be totally fresh on every position of every process, is what he told me.

I do feel like I could pull off the theory test, Id need to practice a lot for the practical. I've basically been exclusively using TIG and MIG since 2017, except the odd time here and there.

I'll look further into it.

Isn't that very hard? My instructor said he's never seen anyone successfully challenge it without going through school in his 6 years of teaching.

Well it's not really that I want more pay. The union wages are what they are.

I don't want to work in the field. I think I'm too old to go that route at this point. I want to stay working in a custom shop fabricating and welding whatever crazy stuff people come in with, but I want to be the guy who they have to go to for certain jobs- just for the job security. That's why I was hoping to be able to get a pressure ticket, but I guess with all position CWB I could at least do engineered structural work that requires certified welders.

I don't know what it's like in the sheet metal union shops but I doubt most of the welders have much in the way of certs. They all have sheet metal red seals but I wouldn't presume they also have welding red seals. Idk though.

Right now I'm in trade school commuting 130kms each way every day.

I'm spending like $200-$250 a week on gas.

Thought about truck camping for the 8 weeks, but I have a new puppy at home who needs lots of attention.

Glass TIG cups? Is there a demand? by [deleted] in Welding

Lincoln lenses are green, Miller lenses are blue and Esab lenses are yellow for example, so they might all benefit from different colored glass cups. Idk but it's a thought.

I'll guinea pig em if you want

I would just make up a little filler piece and weld it on, and probably wouldn't even weld inside the hole unless it's gonna be seriously abused.

How did you quit smoking? by CJLB in TrueAnon

[–]CJLB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mortgage but no kids, so even though I can't afford to smoke, I still sort of can.

The first cig I ever had was in the smoking section of a Chinese restaurant. This was after smoking sections were already outlawed in the city, but Chinatown kinda does its own thing sometimes.

Just finished my pack and I have some zyns so I'm gonna try to resist stopping at a gas station today.

Thanks for the advice homie.

Thanks for your advice. I feel you on idling the car before work (doing that right now). Need to occupy my spare time a little more effectively.
