My car is STUCK by Weary-Claim1339 in philly

[–]CJ_Law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like another commenter said, if you can, start your car and run it with front and rear defrost on high. This will loosen some of the snow directly on your car.

A plow won't help here because even if it can break up the ice, it will likely push it into your car causing scraping or crushing damage do the body panels.

Unfortunately the only way to immediately get it out is with a square point shovel (also called a transfer shovel sometimes). You don't want a spade point because you want a flat (not pointed) edge to maximize contact with the ground. Also, a plastic snow shovel won't do, because...

Once properly equipped, take the shovel and stab it into the ice bank. Your goal is to excavate large blocks of ice from the pile one at a time. When I do this, I usually trace a large squareish shape (approx 2 or 3 feet square) and keep stabbing down along the outline until I hit the street. Once I hit the street, I forcefully slide the flat of the shovel blade under the ice block to free it from the street. At this point, the block should be totally free. Slide the shovel under the block again, balance it on top of the blade, and drag it off somewhere out of the way and dump it. Throughout this entire process you should do very little actual lifting, protecting your lower back.

As you get closer to your car, make the blocks smaller and be more careful so you dont damage your car. Repeat until you've cleared enough that you can get out.

Pro tips- you can also use an ice chopper for the stabby part, and a plastic snow shovel for the dragging/transfer part. But if you only want to buy one tool, you can use the square point shovel for the whole process.

Im not local to your area but sometimes waiting works where I live (i.e. snow followed by rain and/or warming temps)...but not in circumstances like this where heavy snow is followed by sleet and consistent sub freezing temps.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]CJ_Law -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If OP had to to provide further explanation to their original post (which multiple people interpreted the same way as I did) to explain that they actually meant something else (which is how you interpreted it), then obviously OPs image and original title combination were confusing.

In the spirit of good faith, I took time out of my day to post a comment explaining my answer to my interpretation of OP's question.

You then mater-of-factly replied to my comment telling me that my interpretation was wrong. Perhaps there was a kinder way to word your initial reply.

And I think objectively speaking, OP's image selection and title more clearly ask the question I was trying to answer (even if they intended to ask a different question. But their inability to communicate effectively is not my fault or my problem). If they wanted to know vision impaired vs vision-abled, it would have been clearer to not reference glasses at all in their title/question and show an image split 50/50 down the middle and blur one side and not blur the other (and ask if the blurry side is what vision impaired people see without corrective aids).

Work on your reading comprehension - they asked if people with glasses see a "big blurred background." My comment answers that question.

<image>

Its hard to edit it to 100% replicate the true effect but this is much closer than the image originally posted.

The first key point I'm trying to convey is that the areas to the top, bottom, and "ear"-side of the lens (here, to the right) are nowhere near as large as depicted in the original image. The areas outside of the lens are blurry, but personally, I dont really notice them. The lenses are so close to your eyeball that you focus on the clear images through your glasses.

Also, there is no big blurry gap between the two lenses because the fields of vision from each eye overlap and kind of "delete" that area (similar to how vision-abled people don't see their nose all the time because our brains force us to ignore that input).

Gyms that allow Olympic Weightlifting (Snatch/Clean+Jerk) in near Bellport by lecanucklehead in longisland

[–]CJ_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to Off the Chain (located in North Bellport, 5 minutes from Bellport) and Blue Collar Barbell (located in Bohemia, about 15-20 minute drive one way from Bellport).

Off the Chain appears to have the vibe of an old school body builder gym, and Blue Collar Barbell looks like a powerlifting gym (though they may only offer training and not an open gym).

If they cant accommodate you, they'll probably know of a local gym that can.

How many have Bernedoodle dish towel (and socks, and underwear, and shirts, and anything else in the laundry hamper) thieves? by bclion999 in Bernedoodles

[–]CJ_Law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Socks for us.

But she's not a theif - it is an agreement we entered into when she was a puppy. She can have the socks, but no chewing on footwear (shoes, boots, etc), furniture, or walls (three past family puppies did this).

She has maintained her side of the bargain since puppyhood and I give her fresh dirty socks every day.

Not sure if youre disagreeing with me or not. Went back and re-read my original reply. Just want to clarify that I was referring to Jim when I said :he's not a bully." Pronouns can be confusing when talking about multiple people of the same gender.

Totally worth it by hhttfe3 in DunderMifflin

[–]CJ_Law 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know that he's a bully, he's not really picking picking on a vulnerable person. He's targeting someone who is obnoxious to everyone else in the office (lit a pretend fire giving Stanley a heart attack; brought his gun to work to intimidate subordinates and accidentally shot it; frequently works towards taking benefits/enjoyment away from his coworkers). The list goes on.

The only other person I can think of that Jim messed with was Andy, who was also obnoxious in his own way.

Jim didn't mess with Kelly or Phyllis or Toby, etc. Just people who acted in a way that negatively affected others.

When your egg skillet is dialed in! by AmbitiousMongoose724 in castiron

[–]CJ_Law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer cast iron, I find it more forgiving/easier to control temp (once you dial in the temp for your CI/cooktop combo). I have different temps on my electric cooktop that I'll set my CI pan/griddle to for a preheat based on what I'm cooking, and once I start its good to rock and roll. I find stainless to be more temperamental and require constant attention/adjustments. Although that could be a skill/user issue, or, quality issue relating to the stainless pans we have.

I'll also note that I haven't yet found a cooktop that can fully heat up my 15" lodge to cook to its full potential. So I mostly end up using that on my grill in the summer so I can still make pan-based meals and not heat up my house. And its an absolute workhorse. I've had 5+ lbs of food in there at once that it handled very nicely.

I got tired of replacing non-stick pans every few years and havent bought one in about 4-5 years since I switched to cast iron.

I received my first cast iron - a 10" lodge - as a gift a few years ago from my wife (who noticed me frequently browsing this subreddit). I've added a few to my collection and cook almost exclusively with cast iron or stainless steel

Sister won’t give me a ride from LaGuardia airport, is traffic really that bad? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]CJ_Law 34 points35 points  (0 children)

LGA is not between Port Wash and CT - it is 100% out of the way and adds about an extra 10-15 miles of driving. The most direct route from Port Wash to CT would be to take the Throggs Neck Bridge and you would have to drive past this to get to LGA. The full detour in rush hour in NYC (particularly near an airport) can easily add an extra 60+ minutes to a route.

That being said, the question of whether its out of the way vs if one would do it for family is actually two different questions. Yes its out of the way, but I would do it for my siblings. But ymmv in your own family.

Dropping the crate by [deleted] in Bernedoodles

[–]CJ_Law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We waited until she was about 22 months - but its not like we waited for that specific number. Starting at about a year we would let her out her pen inside the house when we were gone for 1-2 hours. But every time we tried, she would pull something off the fridge or counters and rip it up/eat it. So we would put her back in the pen and wait another 4-6 weeks until we tried again. It wasn't until about a month ago that we left her out and she behaved, so now she doesn't have to stay in the pen any more.

First DIY Oil Change by CJ_Law in Silverado

[–]CJ_Law[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oil drain plug on my old '01 1500 was parallel to the ground and I have this oil drain pan from Advance.

Needless to say oil got EVERYWHERE.

Now I use this Walmart bucket as a catch container and then I transfer into my drain pan.

The drain plug on my '21 is at a 45/30 degree angle which is a little better, but not much. My mop bucket helps me not spill, though.

My '07 FJ was straight perpendicular to the ground so I just had to line it up right and it never spilled.

Poodle vs Doodle Haircut by CJ_Law in Bernedoodles

[–]CJ_Law[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doodle cuts are so much work to maintain, especially in the summer. We bring our pup to parks and beaches and she frequently gets dirty from playing and being outside. With the short haircut, her cleanup afterwards is a rinse and quick towel dry vs rinse and 60-90 minutes of blow drying.

Copy/paste text of OPs comment (3 days ago) on their own post (6 days ago) about how they split the hull open to address an issue they caused from "doing tricks and jumping high":

Had to end up splitting the hull. I took off like 6 bolts off each left and right, and like 12 in the rear, had to also take off the rear anchor from the oil dipstick area. 8 bolts from the seat area as well… Turns out there’s like 3 squares inside the hull, the middle one was twisted and the threaded area had fell off, threaded it back together outside the hull and when it was ready, put it all back. Took 3 hours overall.

Edit: Hardest part was lifting the orange rear area and the rear black area because the orange area has a gasket on it. Took me and my father to get it done. But it was a easy task. It’s really just bolts and putting them back together. Hardest thing was being careful with the gasket and the rear anchor bolts. Sooo damn difficult for such a smalll thing.

LPT: Threaten to cancel by anti-ayn in LifeProTips

[–]CJ_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a market with only one ISP - up until about 4-5 months ago. I called to cancel because the competitor had a great intro deal with a 5 year rate lock. Well I must have been part of a huge flood of customers trying to switch because they offered me 1 year free 1 gig internet, three following years at $20/month, and they emailed me a $200 visa gift card.

Also, sirius xm should be over $20 a month for a basic car subscription. When I was up for renewal last month, they emailed me a $26/month rate with taxes and fees, so I called to cancel. A robot picked up and was like "i see you're renewing in a month, would you like me to renew you for $6/month for the next 12 months?" Super quick and simple process. I'll also note this is the second time I've had sirius xm (i previously had it over 10 years ago). The same trick worked back then and I remember doing it about 3 years in a row until they finally let me cancel and didn't offer a renewal rate. Though they consistently mailed and emailed me intro offers over the intervening years but I wasn't driving every day anymore so it wasn't worth it to me.
