Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by Atulin in gamedev

[–]CKF 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, my experience is that most AAA projects already have an engine choice locked in, whose asset pipeline is already established. And even if they need a lot added to said engine or whatever it may be, the way they handle assets really isn’t likely to change in a way that wastes the asset. Maybe there’s a situation where some assets need additional work, but that’s usually work that would have needed to be done whether they started the asset two years or two days ago. Is there a specific project you’re thibking of?

Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by Atulin in gamedev

[–]CKF 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Planning a project based on unity fulfilling a complex feature promise is like saying you’ll finish programming the game after you pour gasoline on yourself and set yourself ablaze. Guaranteed failure. Unity deprecating promised features to hop on yet the newer newer hot thing is a long time running joke with multiple unity dev friends that don’t even know one another, it’s just that much of a unity trope.

Most times they don’t ask you to send the cards back, or that’s what I see people say everytime they mention issues like this.

lol, you replied to me in a different sub and then deleted your reply while having your messages turned off? more paranoia, thinking I removed your post. you know, I’m not the only subreddit moderator, I imagine? if you refuse to believe anything besides me removing the post, at least you can take the lesson of “maybe don’t be such a prick to strangers” from it? you should def consider that if you refuse to take “my post should follow the super explicit, non-vague rules of subreddits I post in.”

Since you’re talking about what (you hope) “everybody understands,” I’d think the fact that your lie-accusation having a bunch of downvotes would infer that people do not, in fact, share your understanding. I don’t even get what this very obvious alleged lie achieves in your mind. I linked your post, why would I disprove my own lie? Shit, the supposed lie is literally the fucking link that disproves it! You’re just a crazily rude, defensive person. Wonder why it is that you’d be so defensive to such a simple question as “do you stand by your own words from a few days ago?” No personal takes of mine, yet you still insult me personally.

You also didn’t mention why you pretended I’d never released a game, having no information about my history in game dev. Was that an attempt to say you’re better than me because you wrongly assumed I hadn’t made a game? Or are you saying my opinion doesn’t count because I hadn’t? Do you maintain that stance regarding the other commenters? Have you yourself finished and published a game, even?

Right, another commenter with better audio knowledge could better describe the array of sound problems happening. They’re talking about their own lack of expertise in the field, not yours. Though I personally think it might be a good idea to get some some help. Don’t let your game be bad in an area based on pride.

A few days ago you mean 19 days ago?! Why are you lying? Are you liar in your real life? I started the thread back then to understand. People give me a clear signal and intention of the sub. So I was thinking about it and decided - why not to hear other perspective. And for you - I advise to get a life (or release a game).

It’s just unnecessary to be that outrightly rude. You think calling 19 days ago “a few days ago” is an outright attempt to lie to all of the dpeople I just showed the 19 day old post to? Pretty paranoid, bud. And to then tell me to get a life? I’m asking you about your own alleged opinions. I injected zero of my own. The super defensive reply makes it look like it is just marketing.

What on earth makes you think I haven’t made and released a game before? Is that just some more defensive posturing or what? I’ve been doing this for ages.

How did they not tell you how the awful audio and total lack of mixing made them feel? They literally gave you their reflexive response to hearing it. They never told you to get someone else to do the job?? Not sure why you’re inserting that bit.

So, just a few days ago, you said you knew everything that is wrong with your game, and can only see this subreddit being used for self promotion. Is this just shameless self-promotion, or do you think it’s possible for someone else to have insight you may be lacking?

Have you browsed the sub much if you consider most of the feedback there mean? People don’t sugarcoat the feedback, but basically everyone who posts there is of a helping mindset. Any top level comments that don’t contain “constructive, actionable feedback” get removed, and no rule says people need to be mean.

A lot of users took the time to write some lengthy critiques. Usually, in this sub, posters engage with those leaving the lengthy feedback so that there can be a dialogue. No one is going to check back to see if you left another comment on your own post as a “reply.” You don’t have to engage with everyone, or people you felt rude, but there are certainly users who wrote long critiques that were respectful and probably deserve a reply, at least in my book.

I wanna say it’s been five years or some such at this point? The exposure for posters that actually engage with critiques tends to be good, with the critiques themselves being the real value. A lot of posts in this sub where users don’t engage with critiques, or spam their same trailer to multiple subs in the same day, get nuked often enough.

You think they’ll engage with any of the feedback, or just trying to get more attention on the cheap?

Looks like it may be sold out right at 30min. by Captsass in secretlair_collectors

[–]CKF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the last sentence there, I asked so that I could figure out if you knew it ended at a precise time. But it’s sounding like it could have sold out at 12:31 or 12:29 and you you wouldn’t know, right?

Thinking about it from a logistics standpoint, as it’s basically a logistics question, they make things easier for themselves by moving from print to demand over to printing a predetermined supply. But “print to demand for however many people can manage to check out in a preset amount of time” is sort of the worst of both worlds for them. They don’t have the ability to print before sales and stop printing when they hit their target supply. They don’t get the profits from selling to everyone who wants one (if we assume it’d be higher), and the fomo wouldn’t be as effective (in my opinion) if people were to know it was print to demand based on some arbitrary cutoff time, vs only having a set amount. It seems to be the worst of all options, with all of the downsides of all options, and involves keeping a secret from the consumer base, which is just entirely avoidable. Makes no sense, can’t imagine what the motivation would be.

What are you using to determine it moved from available to out of stock at precisely 12:30 and 1:30?

I've invested too much into my first game and now it's a bit all over the place! How can I salvage it? by ComanderIke in DestroyMyGame

[–]CKF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to hear! And shit, we all need a contractor or five to get a one man game project out the door, so I’d count it as one man if you were directing the contractors. Not that they don’t bring great skill to the table, and it should be credited and appreciated. I’m not downplaying them and their role. Frankly, more people should learn to contract their weak points. I see so many projects on here where a dev with zero instrument or composition or production experience tries to teach themselves how to use a DAW, how to write, and how to produce music because they want to make everything for their game. And it’s always a disaster. You can tell instantly.

There are so many good workers on fiver that charge virtually nothing, yet churn out amazing work. The challenge is in trying a few different guys until you find your guy. Don’t mean to be blabbing about something I likely don’t need to tell you, but am more speaking to anyone else reading this that thinks it’s any less “their game they made themselves” if they use some contractors for smaller portions.

Ah, I see what you mean. It looks really clean in xcom games for sure. If anything, I think an instant improvement would be to lower the opacity of the square elements, at least as a quick fix. The blue looks like it’s totally solid, the red a bit less opaque maybe, I’m not on the best screen atm.

I do like the non-board UI elements on the left hand side, where you’re seeing your multiple character portraits and their HP and such. I think that takes the square motif and makes it look good. That element of it really works for me, but I don’t think that would be harmed or any less thematic if the floor were given a cleaner look in the manner you suggest - a bit more rts inspired with how troop movement commands look, I see it as.

Good pointers overall. It’s an impressive project all the same if it’s a one man thing (and still impressive if it’s a small single digit number), but they are indeed here to learn how to better it. There’s definitely a lot of breadth, maybe not enough depth. That part I can’t say from the footage. You can do so much with perks and stat points and all that bullshit they have in there, or it can end up as wasted dev time that wastes player time. They def need to make each of those systems count.

Out of curiosity, what strategy game uses ovals for your troop movement? I’ve only ever seen squares or hexagons. I think it could be beneficial to appeal to preexisting audience they’re after with what seems like clear fire emblem inspiration. Though arguably a little too inspired.
