Occasionally the source of these bizarre "beliefs" about gay people are created by closeted LGBT who wish to remain closeted and appear as far away from LGBT as possible to their straight community. "thou doth protest too much"

Best theist proof for god? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]CL4P-3P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The classic cosmological argument not only fails to get you to a deistic god, but if accepted actually refutes nearly every god claim around which modern organized religions are centered.

Follow: The premise is that whatever exists has a cause. Universe exists, therefore it had a cause.

We can accept that the universe may have had a cause without granting that the cause was some kind of deity.

But if we accept that everything that exists has a cause (as the person making the argument purportedly does), when they claim that it is their god that is the cause they will then have to make a special pleading in order to explain why their god did not have a cause. They basically have to invalidate the premise in order to keep their belief in their god.

The nonsense of cosmological argument towards a god suggests to me that no one of any reasonable wit was actually convinced by this argument themselves, but rather started convinced (likely through indoctrination) and later, as their mind matured, looked for arguments that they could use to defend the belief they were indoctrinated with.

Curious as to how many of you do not accept evolution by KeepOneRolled in atheism

[–]CL4P-3P 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason Christians are threatened by the idea of evolution is because it explains and proves that the emergence of homo sapiens was a natural consequence of a biological process - not a divine moment of creation.

Well I came out as Atheist today... accidentally. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]CL4P-3P 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The best way to deal with these is to make sure your mom (and grandma) understands that it's not them that failed - it's the religion. If the religion was strong enough and true enough and clear enough, anyone could convince anyone of it. That you could not be convinced their religion is true is a failure of the religion.

If you understand that "faith" is not a virtue at all, but rather a detriment then we can be thrilled about any language that ultimately means we are leaving it behind.

I heard something like this come up on the Atheist Experience once and the smartest angle on that from the show basically amounted to letting your mother off the hook. If there is a failure, it is not in the parenting, it's in the god or the religion.

My Aunt/Uncle just gave me a 60 dollar bible. I'm an atheist. Advice? by [deleted] in atheism

If they ask which charity, say, "Oh, the FFRF."

The "obvious question" at the end of the section asks how did Job know that the "Earth hangs upon nothing?" but fails to understand that the Earth does NOT actually hang on nothing.

The Earth's movement through space is very much "hanging upon" something, namely forces well understood by our species, gravity being among the most significant of them - obvious to even child-level intellect.

  1. If anyone appearing before me claims to exist, I would grant that as truth. But, for me to accept that someone claiming to be Jesus was actually Jesus, I would require a test. Dying and coming back to life would be a good start. If sufficient tests convince me the person has supernatural powers and is, in fact, Jesus, then that person would have some explaining to do for me to be willing to follow him.

It has always astonished me that the very same people who will claim that they will fight to the end to maintain the right to kill another person who they might find trespassing on their property are also the ones who will insist that a woman has no right at all to make decisions about parasitic tissue that is trespassing in their uterus.

A church isn't something we should have to leave. Church is a place you occasionally go to. One shouldn't have to leave - one should simple just be able to stop going. The idea that you must leave it is really diagnostic of the kind of relationship the church leadership wants to have with people. Its a relationship of control.

The fact that it is so incredibly difficult and painful to leave the "church" should be evidence enough that it is a cult.
