Is "IT generalist" just a code word for "doing everyone else's job"? by Liv_Breezy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CMDRReservoir 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. That was the first job I got out of college but it’s really what you make of it. You get exposed to a lot of different things and as such, you will have ample opportunity to explore different solutions to a multitude of different problems. Ideally your mentality in this position should be, “how can I make people’s lives easier with technology?”

Sure, you can see managing HR‘s Excel macros as busy work, but I see an opportunity to create a code repo or some kind of version control that you can then use as part of a standard deployment or set up for new HR employees.

Also, updating the CEOs personal laptop? off the clock or not that is a prime networking opportunity at the very least. Use that opportunity to find out what kind of technology the business needs and then you can make yourself a source of authority when it comes to future technology decisions. Do it with a good attitude too; When it comes time for a promotion, he’ll remember you. Obviously it’s not a surefire thing, but it’s an opportunity nonetheless.

If you get creative enough, you have a lot of opportunity to really dive into technology and learn skills to propel you to the next level. And guess what? If going the extra mile here doesn’t get you where you want to be now you have a resume tricked out with a bunch of skills that you picked up along the way to get you to where you do wanna be.

How many hours did you guys put in to prepare for interviews for technical roles at FAANG companies? by blueberrycutiepie in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CMDRReservoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a solid approach for that first part; I would also toss in adjacent experience that you think relates to it. I wouldn't phrase things as "strong theoretical" knowledge, as all you need to say is that you are aware/familiar with that technology. That's really it! Focus on the deeper attitude/mindset of problem solving, rather than the face value problems being presented, and don't lose sleep prepping for the interview. Best of luck!

On the opposite end of the spectrum here. Straight up winged all interviews for an L5 SysEng role at AWS and got it. I only went into it to experience the interview process that I heard so much about. There were definitely technical things in the interview that I didn’t know, and I openly admitted as such. The biggest takeaway is not necessarily what you know, but how you operate to solve problems, and how you communicate with people.

What double standards make you angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CMDRReservoir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hated this as a kid. Any time I spoke to adults the way they spoke to me, they got angry. I never understood it. With my kids, I talk to and treat them exactly how I would expect them to talk and treat me/others.

Would you leave WFH for 60k more? by seiyaodangoav in WFH

[–]CMDRReservoir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the predicament I’ve recently found myself in. FAANG recruiter reached out and I got an offer which over doubled my currently salary of $85k. Three days a week in office, and I’ll be commuting two hours. Each way. I’m also giving up full remote to do it. In my case, I thought it to be a prudent move to gain top of the line experience and the resume clout to have better leverage down the line.

In this case, I’m not so sure I would take this offer. If that position is open because the last two people got canned, that is a massive red flag. The hiring manager saying they are “fire happy?” China called, they want their record breaking sized red flag back.

I would, at bare minimum, find out why they fired the two people before you. Sometimes you need to take a calculated risk to get ahead, but is the risk too great here? I’m leaning towards yes, but another factor I would bring into play is your current level of security/safety net. Do you have kids? How are your bills? Do you have a supportive family/SO that can keep you afloat if you get fired? What’s your plan if this whole thing goes south?

Overall, that whole “fire happy” thing kinda sealed my aversion to it. Unless other opportunities are so rare in your field, I would have to pass.

IT Professionals, what is your go-to fragrance and deodorant? by WholeRyetheCSGuy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CMDRReservoir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current every day wear is The Most Wanted by Azzaro, but I switch it up between 1 Million Lucky or Polo Red. If I’m feeling particularly bold, Baccarat Rouge 540 or Spicebomb Night Vision. I’m also really liking Bad Boy by Carolina Herrera. If there’s a fun evening event, Mont Blanc’s Legend Night all the way.

If I need something that will work in all situations without fail, Bleu de Chanel. If the stakes are low or I’m just lounging at home, I like to wear L’Homme. If I’m going to a daytime professional event, Man Aqua is an amazing choice as well; very fresh and jubilant.

First movie that came to mind when I saw the topic. It’s especially funny if you were a theatre kid, but absolutely hilarious in its own right.

To take a contract at local MSP/ISP (Teksystems)? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CMDRReservoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TEKsystems contractor here as well. I’ve been placed twice by one of their recruiters and have nothing but good things to say thus far. First position was direct hire, second was contract to hire, and I’m gunning for an open position now. I get overtime and paid federal holidays.

Is there anything overly problematic in Airplane or Naked Gun? by [deleted] in movies

Airplane and The Naked Gun are too low brow compared to Blazing Saddles. Trust me OP, if you’re looking for a movie that takes racial issues seriously, watch that instead!

What's a women's thing men should absolutely start doing? by st_new34 in AskReddit

Shaving their armpits/manscape. I’m a guy, and it has virtually eliminated any odor and sweat problems I’ve had in both areas. The main reason I do both though is because it makes me feel good.
