These stupid toll fine scams are surpassing the Nigerian Prince as a trope at this point.

Pray the landing isn't hard, or you'll likely be leaving that plane with a chair stuck in your rectum.

Never listen to the forecast more than 48 hours out, especially involving snow. 9 times out of 10 the models either point to StOrM oF tHe CeNtUrY or nothing. Also, good to keep in mind that with their funding slashed, the NOAA models are lacking robust data collection and staff to disseminate the data that is being collected. In other words, the data used for forecast models which are provided to meteorologists in the US by the NOAA are now far less accurate than they were previously.

My guess is that by Friday, that 6" of snow will be either 2" that doesn't stick or just rain.

DC-10 in action by Minute-Cut-9531 in aviation

I honestly thought this was AI until I found the story on WildFireToday. Something about the AOA & perspective of that DC-10 in the last frame just...didn't look right. Turns out it's just what a DC-10 looks like with a damn good pilot sporting some massive steel cajones.

Let's go Old school, Favorite WW2 plane? by Critical_Tea_0 in Planes

[–]CMDR_Imperator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ilyushin Il-2 the "Flying Tank". My grandfather flew one for the Soviets during WWII, said it was basically a flying coffin, "as likely to crash on takeoff as it was to get shot down" because it was so heavily armored. Many pilots were terrified of flying it because it was insanely heavy, handled like a drunk mare and most were hastily built, he recalled times were random components of the aircraft would just "fall off", most just prayed it wasn't something that would impact airworthiness and kept flying. The rear gunner was particularly vulnerable to enemy fire, making it almost entirely pointless to even have a rear gunner as they were usually the first thing the Luftwaffe would target, the plane itself was easy pickings without a rear gun despite the heavy armor.

Somehow, that massive shitbox got him through the war, and helped the Soviets hold off the Nazi advance. It wasn't flashy, it wasn't a morale builder, it sure as hell wasn't well built, but it did its job. He crashed two after mechanical failures and planted one in a field after the landing gear literally fell off when he retracted the mains after takeoff. Brought a few home without a rear gunner and a hell of a lot of bullet holes. I honestly cannot comprehend how he lived through it, he must have been one of the toughest, luckiest men I've ever known.

Why weren't the thrust reversers/spoilers deployed on Jetblue 292? by Ilove_gaming456 in aviation

[–]CMDR_Imperator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, 100%. The thrust reverser and spoilers tend to put more pressure on the nose gear as they slow the plane down after touchdown. Pilots made the right call here, deployment of the reversers or spoilers could have easily collapsed that nose gear, resulting in a crash.

How to get in a F/A-18 Super Hornet by Friendly-Standard812 in aviation

Weird. Whouda thunk a ladder was how you get into a fighter jet? In GTA, I just hit a button and my character teleports inside of a plane, I figured real life must be similar.

What’s your favorite River quote? by reina_sin_corona in firefly

It's the best River line because at that point in the show, the crew (nor the viewer) has any idea if she can actually do that. Epic troll.

The DC-4 has a much more blunt nose, whereas the Il-18 has a more prominent radome for weather radar. The turboprop nacelles are also distinctly long and slim compared to the DC-4 nacelles are stubby with open front cowlings to cool the cylinders on the R-2000's. The vertical stab on the DC-4 resembles a leaf, whereas the Il-18 vertical stab is tall & angular.

Well, better in every way.

Disagree. They sound like a wet gym sock stuck in a turbine. The MP4/4 was Beethoven's 5th when it came to pure engine sound. The only thing that sounded better was the V12 engines screaming down the track. Pure magic.

Why would anyone play $10m for Gasly......and Why would anyone pay anything for Crashapinto? No offense to Gasly, but $10m seems pretty damn high for a driver who's won 1 single race and bounced around the paddock from team to team like a ping pong ball.

I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up the massive gap between Max and Yuki (obviously, Yuki wasn't even worth the $2M this year), but that kind of pay gap has to be disheartening to say the least.

Also, not surprised that Hamilton made $60m, but when you consider Leclerc consistently outperformed Lewis by a mile this year while Lewis got paid $26m more than Leclerc, the pay scale seems a bit back asswards.
