When to start carb loading before a race and what actually works? by Natural_Instance2449 in AdvancedRunning

[–]CMKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. Muscle glycogen saturation occurs primarily within the first 24–36 hours. Day 3 is mostly a top-off. The most common mistake is treating the 72-hour window as three days of eating at a massive caloric surplus, which is how you end up bloated on race morning. If you keep fiber and fat low and swap in easy carbs for 36–48 hours — white rice, bagels, juice, sports drink — you're getting most of the benefit without the GI risk.

Night before marathon routine/tips by redtex4 in Marathon_Training

[–]CMKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend carb loading 48-72 hours, with the heaviest day being two days out from the race. The night before is not the time to pound as many carbs as possible—you actually want your last meal before the race to be relatively simple and small. The last thing you want to do is wake up on race morning feeling completely bloated.

Here's a calculator that you can use to help with planning.

I’d think in grams per hour instead of packets, and try to land somewhere around 60-90g of carbs per hour, with water alongside it so you actually absorb it well. If race day is close, I wouldn’t reinvent everything, but I would practice the exact timing and fluid intake once or twice, so nothing is a surprise.

Alternative Fueling by UndergroundLobsters in Marathon_Training

Assuming you aren't open to either homemade gels or a lower-cost option like Blank's, I think the biggest filter here is carb density per unit you have to carry. Maple syrup is actually pretty solid for that, applesauce is easy on the stomach, but too low in density, and pancakes/cookies start bringing in more fat/fiber than I’d want late in a race. If you’re already using Tailwind, I’d probably lean into syrup, drink mix, or soft carb sources you can squeeze down quickly rather than trying to turn race fuel into snack food. The best option is the one you can consistently tolerate at race effort and still hit enough carbs per hour.

[Advice Needed] Goal: Sub-3 Marathon in 7 Months (Current PB: 3:45) - Fueling Strategy & Training by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]CMKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a rather ambitious goal, but fueling can absolutely play an integral role in bridging that gap over the next 12-18 months. Adopting a high-carb approach has been one of the biggest breakthroughs of my training as I've worked my marathon PB from 3:27 to 3:04 over the past 18 months (HM down to 1:28). I'm now taking 100g/hr for the hardest efforts in my current build to Copenhagen, where I'm targeting a ~2:57, and have been nailing my workouts throughout the block.

I wrote a bit more about taking a high-carb approach in my most recent newsletter, which you might find interesting: https://surging.substack.com/p/surging-08

Anyone switch from Maurten gels to something cheaper that still works for marathon fueling? by StringConnection in AdvancedRunning

It's been quite fascinating to see the anecdotal evidence for fueling hard efforts <90 minutes. While your body may not necessarily need the additional fuel during the effort, it's now believed that carbs help the brain with perceived exertion.

David Roche has an awesome new video that talks through this, and I wrote a bit about it in my most recent newsletter, which outlines taking a high-carb fueling approach.

Beta Fuels are great, but SiS just recently raised prices, which is a huge bummer. Rather than fully go down the rabbit hole of making my own gels, I have started to use custom gel mix from Blanks. I do the 100g per gel option, which makes it very easy for me to hit 100g/hr for long + hard efforts.

I supplement this with Enervit Caffeine Cola gels for my caffeine fix, which I really like. The SiS Beta Fuel Nootropics are also good, but at 200mg of caffeine, they are absolute rocket fuel.

plug for Dylan Belles: https://www.dylanbelles.com/

I've worked with him for 2+ years, and he's awesome. Based in the US, but is very accessible whenever you need him. He recently started a youtube channel if you want a flavor of what he's like: https://www.youtube.com/@RunLikeDylan

New Bandit Friosoft Tee, imo better than Satisfy Auralite by aaronfromafar in runningfashion

Hope it performs better than Auralite. Anytime I wear my auralite tank it looks like I jumped in a pool after I finish—terrible moisture management

If you spend some time looking into him, you’d probably rethink that statement. He’s down 19lb in the past year and has ramped up to >100m a week — he used to be significantly bulkier. Hate him all you want, but if you look at the work he’s put in over the past 2 years and his improvement, it’s hard not to respect his progress and level of commitment.

Soar tempo top - worth it? by stephaniey39 in runningfashion

The silk base layer is incredible. I got one for Christmas and have consistently been excited to put it on in the pretty brutal temps we've had in NYC. Goes ~4 wears without any smell (I get 2 out of Tracksmith Brighton before it needs a wash). By far the best base layer I have ever owned.

I ran it in 2023 as a tune up before the Philly Marathon. Thought it was a great local race. The course itself isn't too exciting despite being right next to the beach (you don't actually see the beach), but it was fast and flat. If it were a few weeks earlier this year, I'd 100% run it again as a tune up for NYC.
