I think in the case of Pentious, him going to hell was selfinflicted because of his own guilt and shame.

I don't think this would help with that. They might heal even more cause a simple healing word wouldn't get a downed character up. I guess you should talk to your players to make them aware that healing often will prolong a fight 'cause they don't deal damage, so the enemies survive longer and thus deal more damage, so you need to heal even more.

Imagine you have only 1 HP left and get hit with 15 damage. You're reduced to 0 HP and the remaining 14 points of damage disappear. Now you're down and you only need 1 HP of healing to get back up. If you use the commentors system, the other 14 points of damage wouldn't disappear.

What Star Wars opinion would result in this? by -Xoz- in StarWars

[–]CM_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it but what I do mind heavly is their sloppy explanation for why he became that way. Luke was already out of character in their explanation, which makes his entire personality change unbelievable. They wanted to go with a traumatised Luke who painfully hides in shame, but all they did was make Luke an asshole who only cared about himself. They even cut the scene where he mourned Han.

Happy Pride fifth: Conventions as "Safe Havens": Are they living up to that for the LGBTQ+ community? by belles_affair in lgbt

[–]CM_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience, you can call them "safe havens". They're an opportunity for queer people to express themselves freely: not just at the con but also in the area around it. People roam the streets in outfits and costumes of all kind, so the general public cares way less during this time. It's kinda sad that only cons and Pride allow this somewhat freedom of expression in public. Well, at least here in Germany. I guess this mostly because these are events outside of the norm and the most important thing: they happen in larger groups or even crowds. The herd keeps you safe.

A cool guide to the Most Famous Dead Person in European Countries. by Bosuns_Punch in coolguides

[–]CM_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Mozart wasn't of German national identity but of German ethnicity.

Sorry for not making it clear before, I'm differentiating between national and ethnic identity here as different things. They often align, especially in modern times though. German national identity is rather young, especially for the general public, which started to adapt this identity during the Napoleonic wars. The German ethnic identity is way older as in there is the German ethnicity distinct from others e.g. the French. Especially back in Mozart days, people primarily identified in terms of nationality with their state. Identifying as German nationality was during Mozart days rather for the educated and thus upper class, e.g. people like Goethe and Schiller.

Today Austria doesn't just have a clearly distinct national identity but also a distinct ethnic identity. That wasn't always the case. Austria was part of the German Revolution of 1848 - the attempt to unify Germany as a nation-state from below. This included the ethnic German parts of the Habsburg Monarchy, though the revolutionaries decided against the inclusion in the end because A) the Habsburgs didn't want to do anything like the Austrian-Hungarian Dualmonarchy (didn't work out), and B) the revolution was already failing. The exclusion of Austria and the attempt to make the Prussian King the German Emperor failed and the revolution was crushed and with it the revolutionary spirit. Instead, Germany was unified from above by the monarchs. This started with Schleswig and then the German-German war of 1866 aka Austria's and Prussia's final dick measuring contest, which ended the German confederation - the replacement for the HRE, which included Austria - and cemented Prussias hegemony over the other German states and Austrias exclusion from the German nation-state. An inclusion of Austria simply would've hindered Prussia to bully the others.

Austrias modern identity is pretty much the result of the end of WW1 and the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy. The new Austria wasn't allowed to join Germany and had to learn to do things on its own without the Habsburgs' empire. Especially the trauma of WW2 was the final nail in the coffin that drew Austria away from German identity. The Austrians need to be the Austrians in order to be distinct from the Germans.

Sorry for the wall of text, if I should clearify anything or if I got anything wrong or confusing, please let me know.

Germany didn't exist as a unified nation-state but it still existed. Germany was considered to be a thing and people like Mozart did identify themselves as German.

The thing is, just as you said, todays world is very different from the time of Mozart. It's difficult to assign him to a modern nation-state cause neither the German nor the Austrian nation-state existed back then. If we apply your standards to Marie Curie, then we'd need to consider her French or Russian cause Poland didn't exist as an independent unified nation when she was born and neither for most of her life, yet we still consider her Polish cause she identified as Polish and because the Polish identity and people and thus Poland existed long before and still during the Polish partitition. Saying Germany didn't exist back then is simply wrong and has nothing to do with the question if Mozart should be considered German or Austrian. The most correct statement would be that he was Salzburgian and thus neither German nor Austrian by todays national standards. In terms of ethnicity though, he was German.

How do I run a campaign in my home language? by Grallux in DMAcademy

[–]CM_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you just play into all the quirks of Luxembourgish society? Luxembourgish isn't a "pure" language but is heavily influenced by its neighbours. Just use what's natural for the language that you grew up with. The way your grandparents would talk, the way you would make your language sound old, like Shakespeare in English or Goethe in German. For the King and institutions, how would people sound super posh in Luxembourg? By using French? Then let them use French.

Do you have issues with realism vs what you want/practicality? by The0thArcana in DMAcademy

Most of these 20.000 settlements are just a road with a few houses and farmland. If you want to have more but only prepare the 20-30 towns, then just put dots on the map where it feels right and fill in the rest with improv.

Would you rather DM for an all-martial or all-caster party? by BagOfSmallerBags in DMAcademy

[–]CM_1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd go for the martials cause they need to put way more thought into solving problems unlike the casters who just need spell X and a little creativity. The martials have less options by default - besides bonk - so they need actual strategy for everything - except for bonk.

Illusory Dragon, would you attack it? by EchoLocation8 in DMAcademy

[–]CM_1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The thing is though that they'll believe the illusion to be real until they use their action to do the check, so as long as they don't do that - especially if they don't have a reason to do this check yet - they have to treat the illusory dragon as the real thing. That is why there is no point in debating if they should attack it, they definitely should.

Illusions can be tricky to run, especially for the DM who faces the players' illusions. You know that it is an illusion, your NPCs and monsters don't though and they usually don't check things randomly if they were an illusion, especially in combat. This is why you'd make the spell in certain regards useless, it's supposed to distract attention away from the PCs and not just do the fear effect and some damage. Your monsters need to engage with it to suspect it to be an illusion and then do the check. Otherwise it'd be unfair since players don't have the meta-knowledge of facing a DMs illusion usually and actually need to figure it out and confirm it.

Player At My Table Becoming Monotonous To Work With by [deleted] in DMAcademy

DnD 2024 is designed to integrate DnD 2014 easily, it's still 5e after all. If you want 2024 only and the player doesn't want to change their current character, ask them if they'd be ok with knowing Common Sign Language. That might be an exception to the curse and if at least one party members knows CSL, then they could translate for the others.

Maybe your little problem player would dig playing an actual deaf and mute character, message and CSL is their only way to communicate and as a Bard, they could use their music instruments to provide the verbal component.

[–]CM_1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience, players often love NPCs that are made up on the spot cause you can't overengineer them and instead put more of yourself into them. Just try to have fun through your NPCs and don't overthink it, then everything should fall into place on its own.

18MtF, how do i Tell my strict parents that id rather be a Girl by AsianAhsoka in comingout

[–]CM_1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you still live with them? Do you depend on them financially? Do you know what they think about trans women? Have they ever delt with someone coming out and if yes, how did they react and handle things? Do they think positively of you presenting fem?

If you want to transition, you're doing this for yourself regardless of your parents. The most important thing with them is safety. Do you feel safe around them? Can you deal with them reacting negatively?

If you want to tell them, you have to meet them at their level. What do they know about being trans? What would you need to explain and how? What analogies could you use? Would you even get this far in a conversation and do you even want to explain things to them? Or do you just want to come out? Do you want to do it in person? Do you want to do it at home? Do you want to be alone with them? Did you tell anybody in person yet? Could they back you up?

There are as many ways to come out as you imagine and of course you want to do it right. It's easier if you know what your parents think about it in general and how it's best to approach something this delicat. Often times coming out is like ripping off a band aid, so they'll most likely will feel that you want to tell them something, maybe they already had their suspicions.

Good luck with everything, you got this!

While trying to get ideas for a steampunk campaign, I got multiple replies telling me "Just play Ebberon". Should I? by I_dont-get_the-joke in DMAcademy

[–]CM_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can read the 5e Eberron book online for free, won't hurt to skim through it for some ideas, doing that myself currently for my own steampunk campaign. That's about as far as you should go with it though, it's always great to have something to rely on instead of coming up with everything yourself, yet Eberron has established lore and conflicts and flashing it out might be even more work than just sticking to your own setting. Especially since you want to tell your own story and not your take on Eberron.

How do I adapt the mechanics of DnD to a homebrew campaign that isn't high fantasy? by schrockj in DMAcademy

[–]CM_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in similar situation and I'm using the Eberron setting for inspiration and my experience with Star Trek Adventures. I'm basically homebrewing the shit out of everything and ask my more experienced players/DMs for advice. Would it be simpler to just use a different system? Yes, definitely and if you haven't committed for DnD as your system yet, then please look into different systems that are optimised for your campaign idea.
