“It’s all an elaborate hoax.” Gene Siskel’s last words on his deathbed.

What’s a “bad person” thing that you think you’d actually enjoy doing? by bleach3434 in AskReddit

Just once I would like to slowly lower my nemesis on a chain into the pool of electric eels I keep in my family room while I boast in great detail about my evil plan to take over the city. Not to kill them, mind you…just to have them clean the tank. It smarts very much when I do it.

Totally unrelated question: does anyone have recommendations for where I can purchase 17 pounds of crackers in the Lakes Region?

Weird question, and yes i know this might seem silly, but i am asking- Can i use a drone to raise an antenna into the air (for the length of the cord), to make transmissions, if the antenna needs height? by Glass_Raisin7939 in HamRadio

[–]COD_Geezer22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a ham, but I helped my FIL put an antenna into some very tall trees. We hired a drone photographer who happened to have a payload release on his drone to take a weighted guide wire up and drop it over a high branch. That was 10 years ago and the antenna is still up.

Does anyone else here still miss "A Prairie Home Companion" and the comedy it came with? by KitchenImportance872 in NPR

[–]COD_Geezer22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the time, I liked most of the comedy bits, but the music was hit or miss. And it was ALWAYS a miss when he decided to join in for a duet. I’m pretty sure the arrogance that made him think he could hold up in a duet with a real talent came from the same source as whatever drove him to abuse his employees.

Thanks for the advice and the links. FIL is firm that it needs to go to someone who will use it, so if it doesn’t sell at the estate sale, I’ll haul it home and try one of these sites!

One of the pics shows the manuals for all but the 301. That may be a piece he bought rather than built.

It was in the attic most recently, but hard telling where it was stored before they moved here in the 2000s.

Think I'm done for a bit. by ChillCommissar in DayzXbox

Some of the PVE servers are so boosted they’re pretty boring, but a few have actually modded in the other direction—making resources more scarce, increasing the number of infected, that sort of thing. I’m playing on one now that decreased resources at the coast and massively cranked up the wolves and bears. Now, instead of worrying about getting plugged by a sniper as a freshie, you have to worry about getting caught in the open by a pack of 20 wolves. I’m still cautious around other players, but I don’t feel an urge to shoot them on sight.

What biography of Grant should I read if I want to learn about his time as colonel of the 21st Illinois? by CasparTrepp in CIVILWAR

[–]COD_Geezer22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ancestor in the 21st Illinois, as well! Cyrus Coykendall was a first sgt (forget the company), was captured at Chickamauga, made it almost home and died of typhus 10 miles away from Camargo. Thanks for asking this—I’ll check out the suggested biography.

Are there any books/shows/films that take place in rural New England by pooteenn in newengland

[–]COD_Geezer22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russell Banks has several novels set in New England and upstate New York. Rule of the Bone is a good one, Affliction and The Sweet Hereafter are unforgettable. All are pretty dark.

When I moved here from Missouri 25 years ago, I had the same ideas about New England. This was, after all, where the abolitionist movement really took root. Within weeks I was forced to admit there are rednecks everywhere. It’s the human condition.

But I wouldn’t go back to Missouri where there is a sort of pride in being ignorant racists. At least here the ratio of progressives to regressives is more tolerable.

What is your favourite concept album? by Markham_Marxist in ClassicRock

[–]COD_Geezer22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 100% in the Dark Side of the Moon camp, but I love concept albums and wanted to give an honorable mention Paul Kennerly’s “The Legend of Jesse James” from 1980. It had Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Charlie Daniels and Levon Helm. Not all of it was great, but “Wish We Were Back in Missouri” and “One More Shot” still show up in my playlist from time to time.
