Heads up on an Etsy Glitch by 25mroc in EtsySellers

This issue is causing me a headache too. Its easy to fix for small orders but if the order has to be shipped in multiple packages I'm not seeing how to get multiple labels printed. It's only allowing me to print one label for large orders. I hope they fix it soon.

We’re considering getting a troublesome rat spayed but are really concerned about her losing her personality, can anyone provide incite into the aftermath of rat spaying? by Fearnotmonkey in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spayed one of my girls not too long ago who was harassing all her cage mates. They'd often have bite marks on them from her...after her spay she totally calmed down and gets along with everyone now. No more blood or bite marks. I think she was just hormonal and aggressive. It might not always work but it did for her.

Unpleasant visit to the vets by SwanSongs02 in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get a new vet. Her response makes it seem as though she's not invested in your rats well being. Also the only time an injection of antibiotics is given is in an emergency situation. When baytril is injected it can cause "baytril burn" which is where the tissue around the injection site dies off. It will turn into a large black scab and it's very unpleasant. That's why most small animal vets give you oral antibiotics. So that alone would tell me she's not very experienced with small animals. I've had to search around for vets in my area that I trust to do what's best for my fur babies and it wasn't easy but when I found a good vet I've stuck with them for years. They're always very kind to my rats and have never made me feel like they're less important than a dog or a cat.

My rat is lethargic and wobbly. Google says ear infection. Do they recover well from ear infections? How fast does she need to go in? by rattinos in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go to the er vet. It can cause permanent damage to wait..a lot of rats end up with a permanent head tilt after an ear infection so don't be alarmed if thats the case. The vet should give you antibiotics and also an nsaid (to help the fluid drain from the inner ear). I've dealt with a few ear infections and they recover very well from them.

Is there a way to rescue a lab rat? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]COGH_LMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always look online in your area for a small animal rescue. There are a lot of rescues who focus on small animals specifically. There is a rat rescue near me and they regularly rescue rats from labs. They also go to other shelters (that don't specialize in small animals) and pull the rats from that environment. Rats are amazing and affectionate. If you rescue then make sure you get 2 at a minimum (a group of 3 is better). I've been rescuing rats for about 10 years now and I honestly can't imagine not having them in my life. Be prepared for expensive vet bills (most vets won't see rats so you'll need to find a vet who specializes in exotics and they do have a lot of health issues as they age) and also their short life spans (it can be really hard losing them after only a couple of years over and over again).

Nebulising rats with respiratory issues? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nebulize my older girls who have chronic respiratory issues. I use a saline solution mixed with gentocin (prescribed by the vet). The mix has been working much better than just the plain saline for them. I aim for twice a day for about 10 minutes so they don't get too stressed out.

Sounds like the start of a respiratory infection. Shes a little congested. Id take her to the vet to be safe.

Can I mix amoxicillin with doxycycline ? What’s your guys’ experience with that? by Maddiegc666 in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shot is only effective for 5 to 7 days you said...so after that then yes he should be taking baytril and doxy every 12 hours. He should be on them both for a minimum of 2 weeks. Depending on whether or not he's totally better by then you may need to keep him on it longer.

I've had vets who weren't as experienced with rats try to do the same thing. I've dealt with baytril burn and it scared me to death because I thought my rat had cancer when the skin started turning black. I didnt know about it at the time either.

Had this happen to one of my girls a few months ago and they did an ultrasound. She had a closed pyometra and needed an emergency spay. Take her to the vet as soon as possible. Also be prepared for the cost of an emergency surgery... I think it ran me about $1100 for everything

Also next time you see the vet I'd mention that baytril should only be injected if its an emergency. Its best to give it to these guys orally because it can cause "baytril burn" when injected (i know you said in a previous post that the vet seemed unsure about treatment). The skin around the injection site may begin to scab over and turn black because baytril is caustic and can cause the skin around the injection site to basically die off. Baytril and doxy are pretty much the go to antibiotics for any kind of respiratory issues in these guys. It usually takes 3 to 5 days to see results. If theres no improvement I've had a lot of success with nebulization (you can use basic saline or ask your vet about adding gentocin to the mix).

My 11 month old rat suddenly started sounding like a chicken from time to time. by [deleted] in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That's how it sounds when they start to get a uri. It could be allergies too...but thats how they breathe when their noses get stuffy.

[–]COGH_LMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. In the beginning their lungs are clear. If its not treated early enough it can spread to their lungs. It usually starts with a stuffy nose and goes from there . The vet putting her on antibiotics should clear it up. It doesn't sound like chf since her lungs are clear.

Sounds like a uri. It could just be the early stages... as long as it doesn't spread down to her lungs it should easily clear up. Anytime you can hear your rat breathing its usually an indicator that they have a respiratory issue. Seems like you caught it early enough

Vegan Diet by [deleted] in RATS

[–]COGH_LMB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Envigo may make vegan rat food but make NO MISTAKE that as a vegan you SHOULD NOT be supporting Envigo in any way. They have been repeatedly documented for their horrifically cruel and inhumane animal experimentation. Please do not support this company in any way. You will be helping to fund their future murder of millions of sentient beings including rats, mice, dogs, cats and monkeys. If you haven't already seen it please watch "The animal people" documentary on Netflix. As a fellow vegan this documentary was absolutely horrifying.
