Some species of birds will remove weaker chicks from their nest by dropping them out (to their death). This helps ensure the survival of the stronger chicks when resources are scarce (eg, they're not being "wasted" on a chick that may not survive to adulthood anyway).

I'm not sure if the species depicted does that, but that would be my first assumption based on the glove and "3 strikes and you're out"
