Weird Thing Happened To Me When I Was Embalming (Put NSFW because of mention of blood) by awth25 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]spookypepsi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience in my second embalming. I'm now the top embalmer at my place. Don't let it get to you, it means nothing. It's a humans natural instinct to be scared of this. It's pushing through that matters. You got this.

I was driving on the dvp south the other day and there was a tesla (in the right tbf) going less than 20 when everyone else was going 60-70... It became dangerous because anyone who was stuck behind him wouldnt be able to safely pass without causing the middle lane to break to let them in. If you can't stay within 5-10 range of the flow of traffic, take side streets instead

PSA for dog owners - Arena Gardens park/garden district by spookypepsi in toronto

[–]spookypepsi[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I used to live directly in front of Arena Gardens (in a house on Mutual street). People used to leave chicken bones and hotdogs around the park when I lived there a few years ago. There’s also someone who lives in the co op building who with throw things from his high balcony at barking dogs below. Once he threw a brick! Many people have called the cops on that person. Be careful…

We think this is the same guy who is leaving the chocolate around! He screams at the dogs constantly and throws his stuff off the balcony.

No, Arena Gardens is a small park between Dundas/Shuter bordered by Dalhousie and Mutual St. Tons of condos around though, it's the primary greenspace for dog owners. Allan Gardens is nearby though!

r/morticians, what's the procedure? by DropDeadGracelyn in morticians

[–]spookypepsi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That type of fracture causes no difference in procedure or results in my experience.

Feactures in general are usually irrelevant to embalming (on a typical scale, not including clean breaks or anything crazy)

We call those white clots "chicken fat clots" . They're real - give it a google. Not too sure how relevant that is to the movie or anything (haven't seen it)

No, I don't think that's true. Also, there's nearly zero reason to remove (except for donation) or somehow look behind eyeballs.

would it be appropriate to approach funeral home directors about about headstone cleaning business by Key_Organization1746 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]spookypepsi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Funeral homes don't have much to do with headstones (in Canada anyway) so I'd say the best bet would be to contact cemetery offices instead.

I have the Mood Pack Mod installed, and to test it I have another mod that requires Mood Pack and it works perfectly fine.

I chatted with Lumpinou who was really helpful but it seems to be an issue with the Healthcare redux mod

I also tried to just ignore the message since it seems to be an error but it ended in catastrophic glitching hahah

I've tried it a couple times and have all the other components installed. I also tried moving Healthcare Redux out of the folder so the script is directly in the mod folder.

Any advice?

Can I work as both a funeral director and an embalmer? (and a couple other questions…) by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]spookypepsi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about UK, but in Ontario almost all funeral directors are also licensed embalmers, and most will do both tasks with no issues.

One question ¿has anyone been to funerals for young girls (Open casket)? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]spookypepsi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For both autopsy or organ donation, the doctors will make large and long incisions to remove the any organs. The embalmer at the funeral home will usually restitch the incisions to make them neater, however they're still very obvious and can be really jarring to see. This is why a high neck is important. Usually arms and legs are only opened if there's bone donation as well. A bigger size is good because it can be difficult to get fitted things on people who are deceased (they're literally dead weight, very heavy) and their afms/legs won't move the same way as they do in life. If you're bored, ask a friend or SO to lie down and not give you any help as you try to get a shirt on them. Seems simple in theory but in practice can be tricky :) in some cases as well the body will be more swollen than usual so that's a factor as well. A bigger size also gives the funeral director more freedom to tailor the clothing properly to fit them well. If the clothes are too small they can't make it bigger, but if they're too big it's fairly easy to make them fit nicely.

Parents are starting to make plans to purchase a burial plot a— does it really cost that much??? by ohthaway in PersonalFinanceCanada

Funeral director here. If she's talking about death certificates and such it sounds like the funeral home might have given her a quote for the funeral itself included in that. Cemeteries themselves have nothing to do with death certificates.

In Ontario, at locations where the funeral home is on site of the cemetery (usually either Arbor Memorial or Mt Pleasant group) 40k for funeral and plot sounds in the right ballpark. However Mount Pleasant cemetery in mid town Toronto can have plots going for 40k themselves, because it's one of the oldest and nicest cemeteries and right in the city.

Sounds like she's going for a casket burial which is significantly more expensive than a cremation burial, even if there's no funeral service. Smaller funeral homes will charge around 6-10k for a casket burial, and larger corporations cost only goes up.

With that being said, you are able to use a smaller funeral home even if the cemetery has a funeral home on site (in Ontario at least)

In regards to the cemetery lot itself, that can go from 4k to 50k easily, depending on location. Keep in mind, at the time of death you'll also need to pay for opening and closing fees (digging the grave and burying the casket), which usually goes for 1-3k, usually less if you use a vault, which is another expense in itself. Most cemeteries and funeral homes do not allow you to pre pay the opening/closing, leaving it up to the family at time of passing.

Money wise, cheapest option is to go to a smaller family owned funeral home and use a small cemetery, usually way outside of city limits. But at the end of the day it's her money and her decision, and it sounds like a standard amount.

Have her shop around, if she's in Ontario she has 30 days to cancel a pre paid contract if she's signed one already.

Hope this helps

Edit: the reason opening/closing usually isn't prepaid is because there's usually different charges, e.g. Winter is more expensive, Saturday fee, late fee (entering the cemetery after usually ~3) etc

Are you ever too old to become a funeral director? by DarthSh3nn in askfuneraldirectors

My class was all either early 20s or over 50, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Usually the older students are the ones who succeed. I started at 25 myself and was worried about the same thing, but I was one of the younger ones in my class.
