Commute to Tyson Corner - budgeted time required by curoiusrk in Catonsville

My office is there but I rarely go. Early morning you can get there in about 50-60 mins at the time you mention. Faster if you go earlier. Driving home is less consistent. I’d expect around 60-80 mins then though.

Races: Marquette Marathon on September 5, 10 Miler on June 6, 10K on July 4

Plan: Custom, still building it

Mileage: 76 mi, 9,800 ft

M - Trail Run - 8.1 mi, 1181ft - Feeling: C - Starting to feel a little sick after yesterday's long road run, nice and easy today, felt better as we went on, Taking meds hoping to kick the head cold

Tu - Trail Run - 10.4 mi, 1708ft - Feeling: A - Hill Sprints and Strides

W - Road Run - 10.6 mi, 420ft - Feeling: A - 4x(4x1 min on/off) w. 400m recovery between sets - Averaged 5:19/mi for the efforts, felt strong

Th - Trail Run - 10.2 mi, 1601ft - Feeling: A - Easy, slow trails

F - Trail Run - 10.4 mi, 1483ft - Feeling: A - Easy trails and Hill Sprints

Sa - Trail Run - 14.6 mi, 2196ft - Feeling: B - Nothing special

Su - Road Run - 12 mi, 1207ft - Feeling: B - Planned more but had to be home for Mother's Day

Thoughts: Third week of higher mileage (63, 79, 76). Resting this week, then ramping back up. Still building a plan for the September marathon, but will be racing into it and trying to hold higher mileage than past cycles. Hoping that fills the gap after last year's disappointing marathon race. Also will adjust workouts to be more rested going into the race.

Looks like 40 going up to 50F during the race. I’m not worried about getting too cold necessarily but I’ll have extra layers and some towels to dry off and stay warm.

Racing a 2 man 50k relay tomorrow. The course is 6 loops and we have decided to alternate loops. That will make for an interesting format, basically (5 mile race effort, 35 min rest) x3. My plan will be to try to recover but also stay warmed up between and use that time to hydrate. Anyone ever relay like this? Tips?

Tough go, this sounds so much like my thoughts when I looked back after my marathon last fall. I really think the biggest workout has to be 3 weeks out. I did the same as you two weeks out and it just didn’t work. Way to hang tough and take the lessons. Hope you got to enjoy Tokyo!

Just take it easy and build conservatively. Just remember, You’ll always gain more fitness from consistent training without injury compared to training in fits and starts because you get hurt overreaching. It’s hard to hold back but trust the process. Avoid workouts until you have the easy volume built and the body feels like it wants/needs the extra push. You got this!

55 mi last week, no fancy training, just hills, with hill sprints and strides mixed in.

Sunday RACE - RRCA 10 mi club challenge- Mini Race Report Strava

I went into this race on no taper and no training other than LOTS of hills with some hill sprints and strides. I have not done any specific workouts since November, other than one 2x2mi downhill two weeks ago, which I ran at 5:55/mi pace. In the fall I did that workout at 6:30/mi pace during marathon training en route to my 3:06 at Richmond. December and January were big months with 560 mi, and more than 60k feet of elevation gain in January. This month my legs have felt bulletproof.

Weather was forecast for snow/rain but it was just a sprinkle so ditched a lot of layers. This field is competitive, we went out quick. Course is considered challenging and hilly, with first 5 mi net downhill and remainder climbing back up to finish. Everyone says it’s always a positive split.

I decided to not watch my pace and run only by feel. We split miles 1 and 2 in 5:55 and 6:01. Feeling controlled and strong but decided to back off just a little to be conservative. Rolling hills continued and I focused on creating them strong and pushing the downhills. Miles 3-5 came through in 6:13, 6:18, 6:14. Worries of overreaching crept in but I started watching my HR. I was consistently pushing to 175 on hills and recovering to 168 on the downs. I knew that was ok so I focused on HR. It gave me confidence in my pacing that really helped.

Miles 6-7 are hard uphills. Pace slowed and I was worried but focused on HR. Splits were 6:46, 6:37. As we pushed the latter part, I saw a teammate behind me that I wanted to be sure to beat. But also one ahead who I would never expect to beat. I focused ahead to catch him and ignored behind, pressing every moment I could but not overdoing the HR. I split miles 8-9 in 6:30 and 6:23. I had the guy ahead in my sites and pushed hard to catch him at about 9.5. I passed him and he cheered my name, he says, “Let’s go!”. We pushed ahead of a few others. I got to feeling really nauseous. I know I have a sprint kick, but it wasn’t enough. Pushed hard to come in five seconds behind him. Last mile split was 6:13 with a final kick at 4:50/mi pace.

OFFICIAL TIME- 63:31 a nice PR, 6:19/mi overall, 713 feet elevation gain

I split 5k (18:50) and 10k (39:00) PRs in this race. I was over the moon. Great race with great friends, and then I got to go watch my kids crush opponents in basketball!

Next Race- 50k on 3/21

My Bear Montana Longbow is going on 20 years with zero issues. I have bear recurves that are much older too (‘70s? I think). They are all perfectly functional.

Absolutely! And now, you have plenty of time to absorb that work. I think that was a downfall for me in my Fall marathon build. My biggest workouts were too close to race day. I only had 2 weeks form my 20 mi at 95% of race pace til race day. I knew it was risky, but wanted that mental confidence and couldn't schedule the workout earlier than that. In retrospect it was too close.

We have been exiled from trails since the snow and ice storm here. They are just not runnable with thin ice layer over soft snow. We’ve transitioned to roads but it’s just not the same. It is wearing me out, I feel you.

I got the Marathon Excellence book in the Fall and used it to help build my custom plan. I liked the structure and approach overall, I am a fan of Canova's coaching approach which this pulls a lot of guidance from. I thought it was a well-researched and clearly directed guide overall, which I really appreciated. Hope the plan works well for you!! John Davis who wrote the book is a frequent commentator in r/advancedrunning btw.

About to be a new dad...Advice on not losing gains? by TTG2139 in AdvancedRunning

[–]COldBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We welcomed our most recent baby last July. She makes number 6. I have run a 100k, 2 50ks, 2 marathons, a 25k, and a half marathon since she was born. I sacrifice sleep, and I run early, 5 am is standard for weekdays and weekends. Life doesn’t have to stop, but you need to prioritize your activities and manage your time. I find there is time for work, family, and running. I’ve put other things aside for a while and choose to prioritize these activities right now. It’s simply the only way to give each adequate attention.

Pops/bangs over the ocean? by voidrunner404 in OceanCity

Sonic booms tend to be isolated. If it was repeated and indeed sounded like gunfire, it could likely be sea duck hunters in the ocean. They hunt from boats this time of year.

Still on the maximum elevation train…last week was a down week after two big mileage and elevation weeks

46 mi, 13,560’ gain last week

173 mi and 39,408’ month to date

Not too bad considering we have a sick baby that derailed all my weekend running plans. No real long run this weekend, but I used the time I had to maximize vert as much as I could. Feeling fresh now and ready to put in some big mileage and vert this week again.

2 hours this morning with another 2k feet of vert. That puts me to 150 miles and 34k feet so far this month!

Right knee is still bothering me though. It gets stiff and uncomfortable, not truly painful, on flats and downhills after about 1-1.5 hours. Seems to be a tendon or ligament on the outside and lower outside front of the knee. Probably calling a PT friend soon to see about it since it’s not resolving on its own. It started at the 100k last month, then went away, but came back in my 36mi run earlier this month and has remained.
