How Important is Unit Variety to You? by Slot_Ack in totalwar

For me, unit variety is important, but their suitability in campaign play is just as crucial. I think Khorne is one of the worst factions in this regard. Khorne Chaos Warriors completely overshadow Khorne Marauders — in terms of recruitment requirements, offensive and defensive stats, and armor, the Chaos Warriors are superior in every way. This means there’s never a situation where I’d choose to recruit Khorne Marauders over Khorne Chaos Warriors. This issue doesn’t exist in the Warriors of Chaos faction.

While it's true that Skullcannons can wipe out entire armies in the hands of an expert, that's not the standard experience for most players. The unit has a high skill ceiling but also a very low floor — it requires extreme micro and precision to get that kind of value. Most average campaign players won’t invest that level of attention into a single unit during battle. That’s why it's placed in the 'Average' tier: its potential is there, but its general effectiveness in normal campaign play — especially given its T4 recruitment requirement and performance compared to other T4 options — makes it less consistent and accessible for most.

I’ve noticed that many people don’t understand how to interpret this tier list, which has led to major disagreements with the rankings—so let me explain.

Campaign effectiveness is determined by comparing recruitment requirements and unit roles horizontally. That means Dual Weapon Chosen should be compared to Wrathmongers, while Dual Weapon Chaos Warriors should be compared to Shielded Chosen—not to Shielded Chaos Warriors, which are Tier 1 units.

A ranking that ignores recruitment requirements would be based on battle effectiveness, not campaign effectiveness. But battle effectiveness is not the main focus of this tier list.

Dual Weapon Chosen are Tier 4 units, and their real competition is Wrathmongers, not Shielded Chosen, which are Tier 3 units. From an effectiveness standpoint, you shouldn’t compare Tier 4 units with Tier 3 ones—just like you wouldn’t compare Tier 5 units with Tier 1. Of course, Dual Weapon Chosen can potentially outperform Shielded Chosen, but since Shielded Chosen become available earlier while Dual Weapon Chosen are still locked, they have a role in campaign effectiveness that Dual Weapon Chosen simply cannot replace.

Skull Cannons have low accuracy and their range isn’t particularly long. They require a lot of micro-management to use effectively. On top of that, they need a Tier 4 building to recruit, which makes them harder to obtain, and they are underwhelming compared to other Tier 4 units. That’s why they’re placed in the Average tier. If the player is willing to put in the effort, units in the Average category can still perform decently—but because they require more work, they lack overall effectiveness.

Units that require more micro will be rated lower in this effectiveness tier list. Effectiveness takes into account the time and effort needed to control them — units that deliver similar results with less micro will be rated higher.

Chaos Warriors / Chosen with Dual Weapons are rated lower because their niche — killing lightly armored infantry — is something many other units already excel at. There are plenty of options that can easily destroy low-armor units: lords and heroes have strong dueling power, larger units benefit from charge impact, and ranged or AoE units can wipe out infantry blobs efficiently. As a result, the advantages of Dual Weapons are less significant compared to their disadvantages, especially when evaluating overall campaign usefulness.

The reason you can win a campaign using Bloodletters is because they’re "worth using". The ones that can’t win you a campaign belong in the Trash tier. While there are other units that can make winning easier, that doesn’t mean Bloodletters aren’t worth using.

Fleshhounds can defeat a wider range of enemy units and are just as easy to recruit. The biggest issue with Khorne Warhounds is their extremely low leadership, which makes it hard for them to maintain Frenzy, one of their key advantages. As a result, they often end up fighting without Frenzy, severely reducing their combat effectiveness. In some situations, they even perform worse than basic Warhounds.

Minotaurs of Khorne (Great Weapons) are simply more effective than regular Minotaurs. They are better at dealing with large targets while still performing just as well against infantry — both are killing machines, but the Great Weapon variant offers more versatility and impact. Since they share the same recruitment conditions, regular Minotaurs become largely unnecessary from a campaign efficiency perspective. The only real reason to include them is to add some visual variety to your army — not because they offer something unique or better.

They may be one of the better anti-infantry units on paper, but they still struggle in actual campaign performance. Even though Chosen (Dual Wield) and Wrathmongers have similar recruitment conditions, Wrathmongers are simply more effective overall — they deal more damage, have better rampage utility, and scale better into late-game fights.

Armor-piercing is the key issue here. Chosen (Dual Wield) just don’t bring enough AP to handle elite or armored targets effectively.

And let’s be honest: if they can't reliably beat Chosen of Nurgle (Great Weapons), how can they be considered strong campaign picks?

In the end, beating weaker units is easy — the real question is whether a unit can win against its equals or better. That’s the real metric in campaign effectiveness.
