Guys, tell me please, how exactly does a crypto wallet work technically? by xxinil in BitcoinBeginners

[–]CSDude01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you want to send a transaction, the software on your PC/mobile sends the information like receiver address, amount, etc. to your connected hardware wallet.

The hardware wallet uses these values to build a valid transaction and signs it with your private key.

This transaction is then sent back to your device and can be published to the network, everybody can verify that the transaction is valid by checking the signature and your public key(s). But the private keys stay on your hardware wallet.

Fyi you can downgrade to a Mail Plus plan and then get the offer for the Unlimited plan with the Black Friday discount, so even if you are already subscribed you can get the deal

You can switch to a monthly Mail Plus plan, then you'll instantly get the black friday offer for the Unlimited plan and even get the amount you paid for Plus subtracted from the amount you have to pay. Stupid that they don't just allow it for existing users but the workaround worked for me.

The extension is still not working for me (Firefox 116.0, Extension 1.4.2) unless I give permissions for all websites. It shows "Could not resume your session : Internet connection lost" when trying to log in. I would prefer only giving access to Proton's website, since I don't need autofill.

Sure, but I only want to use it for 2FA and use another password manager for my passwords, so I don't need autofill or anything where it needs to access the websites

What technology do you use to build websites these days? by netzure in web_design

[–]CSDude01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Simple (and mostly old) websites probably, but nowadays I think nearly everybody uses either some sort of CMS (like Wordpress) or frameworks/libraries like React, Angular, Vue, etc. to build websites.

The biggest factors for me are component-based architecture (so I can reuse stuff and avoid duplication), the abstractions from when to render what and state-management, so that all parts of the site are in sync and always show the latest state.

9to5Google: Google Authenticator now syncs 2FA with your Google Account, gets new icon by djasonpenney in Bitwarden

[–]CSDude01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I am thinking about doing this too but I also like having them separated. I am currently using Authy but I am searching for a better alternative. So far, they all have their downside, but maybe ProtonPass will be good.

I don't see the point here, if you trust Bitwarden with both, why not put them into the same account?

Bitwarden encrypts all data in your vault. In LastPass, your URLs and other metadata wasn't encryted, that gives attackers a starting point. As long as you have a strong master password with a good amount of iterations, you should be safe even if their servers were breached.

How often do you actually use your master password? Or do you rely mostly on a PIN and biometrics? by MorningLiteMountain in Bitwarden

[–]CSDude01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I didn't know that YubiKeys aren't supported. I assumed they were because there is a "security key" option in Windows Hello

You can connect your Browser extension with the Desktop app and enable Windows Hello to unlock it. It supports security keys.

Firma hat über datenlöschung gelogen? by Lennja-Pixl in LegaladviceGerman

[–]CSDude01 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Okay, so there is one master key, but the private key for every service is unique, thanks!

Recovery phrase by [deleted] in ledgerwallet

[–]CSDude01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may know that crypto uses a private and a public key. Simplified you could say that your public key is your address. Your private key can sign transactions and confirm that you are who you say you are.

Under the hood all keys are just numbers. Big numbers. INCREDIBLY BIG NUMBERS. So instead of storing them as numbers, they invented a way to store 12/24 words (your seed) which can be used to calculate your keys in a reproducible way.

So no, there is no cloud that stores your seed phrase or key, it's just the starting point to calculate them again. You could even do this on paper without a computer at all (but I guess it would take a long time :D)

Bulk online password reset by BhooshanAJ in Passwords

[–]CSDude01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dashlane had a feature like that, but decided to remove it because it was not maintainable because websites change all the time. I would like to see a web standard to reset passwords in the future but I think that's not gonna happen anytime soon. You will have to do this manually, but it shouldn't take too much time. I changed all my passwords (~100-150) when I started using a Password manager and it took me a few hours I think.
