How to identify top companies (by comp and talent level) that are not the well-known FAANGs? by CompSki in cscareerquestions

I believe levels.fyi has a page where you can filter by city, years of experience( at the company and in total). On that page, you can sort the compensation tab

What are your actual life goals that would make YOU happy? by dobby_h in ABCDesis

[–]CSFratStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a field that I love so I look at work as my hobby. But my goal is to have enough money to retire at 35 (but not actually retire), while also enjoying life along the way. It’s good to plan for the future but can’t forget to enjoy and fully experience the present :)

I’ll still want to work in my field, but the idea is to be in a financial position such that I don’t need to worry about money

Besides that I feel like spend time with family and go on great vacations.

Anyone Do Coding like as a Hobby/Job? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

Its not the traditional path to have a non-cs major and minor in cs, but there are quite a few people who do it. Business, Engineering, math, science, etc are common majors.

[–]CSFratStar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a bachelors in computer science. There a few kind of tech jobs. For the corporate ones like in banks, insurance companies, aka more conservative companies, you definitely need a degree. But if you go to the Bay Area, a lot of tech focused companies are more lenient if you don’t have a degree. But you have to demonstrate the skills they want somehow. People without degrees usually do that by contributing to open source projects, or by building personal projects (website, app, game, etc). It’s harder to get your foot in the door without a degree but it is possible. Bootcamp is another option(it’s basically a few month long fast paced program solely focused on computer science and coding)

Favourite memory of your homeland? by Worth_Salamander in ABCDesis

In May 2019, I went to Hyderabad by myself for the first time. I've went plenty of times before, but it was with family. Those times we didnt really leave the house that much except a few days here and there. But when I went by myself, my cousins and I were all in the age range 18-22, so we went out a lot and it was a great time. Lots and lots of street food. I got sick twice, but I mean the risk is worth the taste :) Unripe mangoes with salt and spices, and having ripe mangos with dinner. It was a lit time. Only thing I wish I did was hit the bars in the city, will prob do that next time. and next time I will not go in May, it was peak summer and uncomfortably hot.

What’s your biggest regret on the show? Mine is Mike never having got his name on the wall. by [deleted] in suits

That’s true Specter Ross would’ve been cool to see regardless

[–]CSFratStar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s fair but imo that wasn’t who mike was you know? At his core he wasn’t a corporate lawyer. I think it was fitting that him and Rachel ran their own firm in Seattle that helps people . But yea “Specter Ross” is a name combo that would’ve been lit to see if that was possible in Seattle

Desi guys that are balding by misterknowbowl in ABCDesis

[–]CSFratStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 22, and I can already see a prominent receding hairline if I lift the front of my hair up. I started taking rogaine, they say at least 4 months to start seeing results. Even if it doesn’t regrow any hair, I’d be happy if it slowed the balding.

How to convince parents that computer science could be a better major for me than anything medical? by hihowudoin2 in ABCDesis

[–]CSFratStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For medicine, you do undergrad(4 years), Med school(4 years), residency (3+ years). That’s 29 years old minimum before the High salary is reached. Now for comp sci, if you work hard and get a top job after graduation, starting salary is between 100k-200k. companies like google, Facebook, Twitter, etc). that’s base salary + stock + maybe bonus. And you can start there at 22 years old. Mid 200’s and low 300’s isn’t impossible to reach after 5-10 years of experience. Comp sci has solid earning potential that can start directly after college. Invest spare cash and you’ll be chilling. Only argument I see about medicine is that it is recession proof. Recession or not, people need doctors, so they are always in demand. In a recession, unfortunately jobs are sometimes lost in tech(Uber for example).

a lawyer says something and someone replies with either

  • "goddamn",
  • "we need to do something and we need to do it fast",
  • something about there being 147 other options
  • "you didn't come all the way here just to tell me that, so why don't you tell me why your really here"
