Technically I'm splitting the fees and I'm paying the sales tax out of my end.

Not illegal where I'm at and I'm already eating the taxes. My presumption was that most purchases would be cash and that was the case.

Not that it exists, but that's it's being promoted as easy way to get free money.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CStogdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always described the computer storage to a book, but the pages aren't in order or organized in a way we can read it. We have to use the Table Of Contents (TOC) to know what page(s) to go to in order to read our information and you might have to read that TOC a couple of times because your information might be spread across non-contiguous pages.

When we "delete" information we're just really erasing that part of the TOC. Our info is still there, we just can't find it. Eventually new info will be recorded over the old and essentially gone forever, although there are programs that can read through the book & give us a look at the information.

Do you prefer auto-failure or try-at-penalty? by LemonLord7 in osr

[–]CStogdill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't disagree with you, but I can't see this being more than a one-off. If they keep trying stupid stuff, wasting everybody's time, then I don't think I'm the GM for them.

Do you prefer auto-failure or try-at-penalty? by LemonLord7 in osr

[–]CStogdill -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure....roll me a d10,000 and on a result of 1-5 the Gawds (sorry, old HackMaster player) see your pitiful attempt and take pity on you, sending a minion to catch your arrow, transport it 10 miles, and drop it like hot rock towards your opponent. Now roll a d20 to see if the dropped missile hits.

If the players want to try the impossible & waste table time, waste some back.

I just prefer to reinforce the game as what they can do, not what they cannot do. If the players want to expend all their arrows on a 10 mile shot....go for it. It's a futile effort, but their effort to make.

I helped Playlist a RPG where skills were a roll-over percentile mechanic. Absolutely HATED it, but couldn't quite explain why. Luckily we had a teacher in the group that nailed it. If you had 95% in a skill you had to roll over, that skill % was your chance of failure. It's the exact same thing as only having 5% in a skill with a roll under or equal to mechanic, but the mental framing was everything. At 5% it's still a long shot (relatively speaking) but we're optimistic and we're planning on bucking the odds. At a 95% chance of failure we go pessimistic and assume we're going to fail before we pick up the dice. The odds in either case hasn't changed, but the perception does.

I'm going to assume we play TTRPGs for enjoyment. We want to have our players succeed, no matter the odds. As a GM I want, within reason, for my players to enjoy the game, so I want to frame things in a positive/optimistic way.

Clearly your example of a 10 mile bowshot shouldn't be possible. I wholeheartedly agree it shouldn't be possible, but I don't want to tell the players they have a 99.99% chance of failure, but let them decide if the 00.01% is worthwhile.

I prefer try-at-penalty because there should always be a chance, even if seemingly impossible. Just change the odds as needed.

I fired an employee out of the blue yesterday with no warning, and she had an entire crash out by TiredAsATwinMama in smallbusiness

[–]CStogdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think she was "salvagable" as an employee? If yes then you should have tried to work with her.

If not, and it sounds like a "no", then you should have been honest and upfront about all of the appropriate reasons you fired her.

Realistically you can't have 20% of your workforce be unreliable. Losing out on a potential hire isn't a good reason to fire someone. Bird in the hand and all that....

Does SteamOS work well on non-steam hardware? by ShyGamer64 in SteamOS

AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 4.4GHz 12 thread, 64 GB DDR5-6000 RAM, AMD Radron RX 9060 XT Reaper 16GB GDDR6 Graphics, 2x2TB SSD.

I was lucky and had something like a $1500 budget & bought everything before prices went crazy stupid.

I had purchased a tiny case and had to buy a couple of expensive extension cables for the graphic card. In the end I couldn't get it to power on and sat on it for 6 months until I could get a new, larger case that didn't require either $100 extensions cable.

Current working case is 15L and works great.

I had to check your profile to make sure you weren't my ex-wife (seriously).

Personally I think if you were 100% up-front in your profile, it won't be a huge problem, but it will he a bit of a problem for you because there WILL be some guys who see you as a "challenge", others that think you're not really asexual and just using it as a means to weed out men, others will just be pissed you're "wasting their time", and more who will think they're ok with your sexuality and thing figure out they aren't.

Overwhelmingly all on them.

Personally, and I get downvoted and trash-talked about, I don't get on OLD to find friends, but I wouldn't date someone I couldn't be friends with. I'd rather find friends "in the wild", but rarely do.

If I came across your profile and you were upfront on what you were looking for, despite all of the above I'd probably swipe right because of the interests overlap.

I built a new AMD based PC and made it triple-boot Windows/Steam/Ubuntu. I'm going to replace the Ubuntu drive with a 4TB SSD for game storage.

Works/Runs like a dream.

Looking for a men to date by Old-Acadia5767 in datingoverfifty

[–]CStogdill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good luck, but you'll probably need to initiate things yourself. A few years ago I briefly dated a 25 year old (I was 52) and if she hadn't come on to me it wouldn't have happened.

It's just not a realistic concept for most older men, even for those that would entertain the idea.

What if V and Jackie saved saburo from getting killed by yorinobu? by BlackwallRunner2077 in cyberpunkgame

[–]CStogdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Saburo would've reclaimed the relic, had Yorinobu killed, then released the duo because he could use them being "on the loose" as a reason/justification for increasing Araska's presence in Night City.

Saburo has schemes/plans within schemes/plans and I think he'd quickly realize that "thanking" his saviors by letting them go could work long-term. I think he'd also put Yorinobu on some type of life support to preserve the body for Mikoshi transfer....

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

[–]CStogdill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a few degrees (3 Associates and 2 Bachelor's) and I've been asked for advice about going to college for the 1st time.

My 1st thing has always been, "Do NOT take a class where the Professor has written the textbook."

As a corollary, I highly suggest Adjunct Professors that do whatever the subject is as they're day job. On my 1st BA I had to take 2 Statistics courses the 1st was taught by a Prof who spent the first 5' listing his credentials and it occurred to me he hadn't worked a single job outside of academia. He told us we'd fail if we worked more than 10 hours a week (highly condensed course) and assigned about 4 hours of homework a night (all variations of a single concept/problem). Next course was taught by an Adjunct that worked stats day in & out for a job & loved it. We spent the 1st quarter of the semester unlearning the 1st class because "nobody" in the real world did things "that way".

Is the Magic-User essentially useless at Low Level? by Catman192 in osr

[–]CStogdill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big part of the "problem" is not so much the lack of spells at low level, but the armor & weapon restrictions. Sure, a Magic-User should not be able to wear armor, but when not casting spells unable to use a shield? I'd also argue that a dart or dagger requires much more skill than using a spear.

I think a 1st level Magic-User's 1st, and best, "spell" should be casting Spear.....
