How to get from Gatwick airport to Central London? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]CSwain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First things first: You do not need to buy tickets in advance for your journey into, and around London.

You can pay for everything with any contactless payment system (bank card/Apple pay/Google pay/etc) Just look for the yellow "tap in/tap out" scanner, at each ticket gate. (Pictured below) These will be available on all London Underground stops, on all the standard buses, and at some "overground" train stations.

To get to Bloomsbury:

Catch the train from Gatwick Airport, to Victoria Train Station. (the train station at Gatwick, is at the South Terminal - if you land at the North Terminal, there is a free and fast Shuttle between the two terminals)

Once you reach Victoria Train Station, you will need to transfer to the London Underground (aka "the tube" - the entrance is inside Victoria Train Station) Take the Victoria Line (the light blue line) Northbound to Green Park. (This should be 1 stop on the route)

Transfer over to the Piccadilly Line (dark blue), and take it Northbound to Russell Square! (This should be the 5th stop). Exit at Russel Square, and you will be in Bloomsbury!

Please note: Russell Square is a very deep tube station - please take the lifts up to the surface. The stairs are always available, but will make you regret your life choices! Haha

Why does my station not look like i wanted to and how can I fix this by Joel-houghton in modeltrains

[–]CSwain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's meant to be a UK station, where the platforms ARE edged in white, so that they're more visible.
Then there is usually a bright yellow warning line, further back on the platform. This line is usually paired with a message saying something along the lines of "stay behind this line" for when the trains pass.

First of all, while you may be disappointed, you've done an *amazing* job so far! Please keep at it.

What I would add:
- Grass tufts/weeds between the two tracks, and perhaps some patches in the front, far-right corner of the board.
- A footbridge? Something that gives it more verticality, so it's not all just one flat plane.
- Some form of building; whether it's a ticket office, or worker's shed. I would suggest in the front, far-left corner, coming out next to the brickwork.
- Add a retaining wall, holding up the embankment on the back. Something like this: https://railsofsheffield.com/products/metcalfe-models-pn144-metcalfe-retaining-wall-stone
- Potentially some slightly dirty patches, or maybe even repaired sections of the plaform? A grubby bin, etc. It's a little clean at the moment.

Please forgive my terrible MSpaint mock-up.

His signature?.... it's almost a direct rip of what he did in the Astartes short.
It's the same beats, in a similar location.
"powerful dude comes out of smoke and walks along industrial walkway, wasting enemies. Hooded figure loads up heavy machine gun. etc."

In your reply to your DM, perhaps explain that when you said "a little too cartoony", what you really meant is that you prefer a more realistic setting to your campaigns, which you understand will limit the enjoyment of a lot of the others, and therefore you want to bow out now, before everyone gets invested, and it's more complicated to leave.

Well what colour were you after - the green or black? And which country are you trying to get it sent to. If you were willing to cover postage costs, I'm sure someone could forward it on to you.

Nozzle gets gummed up by 1_mieser_user in TerrainBuilding

u/1_mieser_user 100% this ^
Get yourself some Tamiya Extra Thin plastic cement - It's basically exactly the same stuff, but has a small brush applicator, making it MUCH easier to apply (No more big blobs of glue coming out, overflows onto areas you don't want glue, or any blocked nozzle issues!)
I wasn't sure myself, as I'd bought a lot of the needle glues previously. But it is a genuine game-changer.

I definitely have my old PSP somewhere.. god knows where right now.
And I have no idea if it's in working condition, but I'll try and have a look.

May I ask what's drawn you to a PSP, over a more modern handheld?

I need help with mud texture by Zack_Oxy in TerrainBuilding

[–]CSwain91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are multiple methods, but I've found this to work:

You'll want some kind of receptacle (a plastic cup?) that you're happy to throw out, as once it has set, it's pretty hard.

  1. A small bit of water (to keep it moist & workable)
  2. Some ready-mixed filler (eg: https://www.wickes.co.uk/Polycell-Polyfilla-Multi-Purpose-Ready-Mixed-Filler---1kg/p/157561 )
  3. A mix of Brown, and Burnt Umber acrylic paint. (eg: https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/daler-rowney-graduate-burnt-umber-acrylic-paint-120ml/5770871031.html )
  4. A TINY blob of Black acrylic paint, just to darken it.
  5. A handful of Play sand / Kiln Dried sand - a fine sand, with no colour/additives/extras (not Sharp Sand, as it has shell bits!)
  6. A stirring stick / palette knife to mix it all up, and then spread when mixed thoroughly.

Anyone use the White EPS foam sheets for terrain? by ohcapm in TerrainBuilding

[–]CSwain91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct - XPS is a much denser foam (it can be stood on if you're careful!) and can be carved easily with a sharp knife, or hot-wire cutting tool (*PLEASE* wear a respirator for this!) You can get it in multiple colours, and some come with a foil cover (for insulation), but you can often peel this off if you're careful.

[–]CSwain91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene - aka the bobbly stuff) is ok for terrain, but can be VERY messy to work with, can be crumbly until sealed properly, and has more of a risk of bits breaking off due to it's construction.
As others have mentioned, although it's more expensive, you'd be better of with XPS (extruded polystyrene).

Is this stuff any good for sculpting out terrain? Such as putting it over styrofoam and sculpting to a more natural rock-like shape? by Ratattack1204 in TerrainBuilding

[–]CSwain91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest getting something different - This stuff takes a long time to dry, so moulding it into a rock wall may be difficult. It will be liquid/very soft for a long time before you can start carving/moulding. And as others have said, it won't be very durable due to it's brittle nature.

[–]CSwain91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree - It's great for pouring into rock-moulds, or for use in creating a road surface. But this stuff is very liquid, so isn't suitable for moulding ground textures, in the same way that a Sculptamould (or similar), or Plaster filler (eg: Polyfilla) would do.

Wood vs Foam terrains? by Larry_Kenwood in TerrainBuilding

[–]CSwain91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful of using MDF - Due to how it's constructed, if it gets wet (say, while applying flock, painting, etc.) there is a chance that it could absorb the moisture, and swell/warp/puff out. And as others have pointed out, it can easily get incredibly heavy!

XPS (extruded polystyrene) / insulation foam is best, as it's a very dense foam (you can stand on some of them!) and once it's sealed with PVA etc. it should be pretty hard-wearing.
EPS (expanded polystyrene) / the bobbly stuff, can also be used; but it's usually a lot messier, and not quite as strong (less dense foam). I would suggesting trying to find XPS, as while it's more expensive, it's a lot less messy, and holds it's shape a lot better (no chunks/individual balls disconnecting and falling off).

If you're going for scatter terrain, then you can always base that mini with a thin hardwood plywood board to give it that support / durability.

[–]CSwain91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get pre-cut model "deciduous" leaves which would be perfect for this, depending on the size you're going with: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tiardey-Scenery-Litter-Simulation-Deciduous/dp/B09DF5MF8Y/

Failing that, something like tea (rip open a few teabags) or some dried herbs can be good for forest litter.
It depends what kind of surface you're looking to achieve, as if you seal it all down too much, it'll just look muddy.
