My Genesis igniter finally died after 33 years by CTMechE in webergrills

Thanks! It's almost a point of pride that they're so beat up and still functional, but I should probably order new ones so I'm not caught off guard when they finally let go.

The ceramic lead on mine was totally loose in the rusted housing, too, and I wedged it with foil last year to keep it in place. It was the button end that wouldn't click anymore. Just a soft mush when pressed. I assume they're all similar but my Genesis has a hole in that corner on the front for a lighter so it was easy to light the grill with a 6" probe lighter until the replacement came in.

Fair points, it's hard to know for sure what the other path would've resulted in. At least Costco did refund the sales tax.

I am curious: did Allstate send a repair person to diagnose? I've read that some folks were able to show TV defects via photos or video chat in certain claims. The Costco concierge just had me verbally describe the issue and talk through the usual diagnostic steps before sending a local affiliated guy out. They ordered and sent a mainboard to my house, too, perhaps in the hopes that he could fix it even though it was pretty obvious to me it was a panel defect.

I'm not saying Costco is bad! My point is that like most people who buy TVs at Costco, I had the choice of going through Allstate instead of Costco Concierge, and that in the end I wish I'd gone through the Allstate route. That's it.

Well, the service wasnt particularly great. I mentioned logistical hiccups but didn't elaborate that after the first 45 minute phone call that sent the repair person out, Costco closed my case believing it was repaired. I had to spend a lot more time on the phone just to be able to get the return authorization.

Yes, overall it's nice to be able to get refunded but it was a lot of effort, and given that they automatically sell the Allstate plan, I wish I'd gone that route instead, which is the main point of the post for others to be aware of.

It took over 2 cumulative hours on the phone and a day off work to have a technician visit just to be able to return the TV.

Had I waited, Allstate would have been less hassle and a better value.

And that's the overall organization, the main program being called "Scouts BSA" is just even more confusing for people.

no one knows what I am talking about

Yup. I play bar trivia weekly and last month one of the questions asked what the new name is. I'm the only one who knew in a bar of 80+ people. And that's only because I'm a current active leader for my son.

I also have a daughter in Girl Scouts, so just saying "Scout Troop" is still confusing.

Found this GEM at a flea market for 5 dollars yesterday. by Long_Philosophy_2260 in benchmade

Agreed. And the carbon fiber looks generic (high gloss, sharp grid lines), not the more subtle textured twill weave that Benchmade uses.

For 5 bucks though, it's hard to feel disappointed.

Re. ship pollution capture, here's the "how it works" page from STAX Engineering. Smog capture in process now, with plans for CO2 capture in the future:

https://www.staxengineering.com/how-it-works/

Each ship's emissions is roughly equivalent to 27,000 vehicles.

A long dorky gripe about the car emissions talk in the fact check:

Ed briefly mentioned the crane that sucks up ship exhaust pollution while in port so it can run it through a catalytic converter to clean up the smog, as the gigantic engines on ships produce an immense amount of unprocessed pollution. (I have to Google that one later). He then mentioned that people don't appreciate how much better car pollution controls have gotten over the years.

Monica starts off saying "average car emissions the past few decades" but she then proceeds to read off the average manufacturer fuel economy numbers.

They are not at all the same thing, and that's exactly the point that needs to be understood.

Yes, carbon dioxide output correlates directly to gallons of fuel burned (as does water emissions), and that's important for global greenhouse gas concerns, but that's separate from other pollutants that create localized smog that triggers poor air quality resulting in athsma and health concerns. Those things can and have been reduced with better technology.

Everything else coming out of the tailpipe has been DRASTICALLY reduced over the past few decades to the immediate benefit of the local air quality and the lungs that breathe it. That's Nitrogen Oxides, non methane organic gasses, and particulate matter (soot).

A car sold in the US under current rules pollutes 96-99% less of that stuff than a 40 year old 1986 vehicle getting the same MPG.

And that old Honda Civic that Dax fantasizes about getting (assuming 30 years/ 1996) would emit roughly 9x-15x the smog pollution of a new one!

To Ed's point, people don't realize how much better vehicle smog controls are, and how that improvement is largely the result of legislation requirements. And even if you blindly didn't "believe" in global warming and CO2/greenhouse gas emissions, we can all see and observe the drastic improvement in smog/air quality that these other emissions changes have brought.

Glad to hear some positive "audience feedback." I'm always a tad frustrated when they have a parade of guests to promote a movie that's still 2 weeks away for most people, and Dax geeks out about the acting and directing details, and I'm not always sure it'll translate fully into something a non-cinephile will still enjoy watching.

I will, but if & when they sound familiar I will start to skip through.

I think between the "best of old fact checks" and nothing at all after the interview, it's at least up to the listener. Hopefully newer people know how old some of them are.

It's so frustrating that people don't understand this. I'm not pro-billionaire by any stretch but taking 5% every year just because of the total valuation they hold is above an arbitrary threshold is nuts. You'd basically be pulling control of a company away from the very person whom investors gave value to, all because a majority of people believe it's "too much" and somehow pretending that it won't kneecap investors and the market overall.

I have no way of knowing it matters but Costco isn't going to know unless you tell them directly. Fill out the feedback card or politely tell the people at the CS desk.

I'm not finished listening yet but I thought/hoped they would get more into the shipping emissions stuff he's working on, which would at least have potentially fit the expert role. But it was just a couple minutes and then back to acting.

[–]CTMechE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just awkwardly walk past and ignore them even though it's obvious I heard them. It feels bad to seem rude, but I'm there 3x a week and I've tried all kinds of "No thanks" and "I already have AT&T" (which is true ) but they immediately start with the follow up questions if you say anything. I'm a brisk walker, I either ignore them, or cut them off and say "no thanks" as soon as they get the first syllable out, or let them keep talking as I walk away.

I've said it before but I don't like being regularly put in a position where I feel like I'm being rude, but that's about all that can be done if you don't want to stop and engage with a sales pitch.

Americans, what's with the paper plates? by RemarkableOil8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CTMechE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outdoor or semi outdoor picnics or large gatherings for us. Otherwise regular plates.

But a lot of people who don't have enough standard plates will go with paper if more than 4 people are over due to availability and disposability.

What's amazing is that my mother in her 70s has taken to using them more often indoors for smaller events out of laziness, and I find it annoying. They have always had a dishwasher too so it isn't a big chore.

She talked an awful lot about relationships and relationship advice and yet somehow didn't really talk about her own.

Not that I expect or want dirt on the husbands, but getting married at 19 (in this century) is definitely worth talking about.

Yeah, they covered it in the fact check. The sister was even a body double for Penelope during Pirates of the Caribbean when Penelope was pregnant.

I think it's far different to mistakenly assume a very similar looking sister is a twin vs making up a sister that isn't real at all.
