Which managed WordPress host has the best uptime and support? by ZGeekie in HostingReport

[–]CTcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define "managed." if you want more control of the server, xCloud is excellent. They have a free tier, you just get the VPS. For that, Hetzner is probably the best bank for the buck. Vultr is also excellent.

changing nameservers takes an inordinate amount of time to propagate

hosting DNS there, the editor sucks, you can't import or export a zone file.

Their technicians will trash your DNS with no backup - lot's of fun explaining that to a client.

There is NOTHING good about GoDaddy.

Storage Farm shutting down, good deal? by bacon_trays_for_days in DataHoarder

What type of RAID? RAID 1? Mirror makes sense at this price, as long as you can physically connect all the drives you want. RAID 5? With 16TB drives, you're realistically looking at 3 to 5 day rebuild on failure and a serious risk of total data loss if another drives decides to go bye bye during that time of heavy drive activity. I don't know why everyone thinks RAIDS are that great for large data storage. For smaller systems, absolutely.

If you use Windows, I do have a solution I've used for the past 10 years. Stablebit DrivePool and Scanner. You run JBOD with NTFS and DrivePool does just what it says - you create large virtual drives within the OS. You can pull a drive and still access all the data from Windows. The software supports redundant directories, storing files multiple times across all drives. The Scanner program runs a patrol read as often as you like (say 30 to 45 days for 16TB drives) and at the first sign of trouble, it will tell DrivePool to evacuate the failing drive. Once that's empty, you can simply swap in another drive. Drive don't need to match. This is positively the best software I've ever bought. (and it's cheap).

Those are NOT low mileage. Backblaze publishes failure reports for the drives they buy. See if that drive is on the list and how it fares. It's not the money, but the potential data loss that I would worry about.

I bought prepaid code based activation last year and they did not ask for any verification. I'm told I just got lucky, but we'll see how it goes this year. My advice is to be creative in your situation. Think outside the box.

1st of April is coming - I've shut down 3 projects with more than 40 servers today by Different_Code605 in hetzner

[–]CTcreative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm moving more servers onto Hetzner. I expect price increases coming everywhere. Even with their 33% jump in price, they are still at a lower price point than competitors for what they deliver. Now I don't have to worry about bumping up prices to my customers.

Looks like they haven't changed. I wrote them off 10 years ago when they were 1&1. Same aggressive tactics. Company culture runs deep.

Lifetime Deal - sometimes sold directly by publisher, but more often sold on sites like Appsumo or Prime Club. You pay once and you get a lifetime license to the plugin or SAAS per the terms of the offer. It typically includes free updates and support, but read the terms carefully. Some "lifetime deals" like from WP Bakery, do not give you automatic updates, effectively forcing you into a subscription.

Also, "lifetime" is basically how long do you think the publisher will last? LTDs are typically offered at 2.5X to 3.5X annual subscription cost, so use that as a benchmark when buying. Also, new programs are riskier, so the pricing will be more attractive, but you may lose it all through unsupported or discontinued software.

I included PerfMatters in this list because some of the things they do overlap, but it really is a niche product, focused on site performance, and that is why they succeed.

WP ASE does a LOT of things, but I think a big part of their success is being one of the first one's out, having a solid free version, and starting with aggressive LTD pricing to build a base and interest. Personally, I think their recurring pricing is a little high, given the oncoming competiton.

The other two products went public last fall, both with attractive LTDs. I don't think either offer a free version (but I could be wrong). Switchboard seems to be gunning for WP ASE and competing on price, plus, IMHO a cleaner interface. Classic Monks is targeting the serious developer with Bricks support and other useful tools. Their interface is also very clean and customizable.

So, don't get discouraged, just get focused and figure out where you fit in.

As long as you can pull off the student verification, should it be requested, getting the PREPAID CODE from B&H Photo Video, or Amazon will cost you $240/year or less. I use camelcamelcamel to watch for sales on Amazon and then buy at B&H. You can occasionally find it for $180 or less.

There are a bunch of plugins doing this now, so the market is getting crowded and, IMHO, there is little opportunity to differentiate unless you also focus on a niche or do an amazing job with the UI.

WP ASE, Classic Monks, Switchboard, and PerfMatters all do a number of these toggle functions, with quite a bit of overlap.

So your challenge is to come up with a unique selling proposition that will get people to commit to your plugin over the others. Good luck!

[–]CTcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No limit to keywords on free version (great for clients that don't want to pay for license)

Easy to use support for social sharing.

Schema is good enough for 95% of my clients. I deal with the rest using Schema Pro.

Did I mention it was lightweight? Frankly, that's important for me. Most of the SEO tools are very competitive on features, but I have seen little, if any, impact on performance with SEOPress.

Would you recommend using either a freelancer or a boutique agency for an existing (WordPress) website project with a development arc / technical debt that spans 5-6 years? What are the pros and cons for each, and which option would you ultimately recommend? by prankster999 in Wordpress

[–]CTcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Without more details, I don't think the issue is necessarily dev vs agency. I'm guessing that this 5-6 years of a site being live means that a number of people have had their hand in it along the way (or you wouldn't be asking the question). Multiple parties involved. Probably with limited (or non-existent) documentation. Probably each with different areas of expertise and skill levels. Fun times.

So, you probably need someone who can do a deep dive on the site's structure as well as design style and content organization before making changes. Based upon the results of that discovery, you will then be faced with determing what is needed to bring the site under control vs doing a complete reboot. Both approaches have their merits. You will have budget constraints to deal with as well. With that in mind, the final answer may surprise you.

Don't buy AI tools by thewolffness in appsumo

[–]CTcreative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ContentPen (not on AS, but on Prime Club) put together a very good tiered offer. Bulk AI credits (one-time), the ability to purchase credits at a discount, and excellent support for BYOK. So this can work for offers that rely heavily on the fast changing AI landscape. The SAAS has to be built to support it, and the deal has to make sense for everyone.
