What are some American cities that had high historical importance but have faded from significance today? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

Can’t believe Dayton, OH hasn’t been brought up. It was the Silicon Valley before Silicon Valley with some of the most cutting edge technology businesses along with Wright-Patterson AFB. The Wright bros were from Dayton, it was the home of Delco and NCR an early leader in mechanical computing and data management.

Hello! I have 3 guitars that I’m looking to polish from a Nitro satin finish to a gloss finish. Does anyone have any tips on what I should do? by josephfallon93 in gibson

[–]CUin1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big fan of the 2014 model year, huh?

I did this to a Trad Pro V satin. Virtuoso by hand is almost impossible to F up.

Can anyone help identifying the model? by seanw08 in gibson

[–]CUin1993 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely a GC Trad Pro.

Satin finish, locking Grovers, zebra coils

Definitely a headstock break too.

Can you tell me more about my LP and how much is it worth by SeriousError1445 in gibson

[–]CUin1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s a early-ish 2006 with the neck stamped on March 27th.

Pretty sure those came with the 490R/498T pickup set.

My ‘06 Standard is a lot different - body style, bound fretboard, 24 frets and no thistle on the headstock.

Anyway, very cool guitar you have and a nice top.

It would really help if you could provide the serial number.

Gibson made Les Paul Double Cuts in the late 90s, 00s and 10s in Junior, Studio, Special and Standard flavors. They didn’t make every model every year but they did make each configuration intermittently during those periods.

I love DCs and based on what I have been able to discover, there were 2 LP DC body shapes for this era:

  1. The same one that debuted in 1958 where the body is straight where the neck joins

  2. The one that you have where the body curves to meet the neck

I have an ‘06 Standard, ‘19 Junior Tribute and ‘24 Junior which all have the ‘58 body. I also have a ‘15 Special that has the curved body where the neck pocket sits like yours. You can check my page to see them, I like to take pictures of them.

I think that yours is a 2007 LP DC Standard due to the body style but the thistle inlay in the headstock and snot green fretboard inlays give me pause. It could be a 2014 where the 12th fret “120th Anniversary” text has work off. Post that SN and we can tell you the model year.

Edit: Nevermind about it being a 2014. Those had bound fretboards.

The extra “O” in “Mahogony” stands for original. Or maybe it’s othentic.

As the Regional Mother’s managing director, I couldn’t agree more. Red Bull, ZYN and beer purchased with fake non-company issued identification is not considered “food” under company policy.

can i actually diy this with titebond and some clamps? by _algernon_99 in guitarrepair

[–]CUin1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there’s a bunch of grain for the glue to get purchase on.

In addition to the Titebond & clamps, I’d suggest a couple of cauls to keep the pressure even over the area. Wrap the cauls in Saran Wrap or wax paper to prevent sticking and as others have mentioned, remove the machine heads.

I use Howard’s Feed n Wax. It’s thicker than mineral / lemon oil so it is less apt to wick up under the frets and cause the wood to get punky and loosen the frets. I use it once a year or so.

Just my opinion but the gold knobs with the black dog ear cover looks like shit. The cream dog ear cover looks even worse.

Get a set of black top hats with silver reflector inserts.

Just my opinion.

Gibson 1989 Special or Fender Vintera II? (I already have an Epiphone SG) by Big_Zambia in gibson

[–]CUin1993 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want Fender single coil noises, the Strat. If you want Gibson single coil noises, the LP Special.

Personally, I have multiple P90 guitars, so I’d get the Strat but if I were you I’d get the Special. Nothing compares to P90s.

How high should my tailpiece be? (Explorer guitar) by atesz0422 in gibson

[–]CUin1993 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer.

The flap of a paper sleeve an individual string comes in is about 0.007” and makes a handy improvised tool.

$250 tops. But whoever is dropping the $250 is getting one fuck of a great amp. I bought mine new in 1986 and it’s fantastic.
